Double-digit Canadian university scorers drafted by Niagara River Lions - by Eurobasket News
Players who averaged double digits in scoring for their university teams during the 2022-23 fall-winter season are the picