United States go perfect, Yua Emura catches fire for Japan on Day 4 of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023 - by Eurobasket News
United States (men) take care of business to go undefeated in pool play while Yua Emura (160-G-2002) makes history for Japan on Day 4 of the Vienna FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023 on June 2.

THE TEAMS
The United States men's team did not have it easy in their final two games of Group B, facing a physical Slovenia and hometown side Austria. It was all business for the Americans though as they showcased just how versatile they can be. With Slovenia's Jure Lien causing problems in the paint in the opener, they fought back with fire. Dylan Travis (190-G-1993, college: FSC) and Kareem Maddox (202-F/C-1989, college: Princeton) played through contact and got to the rack as well. Maddox finished the game at the free throw line, a stuffy 14 - 21 win. The American side wasn't done, shutting out the roaring Rathausplatz on the side of their home side Austria. Jimmer-Mania returned in style as his fiery shooting performance took him to 13 points in the game and a 16 - 21 victory for his side. The 4-0 display granted USA the top spot while Austria and Latvia took the play-in positions. In Group D on the men's side, Netherlands and Japan went perfect on the night in style, allowing the Dutch side to clinch the top spot while Japan went ballistic to rally back from a woeful Day 1 showing to clinch a play-in spot along with Switzerland.

On the women's side, it was Japan that won over fans, especially the 20-year-old Yua Emura who caught fire in game 1 to lead her side to a 21 - 11 win against Poland. Their last game was against a desperate and flashy Egypt side who needed the win to stay in the running. A much closer game this time round, Emura and Shizuka Takada (168-PG-1996) took on the offensive responsibility as they did just enough to pick up an impressive 18 - 21 victory. They will make their way to the play-in with Germany while the Australian side assumes the top spot. China (women) continued on their hot streak, seemingly unshakable since the start of the Women's Series. Wan JiYuan (185-C-2002) was rolling and taking over the paint in the first game against Romania, scoring 9 points in a dominant 21 - 7 win. It was the Lili Wang (170-SG-1992) show in their final group game. Taking on an on-fire Italy side, Wang was all over the court, scoring 10 points, grabbing 6 rebounds and dropping some dimes as they won 18 - 21 to seal the top spot while Israel and Italy made the play-ins.

THE PLAYERS
It was another Worthy night for Netherlands as Worthy de Jong (194-G-1988) ran the show in both their wins against Switzerland and Hungary, combining for a total of 20 points. It's not just about the number, it is arguably the most entertaining and smooth 20 points you'll ever see being scored. When Worthy takes to the court, keep your eyes glued. Japan clutched up big, needing to go perfect on the day to make it to the play-ins. When the moment called for it, Thomas Early Kennedy answered. Scoring a combined 21 points over both games against Hungary and Mongolia, his performance in the closer was scorching hot. Kennedy rattled off 5 twos, 4 of them to start the game off. You cannot leave the Japanese sensation open, not for a second. The player of the night however, is none other than Yua Emura. Her first game against Poland was historic, scoring an insane 18 points to lead her team to the win. When you look up automatic in the dictionary, you'll see Emura lighting it up in Vienna.

Defending champion Real Madrid (Liga Endesa) is close to add to their roster 32-year old Argentinian international point guard Facundo Campazzo (180cm-88kg-1991) for new 2023-24 season who plays currently at KK Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Beograd in Serbia. It is actually his comeback to Madrid as he has played here before. Campazzo managed to play in three leagues in two countries last year. In 19 ABA League games he recorded 13.2ppg, 3.0rpg, 6.3apg and 2.2spg. He also played 9 games in Euroleague where he averaged 15.0ppg, 2.8rpg, 5.9apg and 1.9spg. The other team he played that season for were the Mavericks in NBA. But in 8 games he had just 1.3ppg and 1.1apg. Campazzo also spent pre-season at the Nuggets in NBA.
He also represented Argentina at the Olympic Games in Tokyo (Japan) two years ago. His stats at that event were 4 games: 14.3ppg, 5.3rpg, 5.8apg, 1.8spg, FGP: 52.9%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 81.8%.
Campazzo has played previously professionally in Spain (Murcia) and Argentina (Penarol). He won Spanish Liga Endesa championship title in 2015, 2018 and 2019 and the cup in 2010 and 2014. Campazzo was voted to Argentinian LigaA All-Star Game back in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Manama and Muharraq clash in best-of-5 finals - by Eurobasket News
MANAMA will be eyeing the coveted league-and-cup double as they take on Muharraq tonight in the first game of the 2022-23 Zain Basketball League best-of-five final series at the Khalifa Sports City Arena. Having beaten arch-rivals Muharraq 75-72 in a thrilling 2022-23 Khalifa bin Salman Cup final last Monday at the same venue, Manama will want to grab an early advantage in the series by winning the first game. But Muharraq, who seemed to hold the edge in the Khalifa bin Salman Cup final until the last few minutes when Sir'Dominic Pointer (198-G/F-1992, college: St.John's) and Ali Hussain turned it around in stunning fashion for Manama, will be just as focused on seeking revenge on their traditional rivals and going 1-0 ahead tonight. American pros Dewayne Jackson (203-F-1990, college: Morgan St.) and DaJuan Summers (203-PF-1988, college: Georgetown, agency: Interperformances) will, doubtless, be expected to shoulder the burden of doing most of the scoring for Muharraq as they have all season. Even in the Cup final last Monday, Summers top-scored for his team with 27 points to go with seven rebounds and two assists, while Jackson had the next-best tally, with 25 points along with five rebounds and seven assists. But captain Bader Abdulla, who scored 11 points to go with two rebounds and an assist in that final, has been a solid back-up for his overseas pros throughout the season, along with the impressive Hussain Salman and the sturdy Ali Shukralla. Baqer Isa, Ali Jaffar, Mahmood Abbas Isa and the brothers Rabeea, Abdulla and Ali, have also chipped in with meaningful contributions throughout the year. Manama have also relied heavily on their American stars with Travin Thibodeaux (203-F-1996, college: New Orleans) and Pointer doing the bulk of their scoring across all games. Thibodeaux had a quiet game in the Cup final, scoring only eight points but he also had nine rebounds and six assists. Pointer was instrumental in Manama's come-from-behind victory with a total of 23 points to go with seven rebounds. And captain Hassan Nowrooz, who has led his side with panache apart from also making valuable contributions himself, will be hoping that not only are Thibodeaux and Pointer on song tonight but that his local players also perform as well as they did last week. Mohammed Ameer, who scored 18 points along with nine rebounds and two assists in the Cup final, has been consistent all season, as has Ahmed Salman. Namesake Ahmed Aldurazi has dazzled everyone with his lightning speed around the court while Ahmed Najaf and Mohammed Jassim have been very reliable. And brothers Mustafa and Ali Hussain have caused havoc amongst their opponents' ranks whenever they have stepped onto the court with their creative plays. A full house is expected again today for the game which will begin at 7pm. Last Monday, the Cup final began at the same time but the 3,600 seat arena was filled to the brim at 4pm, three hours before the scheduled start, with a few hundred people milling around the several gates, still trying desperately to somehow get in.

Justin Wright-Foreman claims CEBL weekly honour - by Eurobasket News
actionPhoto
CEBL

American Justin Wright-Foreman (183-PG-1997) put on an amazing game in the last round for Saskatchewan and that's him to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 2.
The 25-year old playmaker had the game-high 23 points adding four rebounds and eight assists for Saskatchewan in his team's victory, helping them to crush, the league's bottom-ranked team Vancouver (#7, 0-1) with 24-point margin 109-85. Thanks to this victory Saskatchewan moved-up to the 6th position in CEBL. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Saskatchewan won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. Wright-Foreman just recently signed at Saskatchewan and it was his first game, where he immediately became new team's leader.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young American forward Nick Ward (203-F-1997) of Vancouver. Ward impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Bad luck as Vancouver lost that game 85-109 to Saskatchewan (0-0). The season is still at the very beginning and this lost game may not be such crucial, of course if they start win the games. Let's wait for the next round. Ward is one of the most experienced players at Vancouver and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 20.5ppg (#5). He also registered 11.5 boards per game.

The third best performed player last round was American Anthony Barber (188-PG-1994) of Scarborough (#5). Barber got into 30-points club by scoring exactly 30 points in the last round. He went also for five assists. Despite Barber's great performance Scarborough lost 82-93 to Ottawa (#3, 2-1). But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Scarborough needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 1 victory and 1 lost game. Barber has a great season in CEBL. After only 2 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 26.5ppg (best scorer) and assists with 5.5apg (3rd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Blake Francis (183-PG-1998) of Montreal - 24 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assists
5. Nathan Cayo (201-F-1997) of Montreal - 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists
6. Kadre Gray (186-G-1997) of Ottawa - 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists
7. Sean Miller-Moore (193-G-1998) of Calgary - 23 points and 5 rebounds
8. Simi Shittu (208-F/C-1999) of Calgary - 17 points and 12 rebounds
9. Lloyd Pandi (193-F-1999) of Niagara - 19 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Aher Uguak (201-SF-1998) of Edmonton - 22 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists

The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

The Player of the Week awards are presented by Hoops Agents. Hoops Agents is the most complete website about the agencies and players they represent. Mike Poole claims Colombian Liga WPlay Hoops Agents weekly honour - by Eurobasket News

Experienced American Mike Poole (196-F-1992) had an amazing evening in the last round for Cimarrones and that's him to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 11.
The 30-year old forward had the game-high 41 points adding six rebounds for Cimarrones in his team's victory, helping them to crush Sabios (#5, 1-9) with 17-point margin 106-89. Cimarrones maintains the 3rd position in their group in Colombian Liga WPlay. Cimarrones is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 6-7 record. In the team's last game Poole had a remarkable 66.7% from 2-point range and got eight three-pointers out of 14 attempts. He just recently signed at Cimarrones, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Mike Poole averages this season 19.8ppg.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young Argentinian forward Augusto Bruera (196-F-1998, agency: BIG) of Sabios. Bruera impressed basketball fans with 41 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Of course Sabios cruised to a 91-83 relatively comfortable win over slightly higher-ranked Cimarrones (#3, 6-7). Sabios' 5th position in Group B has not changed. 9 lost games are too many comparing to just one victory Sabios managed to get this year. Bruera is one of the most experienced players at Sabios and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

The third best performed player last round was international forward Soren De Luque (196-PF-1998) of second-ranked Titanes. De Luque showcased his all-around game by recording 24 points, twelve rebounds (!!!) and four assists in the last round. He was a key player of Titanes, leading his team to a 83-74 win against #4 ranked Motilones in a game of the week. Titanes needs these victories very badly if they think about taking over top position in Group A. Their record at this point is 9 victories and 3 lost games. De Luque has a great season in Colombia. After 14 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 7.6rpg (6th best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Franco Morales (179-G-1992) of Team Cali - 28 points, 7 rebounds and 13 assists
5. Bruce Massey (190-G-1990) of Cimarrones - 19 points, 9 rebounds and 11 assists
6. Mitchell Kirsch (193-G-1998) of Sabios - 26 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists
7. Yildon Mendoza (206-F-1996) of Team Cali - 15 points and 12 rebounds
8. Gianfranco Espinosa) of Cimarrones - 30 points and 8 rebounds
9. Panagiotis Filippakos (202-F/C-1994) of Team Cali - 27 points and 10 rebounds
10. Josimar Ayarza (205-PF-1987) of Titanes - 21 points and 11 rebounds

Malta narrowly lose to Luxembourg - by Eurobasket News
In the men's game, Josh Tomasi (208-F-2000, college: St.Cloud St.) led the Malta scoring just like the night before, this time putting up 19 points and four rebounds. Nelson Kahler (206-C/F-1994, college: CSU-Pueblo) added 14 together with eight rebounds and two assists, as Kurt Cassar (208-C-1999) rounded the double-digit scoring with 11, four rebounds and two assists. After a memorable victory against Montenegro on Wednesday, things looked heading in the same direction when just five seconds into the game, Tevin Falzon (203-SF-1992, college: Sacred Heart) hit a corner three with Tomasi dunking, and Kahler adding another bucket before the first minute was even over. Malta's players looked like they were finally enjoying themselves out on the court together, no longer seeming a disjointed set of gifted players but a team. A close first quarter came to an end with Malta up by six at the end as Aaron Falzon (203-F-1996, college: Quinnipiac), who finished with five points before fouling out, netted a corner three at the buzzer. Second chance points were Luxembourg's modus operandi in the second quarter and this seemed to work in their favour as they levelled proceedings at 33-33. They took the lead with a three-ball and proceeded to open a six-point lead. But with two minutes to go a three-ball from Tevin Falzon, a free throw from Kahler, and a midrange jumper from Eric Washington (183-PG-1993, college: Miami, OH) brought things level yet again. Luxembourg pushed forward again with Washington hitting late to bring the game to within three at the halftime break. In the third quarter, Malta kept up their momentum and the lead changed for the third time of the game. It was then neck and neck in the fourth quarter as Malta lead with close margins. However, Luxembourg levelled with 1.20 to go and they kept a two-point lead until the end. Ivan Delgado (193-PG-1998) finished with 20 points for the winners.

Malta in GSSE gold medal game after Montenegro win - by Eurobasket News
Joshua Tomasi got Malta going with the first bucket of the game. Tevin Falzon (203-SF-1992, college: Sacred Heart) hit a three-pointer and got second-chance points to put Malta in the lead after a quick run by Montenegro saw them go up to six points. The rest of the first quarter was tit for tat as Falzon was the focal point of Malta's offence with an astounding opening-quarter 19 points and a solid presence under the hoop to grab the boards. Montenegro brought the game to parity with a three-ball immediately as the second quarter opened but Tomasi regained Malta's league with a pair of freethrows. Montenegro grew in stature as they took the lead again. Coach Alan Walls brought on Samuel Deguara (230-C-1991) who put up nine points immediately as the size mismatch kicked in and Malta was within two at the break. Malta were back in the lead halfway through the third quarter as Nelson Kahler (206-C/F-1994, college: CSU-Pueblo) found his first two buckets of the game, Tevin Falzon scoring point number 23 from the top of the key before finding another three-ball with 3.26 to go in the quarter. Montenegro found themselves ahead before the buzzer with a three-pointer to set up a do-or-die fourth quarter. Eric Washington (183-PG-1993, college: Miami, OH) fired in a perfect corner three as the final 10 minutes began but Montenegro hit back with threes of their own to push the margin to six points with 6.46 remaining. Tevin Falzon brought it down to two points with his 31st point of the game and put Malta in the lead with yet another straight after. Montenegro responded with a long-ranger of their own but Washington fired back as Malta led by one in the final two minutes of the quarter. Aaron Falzon (203-F-1996, college: Quinnipiac) fouled out for the second time this week as Montenegro tied from the freethrow line with 1.07 to go but Washington replied with two points of his own to keep the crowd on its feet. Tension grew at the pavilion very late on as arguments erupted giving Malta no less than five free shots after technical foul calls. Washington made two from the line before further arguments began again. Officials then had no choice but to stop the game with 10.6 seconds remaining with the Malta crowd in celebration mode and the team in the final.

The Eisbaeren Bremerhaven Will Always Be A Positive Experience For Quincy Diggs Who Wants To Continue To Play Until His Legs Don't Work Anymore - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber
Quincy Diggs (198-F-1990, college: Akron, agency: Mansfield and Associates) is a 33 year old 198cm forward that is a professional player since 2015. He has played in countries like Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, and Switzerland. He began his basketball career at Plano high school and then played at the University of New Orleans and Akron amassing a total of 129 games. He recently took part at the Eisbaeren Bremerhaven 20 year anniversary game and gave eurobasket an interview.

Thanks Quincy for talking to eurobasket.com. Where are you at the moment and how is basketball life treating you?

At the moment I'm preparing for the next season of 3x3 in Serbia and basketball been treating me ok and want to accomplish more.

You last played in Switzerland and Hungary last season but currently have no team. Is your career on hold?

My career is waiting for an opportunity to play at a high level league and doing 3x3 in the summer.

Last season seemed to be a tough one for you. How has the market been this season compared to the 2 years during Covid?

For me it's been about winning I've been able to prove that I can't compete at a high level against euroleague, euro cup, and bcl etc etc but for me I haven't been on winning teams or making it to playoffs so it's hard to build your stock and show your worth. My individual qualities can compete against anybody but if your not winning during the season it doesn't matter in Europe period.

You recently returned back to Bremerhaven to play in the 20 year anniversary game. With what kind of feelings did you return back to Bremerhaven?

Feelings came back for sure and felt good to back in the arena and to be appreciated by the fans. Won some tough games in that arena and I fought each and every time I was on that court.

What was it like seeing all these guys back? There were some guys you had never seen before while other guys you knew?

For me I've always been able to play with anybody due to my personality. I'm not a selfish guy on the court or off the court so I wasn't worried about who I was playing with or didn't know because it was an fun event and some competing

Talk a little about the game. How was the game for you? You must have been one of the better guys in shape?

Yea I've been working out preparing for the upcoming season so I felt good out there of course and the game was very competitive and mostly fun for me I didn't like that we lost but I had to remember it was for fun.

Torrell Martin had an incredible game with 33 points despite being retired since 2015. Did it seem like he could still have been playing?

That guy is full of Energy and I can see why the fans loved him he showed so much enthusiasm during the game and also off the court that it is truly amazing.

He stays very much in shape and is going towards 40. Does a guy like that motivate you to continue to stay fit and live healthy?

For me I want to play basketball until my legs don't work anymore and to see that he's almost 40 and doing that just makes me smile and makes me think I can do the same as well.

How was the bonding with players and ex teammates. Was there a player that you really enjoyed talking to most?

I enjoyed them all I only knew Terrell and some of the others but the other guys that I didn't know was nothing but respect for them.

Was there a special play that you will remember most from the game?

I remember catching an alley op but instead of dunking it I did a layup back in my young days I would've dunk it lol

You played 1 season with the Eisbaeren as the team finished in 12th place. How do you remember that season?

The season for me was a learning season and a season where I got to compete against two euro leagues teams and it felt good to be playing in the BBL and showing my skills but unfortunately we didn't win enough games to make it to the playoffs. But I learned a lot from Sebastian and the assistant coach and it was a good learning experience for me playing in a high league

You had some veterans like Harper Kamp and Ivan Elliot. How instrumental were they for you as you were just in your second season?

Harper was a good leader me and him had a couple head butts during the season but at the end of the day I learned a lot from his leadership and Ivan was a great teammate on the court and off the court and it felt good learning from those guys and having them telling me that I'm a big part of this team.

You had many great games that season against Frankfurt and Oldenburg and helped beat Alba Berlin. What was your fondest memory on the court in a Eisbaeren jersey?

For me it was going against Bamberg who was Euroleague at the time and I was very motivated those games to prove that I can play at an even higher level but unfortunately both games were neck and neck and lost both.

Do you still follow your ex team? How tough is it to see them toil in the second league?

I follow mostly all my teammates because off the court it was good chemistry and to see them and second league it's very unfortunate but hopefully they can work their way back up

Now that Lebron James became the NBA all-time leading scorer, is he now the real goat?

MJ THE REAL GOAT 6 rings two 3peats and he took a break from the NBA and still dominated. LeBron will be the goat in my book if he has six rings with all the other stuff he accomplished. LeBron is a goat but the real goat is MJ.

Thanks Quincy for the chat.

LUXEMBOURG

The FLBB squad kept playing at a high pace and took a 22:8 lead after Malcolm Kreps (195-G/F-2001)' buzzer beater to end the first quarter. However, Cyprus managed to storm back before the break and Luxembourg only had a 4-point lead at half-time (34:30). MALTA

NBA
Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray lead Nuggets to Game 1 victory over Heat in NBA Finals - by Eurobasket News
The biggest concern for the Miami Heat against the Denver Nuggets played out over four quarters in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Denver's explosive offense, loaded with size, versatility, options, quickness and talented scorers, proved too much for the Heat. The Nuggets toppled Miami 104-93 Thursday for a 1-0 series lead, and the winner of Game 1 in the Finals has won the championship 69.7% of the time. Game 2 is Sunday in Denver (8 p.m. ET, ABC). It was a great start for the Nuggets, who received an efficient scoring effort from two-time MVP Nikola Jokic (7'0''-C-1995) and his presence as a facilitator opened up opportunities for his teammates. Jokic recorded his ninth playoff triple-double this season with 27 points on 12 shots, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. He now has 15 playoff triple-doubles, third most all-time behind Magic Johnson (6'10''-G-1959, college: Michigan St.) (30) and LeBron James (6'8''-SF-1984) (28). Denver's Jamal Murray (6'4''-SG-1997, college: Kentucky) had 26 points, Aaron Gordon (6'9''-F-1995, college: Arizona) had 16 points (12 in the first quarter) and Michael Porter Jr. (6'10''-PF-1998, college: Missouri). added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Denver had ample space driving to the rim and shooting from distance and made 51.3% of its shots. Miami won Game 1 on the road in its three previous playoff series this season but wasn't able to pull that off against Denver, which improved to 9-0 at home in the postseason. "I reminded our group, if they didn't know that Miami went into Milwaukee and won Game 1. They went into the Garden in New York City and won Game 1. They won Game 1 up in Boston. So, we did not want them coming in here taking control of the series on our court," Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. The Heat trailed 84-60 with 40.6 seconds left in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 96-87 with 2:34 left in the fourth. But Denver had enough distance to secure the victory. "Our disposition, the multiple efforts, the resolve in the second half was much better," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "But you get to this level, it has to be complete games of that kind of disposition. Even if you have that, you are not always going to win all the possessions that you want." The Heat lacked the same shooting they had against Boston in the Eastern Conference finals. Bam Adebayo (6'10''-C-1997, college: Kentucky) scored a team-high 26 points and had 13 rebounds but he didn't have much help. Max Strus (6'6''-G-1996, college: DePaul) missed all 10 of his shots, including nine 3s, and Strus and Caleb Martin (6'7''-F-1995, college: Nevada) were a combined 1-for-17 from the field. The Heat shot 43.4% on 3s against the Celtics but just 13-for-39 (33.3%) against Denver. Jimmy Butler (6'7''-G/F-1989, college: Marquette) added a bland 13-point, seven-rebound, seven-assist effort for Miami. "Our game is not built just on the 3-point ball," Spoelstra said. "We have proven that time and time again. We can win games. We can win series, regardless of how the 3 is going. "But we also have ignitable guys. You see a couple go through and that also can become an avalanche. One way or the other, we have to find a way to get the job done."

Wizards To Hire Travis Schlenk In Front Office Role - by Eurobasket News
President Michael Winger plans to make his first addition to the Wizards' new-look front office, hiring former Hawks president of basketball operations Travis Schlenk as senior vice president of player personnel, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Josh Robbins of The Athletic confirms the news through his own league sources. While Schlenk is certainly a notable executive, Winger is still searching for a general manager to directly oversee the Wizards and their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, Wojnarowski adds. The new GM would report directly to Winger. Formerly an assistant GM in Golden State, Schlenk was hired as Atlanta's general manager in 2017 and had been the ninth longest-tenured head of basketball operations in the NBA until he moved into an advisory role in December. He was promoted to president of basketball ops in 2019. Schlenk launched a rebuild when he initially joined the Hawks and oversaw three losing seasons before the team turned things around in 2020/21, making a run to the Eastern Conference Finals. They have been ousted from the first round of the playoffs each of the past two seasons. During his tenure atop the team's front office, Schlenk swung two major draft trades to land Trae Young (for Luka Doncic and a future pick) and De'Andre Hunter; drafted John Collins, Kevin Huerter, Cam Reddish, and Onyeka Okongwu; and acquired Dejounte Murray from San Antonio in a blockbuster deal this past summer. Although the Hawks publicly announced Schlenk was transitioning to advisory role, subsequent reporting from Sam Amick of The Athletic indicated that he was no longer part of the operation in Atlanta and was free to leave for another team if he desired to. About five months later, he's landing in Washington D.C. According to Amick, Schlenk expressed reservations about the price to acquire Murray (three first-round picks, including two unprotected, and a pick swap), and that played a factor in him eventually stepping down. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also reported that Schlenk's relationship with Young had deteriorated after the point guard chartered a private flight home from Miami without telling anyone from the team during last year's playoffs. Young was later fined.

Sources: Suns finalizing deal to hire Frank Vogel as coach - by Eurobasket News
The Phoenix Suns are finalizing a deal to hire Frank Vogel as coach, sources told ESPN on Friday. The Suns offered Vogel the job Friday morning and are expected to complete terms on a long-term deal that will deliver him the chance to coach All-NBA stars Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, the sources said. Vogel emerged from a finalist group that included former Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers and Suns assistant Kevin Young, sources said. Vogel comes with a 2020 NBA championship as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, and a history of constructing elite defenses. The Suns were engaged in talks with Nick Nurse among a group of finalists before eventually landing on Vogel, another championship coach. Nurse accepted the Sixers job this week. Mat Ishbia, general manager James Jones and CEO Josh Bartelstein were among the principals who worked through the process to secure Vogel. The team has been pursuing a successor to Monty Williams, who was fired after Phoenix lost in the Western Conference semifinals to the eventual conference champion Denver Nuggets. Williams was hired earlier this week as the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons. Phoenix gave strong consideration to Young, who was Williams' top assistant, and the team is still hopeful that Young might stay on Vogel's staff, sources said. Young has several options elsewhere in the NBA, too. This will be the fourth time Vogel becomes a head coach, after stops with the Lakers, Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers. Before winning a title in L.A., Vogel led the Pacers to the Eastern Conference semifinals twice. Vogel has had the NBA's top-rated defense three times in his career -- twice with Indiana and once with the Lakers, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Knicks' Advantage in the NBA Summer: Building Stability and Seizing Opportunities - by Eurobasket
As the NBA summer approaches, the New York Knicks stand in a position that sets them apart from their counterparts. Although they may require a few strategic moves to reach the echelons of the league's elite, they possess a remarkable asset that distinguishes them from many other teams in the Eastern Conference: stability.

While other franchises grapple with coaching upheavals, roster uncertainties, and lingering doubts about their future, the Knicks have a golden opportunity to seize the moment and establish a solid foundation for triumph in the forthcoming season. By capitalizing on the prevailing flux within the league, the Knicks have the potential to secure a favorable position and pave their way toward resounding success.

A Changing Landscape in the East

The Eastern Conference has undergone significant changes, leaving room for the New York Knicks to make their mark and improve their New York Knicks NBA Championship odds. The 2021 champions, the Milwaukee Bucks, have a new coach in Adrian Griffin, whose effectiveness remains uncertain.

The Philadelphia 76ers, another every-year contender, also face coaching changes, and the presence of superstar James Harden hangs in the balance. Meanwhile, the conference's powerhouse, the Boston Celtics, find themselves at a crossroads, needing to make critical decisions regarding their roster, including the potential max contract for Jaylen Brown.

Amidst this landscape of uncertainty, the Knicks have an opportunity to position themselves strategically and bolster their chances of contending for the ultimate prize in the NBA.

Exposing the Contenders

The Knicks have proven themselves capable of competing with the top teams in the East. They exposed the Cleveland Cavaliers as pretenders in the playoffs and showcased their potential to challenge the Atlanta Hawks, who are rumored to be considering moving star player Trae Young.

While talented, the Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls have yet to reach their full potential. Even the Brooklyn Nets, despite their star-studded lineup, face uncertainty and find themselves with a lower ceiling than expected.

Learning from Past Mistakes

In previous seasons, the Knicks squandered opportunities when they experienced a taste of success. In 2013, following a 54-win season, they made questionable decisions that derailed their progress. Similarly, two years ago, after a surprising playoff bid, the team made regrettable moves in free agency and failed to build upon their success. However, Knicks President Leon Rose has shown signs of learning from these mistakes and has started to shape the team according to his vision.
Building a Foundation
Leon Rose has taken steps to build a team that aligns with his long-term goals. The acquisition of Jalen Brunson proved to be a home run, providing the team with a solid centerpiece. In-season moves, such as acquiring Josh Hart, have had an immediate impact, further strengthening the team's foundation. However, Rose faces crucial decisions in the upcoming free agency period, including re-signing Hart and making strategic moves to complement the existing roster.

Looking Ahead to EuroBasket

As the NBA summer approaches, the Knicks find themselves in a position of stability in an ever-changing Eastern Conference landscape. With teams facing uncertainties and transitions, they can leverage their stability and make smart moves that can propel them into the conference's upper echelon. By learning from past mistakes and building a solid foundation, the Knicks can position themselves as legitimate contenders for the 2023-24 season.

Additionally, while the focus of the NBA summer lies predominantly on the league's activities, it is worth noting that this offseason also coincides with the EuroBasket tournament. EuroBasket, the prestigious basketball competition featuring teams from across Europe, holds significance for several NBA players, including those on the Knicks roster.

For instance, the Knicks' own international star, Kristaps Porzingis, represented Latvia in the previous EuroBasket tournament, showcasing his skills on a global stage. The experience gained from competing against top European talent can be invaluable for players like Porzingis, providing them a different perspective and adding to their overall development.

This year's EuroBasket tournament promises to be no different, with fierce competition and the emergence of young talents who could potentially make their way to the NBA in the future. While the Knicks primarily focus on their NBA campaign, keeping an eye on EuroBasket and its outcomes can provide valuable insights into the basketball landscape beyond the league's borders.

NBA G LEAGUE
Steve Wojciechowski to coach Jazz G League team, sources say - by Eurobasket News
The Utah Jazz's G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars, is hiring former Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski as head coach, sources told ESPN on Friday. Wojciechowski, who has been living in the Salt Lake City area since departing Marquette in 2021, has been eager to make the leap into pro coaching and now lands with a franchise replete with young players and three first-round picks in the 2023 NBA draft. He had spent time around the Jazz organization over the past two years, especially in the 2021-22 season because of his longtime relationship with former Jazz coach Quin Snyder. Wojciechowski spent time this past season attending some Jazz practices and building a relationship with coach Will Hardy. Wojciechowski joins Snyder as one of several college coaches who have made the transition to the NBA through the G League, where teaching and development is often paramount to organizations over results in the standings. In seven seasons at Marquette, Wojciechowski had a 128-95 (.574) record with two trips to the NCAA tournament and one NIT appearance. After Marquette, he spent a summer as an assistant coach for USA Basketball's 2022 AmeriCup team. Wojciechowski was an All-American and national defensive player of the year at Duke, where he spent 15 seasons as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Experienced American Hassan Whiteside (213-C-1989) had a very impressive game in the last week for league's leader Quebradillas and that's him to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for week 35.
The 33-year old center had a double-double of 27 points and seventeen rebounds, while his team lost the game against Mayaguez (#4, 14-18) 79-84. Despite this loss Quebradillas managed to keep Puerto Rican BSN leading position. They afford to lose this game, but they have to be very careful to avoid similar "accidents". Quebradillas has a very solid 20-10 record, but they cannot be too comfortable about keeping top position. In the team's last game Whiteside had a remarkable 73.3% from 2-point range. He just recently signed at Quebradillas, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Marshall University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Whiteside is in league's top in points (3rd best: 22.0ppg) and averages solid 2.6bpg and 55.5% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last week's games was young American forward Jordan Cintron (203-F-1998) of Mayaguez. Cintron impressed basketball fans with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. It was enough for Mayaguez to edge the higher-ranked Quebradillas (#1, 20-10) by 5 points 84-79. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the top position in Group A. Mayaguez consolidated its place in top 4 of the standings. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 14-18 record. Cintron is one of the most experienced players at Mayaguez and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

The third best performed player last week was Australian Mitch Creek (196-F/G-1992) of second-ranked Guaynabo. Creek scored 26 points and grabbed ten rebounds. Despite Creek's great performance Guaynabo lost 92-95 to the lower-ranked Fajardo (#5, 13-19). But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Guaynabo needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams in Group B. Their record is 17 victories and 13 lost games. Creek has a great season in Puerto Rico. After 19 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 20.0ppg (7th best). He also has FGP: 55.7% and 3PT: 45.6%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (201-F-1995) of San German - 26 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists
5. DeMarcus Cousins (211-C/F-1990) of Guaynabo - 22 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists
6. Ivan Gandia-Rosa (185-PG-1997) of Fajardo - 24 points and 4 rebounds
7. Archie Goodwin (196-G-1994) of Fajardo - 19 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists
8. Paris Bass (207-F/C-1995) of Arecibo - 16 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists
9. Victor Liz (190-SG-1986) of Arecibo - 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists
10. Tremont Waters (180-PG-1998) of Carolina - 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists

Power forward Andrija Bojic (208-PF-1993) had an amazing evening in the last round for Spartak, receiving a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 6 (Second Stage).
The 29-year old player was the main contributor (24 points, five rebounds) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Zlatibor (#4, 0-5), Second Stage bottom-ranked team 90-75. Spartak maintains the 3rd position in their group in Serbian KLS. Spartak is rather a weak team placed in lower part in the standings. But it was their 3rd lost game this season out of 5 games. Bojic turned to be Spartak's top player in his first season with the team. Andrija Bojic averages this season 14.6ppg.

The second best player in last round's games was young Croatian Andrija Jelavic (207-F-2004) of league's second-best OKK Beograd. Jelavic had a very good evening with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Bad luck as OKK Beograd was edged by slightly higher-ranked FMP BG (#1, 5-1) 84-82. His team's 4-2 record is not bad at all. Jelavic is one of the most experienced players at OKK Beograd and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

Third on the list of top players last round was center Uros Lukovic (213-C-1989) of Metalac VL (#4). Lukovic scored 16 points and grabbed eleven rebounds (!!!). Despite Lukovic's great performance Metalac VL lost 78-90 to #1 ranked Mega BG. But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. Metalac VL can only dream about fighting for top spots in Super Liga B. They have awful Second Stage losing so far all 5 games. Lukovic has individually a great season in Serbia. After 30 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 9.7rpg (#1 in league). He also has 1.7bpg and FGP: 65.3%.

Even 12 points and 4 assists by Brazilian-Italian point guard Marcelinho Huertas (191-1983) did not help to save the game for Tenerife. Argentinian swingman Leandro Bolmaro (198-2000) added 11 points for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games.

Valencia - Barca 64-87

Barca had a 28-15 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 18 long-distance shots on high 58.1 percentage. Four Barca players scored in double figures. Even 8 points and 8 rebounds by Montenegrin center Bojan Dubljevic (205-1991) did not help to save the game for Valencia. The former international Victor Claver (208-1988) added 6 points and 5 rebounds for the hosts. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest.

UGANDA
Kumbai's double-double lands him Player of the Week award - by Eurobasket News
Joseph Kumbai had a very impressive game in the last round for Ndejje Angels and receives a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 15.
He had a double-double of 23 points and 25 rebounds, while his team lost the game against Our Saviour (#5, 6-4) 53-65. Ndejje Angels maintains the 11th position in Ugandan league. Too late to salvage the team, which is currently ranked such low. They already lost 8 games and recorded just three victories. In the team's last game Kumbai had a remarkable 55.6% from 2-point range. He turned to be Ndejje Angels' top player in his first season with the team. Kumbai has impressive league stats. He leads league in rebounds with 14.5rpg. Kumbai

Second best performed player last round was Samad Imran (F-1993) of Power. He is a forward in his first (recently joined) season at Power. In the last game Imran recorded impressive double-double of 15 points and 19 rebounds. Of course Power cruised to a 63-55 relatively comfortable win over slightly higher-ranked Our Saviour (#5, 6-4). Power's 6th position in the standings has not changed. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 5-6 record. Imran is one of the most experienced players at Power and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

Third place about best performers goes to guard Gideon Kasasa (G-1998) of Kampala R. (#10). Kasasa showcased his all-around game by recording 23 points, ten rebounds and four assists in the last round. Despite Kasasa's great performance Kampala R. lost 68-94 to the league's current leader City Oilers (#1, 11-0). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. Kasasa has individually a great season in Uganda. After 11 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in assists with 3.8apg (5th best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Ruai Luak (196-G/F-2004) of City Oilers - 14 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists
5. Isaac Afidra (F/C-1985) of Power - 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists
6. Jimmy Enabu (187-PG) of City Oilers - 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists

Fletcher Returns Home - by Jeff King
An Article by Scott Venci - Green Bay Gazette

One of the best players in University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball history is returning to his alma mater.

Former point guard Rahmon Fletcher (178-PG-1988, college: Green Bay) has been hired by first-year coach Sundance Wicks to serve as director of player development.

Fletcher will not be part of recruiting, but he will have several roles.

He will help coach during practice and always will be available afterward for individual work. If a player wants to put up extra shots or engage in a game of one-on-one, they can call Fletcher and he will be there for them.

Fletcher also will help bridge the gap between the program and the alumni while assisting with a Phoenix Fund that generates money for scholarships, travel and academic programming.

Fletcher was born and raised in Kansas City, but Green Bay became a home away from home during his Phoenix career.

It feels good to be back.

'It's amazing,' said Fletcher, who played for former coaches Tod Kowalczyk and Brian Wardle at UWGB from 2007 to 2011. 'A lot has changed, but a lot hasn't changed. Going into the Dick Bennett gym, I've got a lot of memories of running suicides and 22's and things like that.

'I became a man here. When I came in, I was 18, 19, and I left and was able to go and play professionally. Those were the most important years of my life, especially from a basketball standpoint and a life standpoint.

'It's a full circle moment, and I'm super excited.'

Fletcher's name is splashed all over UWGB's record book more than a decade after graduating.

He is tied for sixth with Alec Brown on the all-time scoring list (1,678), is fourth in steals (197), fifth in games played (128), sixth in assists (438), seventh in field goals (633) and tied for ninth with former teammate Mike Schachtner for 3-pointers (150).

Fletcher made the Horizon League all-conference team three times and averaged 13.1 points, 3.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds during his career.

He and Wicks didn't know each other before Wicks was hired by UWGB in March. Wicks eventually texted and called him while Fletcher was still finishing his professional season, and the two immediately clicked.

Fletcher believes the entire Phoenix coaching staff is top-notch, a group that includes assistants Pat Monaghan, Zach Malvik and Nic Reynolds and director of basketball operations Adam Owens.

The feeling is mutual.

'I am juiced for Fletch right now,' Wicks said. 'What a special opportunity for Rahmon Fletcher, one of Green Bay men's basketball all-time greats, to come back and serve in the capacity of mentoring, connecting, developing and differentiating our program from when he played here.

'The mission of our program since we got the job in March was to ignite the future Phoenix basketball while honoring the past. Fletch is that connection to two elite eras in the storied UWGB pastime.'

Wicks said UWGB athletic director Josh Moon and Chancellor Michael Alexander have been instrumental in the new path.

'We are only 80 days into this mission,' Wicks said. 'We have already seen massive growth, connectivity, commitment and community support for the rise of the Phoenix.'

Two Back For Nix - by Jeff King
Cheshire Phoenix are delighted to announce that Maceo Jack and David Ulph (198-F) will be continuing with the Phoenix for the 2023/24 season.

David joined the club from Manchester Giants and proved to be a fan favourite for the Nix' this season with his never say die attitude.

The 6'7 forward averaged 5.5ppg and 5.5rbs this season helping the club achieve their highest place finish and first playoff semi final since 2016.

Head Coach Ben Thomas

'Bringing Ulph back was a really easy decision, he is a great team mate and person to have around the club. On the court he continuously improved throughout the season and played a huge part in the run in over the last couple of months.

I know he's become a fan favourite due to his blue collar work rate on the floor and we will be looking for him to bring that same energy again next season. I'm really looking forward to working with him again.'

David Ulph

'I am really happy to return to Cheshire for my second season. Nix Nation have treated me like family and I'm really excited to continue to improve and build on the successful year we've just had together #LETSGONIX'

Announcing the re-signing of American forward Maceo Jack who joined the club part way through the season and provided them with some spectacular high flying dunks. He averaged 9.5ppg and 4.4rbs helping the team to a BBL Trophy Final and 5th place finish.

Maceo Jack

'I'm excited to rejoin the Phoenix for a second year. I am looking forward to building upon what we did last year and reaching new heights. Nixnation really embraced me this past season and I can't wait to play in front of you guys at EPSV again'

Ben Thomas

'We're really happy to have Maceo back with us for another season. He continued to improve as the season went on and we know he will carry on in the same way next year. Over the past month and a half Maceo has shown his versatility in playing multiple positions on floor and putting the teams needs first. This is definitely the team-first type of play'

Return Of The Mack - by Jeff King
Leicester Riders are excited to announce the return of point guard Kimbal Mackenzie (187-G-1996, college: Bucknell) for the 2023/24 season.

Mackenzie has proved a fan-favourite in his two seasons in Leicester, earning the Supporters Club Player of the Year last season - voted for by the Riders faithful.

His 12.7 points and 3.8 assists also saw him named on the Molten BBL British Team of the Year alongside teammate Patrick Whelan.

'Kimbal has been excellent for us and we are thrilled to have him back at the club. We have enjoyed working with him these past two seasons, he is a player who comes ready to play every day,' reflected Head Coach Rob Paternostro.

'He is a versatile guard who can be effective in many different spots on the floor and has shown the ability to make winning plays in important moments of the game.'

'His ability to fill different roles last seasons was very impressive.'

Mackenzie put in countless team-leading performances throughout the 2022/23 season, perhaps none better than his 31 point explosion against the Cheshire Phoenix in February. He went 11-15 from the field and 7-7 from the free-throw line in the Riders' 105-91 win.

'My family and I are thrilled to be returning to Leicester for my third season,' commented Kimbal. 'The experience that we have had within the city and with the fans has been amazing. I look forward to continuing the winning ways of the Riders. Since day one, Leicester has felt like home, and in the business of being a professional athlete, it can be rare to be with the same team for multiple years, so I'm thankful for that.'

'I'm happy to still be playing in front of the best fans in the league! A fanbase that makes Morningside one of the best home court advantages in the league, and fans that frequently travel across the country to support us.'

'In deciding to come back, it's the culture that Coach Rob has built for years that played a big part. Rob is a players' coach, and the ultimate competitor, someone who I love going to battle with. I look forward to playing with a great group of guys, and to winning a lot of basketball games!'

Mackenzie's form earned him his first call-up to the Great Britain Senior squad, making his debut in a FIBA World Cup Qualifier against Serbia in Belgrade.

COLOMBIA
Valentina Molina claims Colombian LSBF weekly honour - by Eurobasket News
Valentina Molina (F-1997) had an amazing evening in the last round for Bogota and that's her to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 6.
The 25-year old forward had the game-high 9 points adding eight rebounds and four assists for Bogota in her team's victory, helping them to beat Soacha (#6, 0-3), the league's bottom-ranked team 52-47. Bogota is placed at 4th position in Colombian LSBF. They maintain a perfect record without any lost game in the league. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Bogota won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. Molina just recently signed at Bogota, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Valentina Molina averages this season 4.4ppg and 5.1rpg.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young international power forward Tania Valencia (177-F/C-1994) of Caldas. Valencia impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Bad luck as Caldas lost that game 43-67 to Southwest's leader Indeportes (#1, 5-0). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the top position in Southwest. Caldas still maintains its place in the top 4 of the standings, even despite this loss. Her team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 2-3 record. Valencia is one of the most experienced players at Caldas and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. She belongs to the best scorers in the league with 13.0ppg (#6). She also registered 7.7 boards per game.

The third best performed player last round was Lizeth Cuadros (F-1995) of Raptors (#3). Cuadros scored 15 points. Despite Cuadros' great performance Raptors lost 49-69 to #1 ranked Indeportes. But her team cannot count on just a single player as she also needs help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. The chances of Raptors ranking at the top of Southwest, however are very questionable as they have already lost 3 games, recording just two victories. With bigger assistance of her teammates, Cuadros could help Raptors to bring them higher in the standings. Cuadros has a great season in Colombia. After only 5 games, she made it on the list of the league's leaders in assists with 3.4apg (3rd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Mederith Venner) of Caqueta - 13 points and 9 rebounds
5. Yuliany Paz (195-F-2000) of Indeportes - 10 points and 12 rebounds
6. Lady Quiroga (F-2001) of Cundinamarca - 21 points and 11 rebounds
7. Diana Prens (170-F-1995) of Raptors - 7 points and 13 rebounds
8. Angela Ibanez) of Bogota - 9 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists
9. Wendy Coy (178-F/C-1998) of Guerreros - 13 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Valentina Lopez (1994) of Caldas - 10 points and 10 rebounds

With more than twenty years of experience, Hoops Agents is already recognized as the most reliable destination for the players who wish to continue their career in professional basketball and are searching for a reputable and connected representation. Amanda Cahill leads Luxembourg past Malta - by Eurobasket News
Malta's women suffered their second loss in two days after having won their first game in the Games. Against Montenegro on Wednesday, the Maltese were far from their best and this showed in the final score. On Thursday Angela Adamoli 's side was close in stature but struggled to keep up as Luxembourg led throughout. Once again, Amber Melgoza (178-G-1998, college: Washington) led Malta's scoring with 13 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists, as Stephanie De Martino (184-F-1993) scored another 10 and four rebounds as the second double-digit scorer on the team. Ashleigh Van Vliet scored seven but grabbed 12 boards in a more defensive contribution to the game. Luxembourg's Amanda Cahill (188-F-1996, college: Indiana, agency: LBM Management) looked the danger in the opening stages when she scored eight of her 20 as her team's leading scorer. De Martino hit three long-rangers in between makes from Melgoza, Josephine Diaby and Sophie Abela as Danika Galea (185-C-2005) brought the game to within three at the first buzzer. Ehis Etute, who finished with 10 points, took over the second quarter for Luxembourg but the game saw six lead changes before the halftime break. De Martino and Diaby pushed for Malta in the third quarter but Luxembourg looked stronger as they held onto a single-digit lead until the end, finishing the game with a nine-point gap.

Luxembourg advance into title game as they see off Malta - by Eurobasket News
It was a fast-paced encounter as Malta aimed for revenge after a tough finish in the opening stages. Just like the previous games, Amber Melgoza (178-G-1998, college: Washington) finished as Malta's top scorer with 23 points, adding 10 rebounds for a double-double, as well as four assists. Stephanie De Martino (184-F-1993) scored 18, grabbing four boards and making four assists. Amelia Simmons (181-F-1987, college: WILMU) rounded off the double-digit scoring with 12 points. Both sides pushed on offence from the tip-off with Luxembourg's Ehis Etute maintaining her momentum from the previous game to hit the ten-point mark within the first quarter as Melgoza fired in eight with Luxembourg leading by just one point by the end of the quarter. The lead changed a minute into the second rubber with a De Martino mid-range effort but Luxembourg pushed with a set of threes to retake control. Midway through the quarter, an Ashleigh Van Vliet (180-SG-1990) steal was vital as Luxembourg were forced to call time out after the Malta player brought the sides back level after a fast break score. However, lapses of concentration in the Malta camp led to Luxembourg opening a seven-point margin with a minute to go in the first half. After the break, Malta came out strong, scoring on their first possession and holding Luxembourg with tough defence. De Martino won her battle under the rim to give Malta the lead with 7.40 to go in the third quarter. Another pair of De Martino threes sent fans into ecstasy as Malta now led by four, their largest lead so far, midway through the quarter. Melgoza made it eight with a layup and two free throws as Luxembourg began to struggle on offence, faltering under the newfound energy of the Malta players. Foul trouble proved the intensity of the encounter as both sides were in the bonus with two minutes to go in the rubber. Etute made it a three-point game again before Simmons completed an and-one play to close the third quarter at 58-54. Luxembourg retook a six-point lead at the start of the final 10 minutes, assuring a tense finale to the game with a pair of threes. The deficit for Malta grew to nine after four minutes as the side were now in danger of losing rhythm. De Martino stopped the Luxembourg run to bring it back to seven. Final efforts for Malta brought it as low as four but late free throws saw Luxembourg progress to the gold medal game.

Lynx come up just short vs. Connecticut, fall to 0-6 this season - by Eurobasket News
Minutes after a tense, rally-filled fight that ended with a 89-84 loss to the Connecticut Sun, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve sat on the podium, rested her chin in her hand and found no silver linings. "You have to win your home games. You have to win your home games," she lamented. "It's not OK. Our fans adore us. They expect different from us." The difference that Reeve expects is a defensive identity that doesn't fold at key moments. "You have a team right there and you give up layups," she said, disgust dripping off the last word. "You don't know the play that's coming? [Assistant coach] Katie [Smith] tells them what play is coming. They still get layups on us." If frustration is settling in, there's good reason. The Lynx fell to 0-6 and are one loss away from matching the worst start in franchise history when they went 0-7 to open the 2007 season, three years before Reeve took over. Napheesa Collier (6'3''-F-1996, college: UConn), who was electric offensively all night with a season-high 30 points on 10-for-18 shooting, said the pattern for the Lynx is growing tired. "The game was for the taking for us, but due to stupid moves on our part, turnovers or letting them score in the paint, we let it slip through our fingers," she said. "We need to learn how to win. We could be 4-2 right now, easily." Nothing came easy Thursday night. The Lynx were gritty and resilient. They attacked the Connecticut defense and hit their first 20 free throws to keep the game close. They didn't quit after giving up a 12-0 run to start the third quarter and falling behind by 15. Late in the fourth quarter they tied the score 79-79. With 1 minute, 31 seconds remaining, Dorka Juhasz (6'5''-F-1999, college: UConn) was at the line with a chance to take the lead - and she missed both attempts. If it showed resiliency, Reeve said it highlighted an opposing attribute just as well. "Why do you get down 15?" she asked. "You don't play defense in the third, at all. At all. They scored 10 points in three minutes and we didn't score." Does she take anything from battling back? "I don't," she said. Throughout the night, Connecticut was the more balanced team. The Sun surged offensively off 14 Lynx turnovers and outscored Minnesota on the fast break 13-2. Even more telling, Connecticut held a 52-26 advantage on points in the paint. Alyssa Thomas was as advertised for the Sun, scoring 16 points to go along with 16 assists and nine rebounds - and when the team needed her most, she scored six of the Sun's final eight points in the final 3:40 of the game. "There is nobody that plays the game harder than her, smarter than her," Reeve said. Natisha Hiedeman (5'8''-PG-1997, college: Marquette), who the Lynx drafted in 2019, added a crucial spark in the second half for Connecticut. She finished with a team-high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting. The Lynx used their fifth starting lineup in six games this season, this time because of the loss of rookie guard Diamond Miller (6'3''-G-2001, college: Maryland) - who was averaging 12.4 points on 53.5% shooting to go along with 3.6 rebounds and three assists per game. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA draft is out indefinitely because of an ankle injury that had her in a walking-boot with crutches on the sideline. Reeve said the medical team would likely have an update on Miller's status Friday. Her absence isn't going to make the search for a win any easier. Next comes a two-game road trip before the Lynx return home to celebrate their 25th anniversary on June 9 vs. Indiana. "You have to keep going," Reeve said. "There is no end in sight."
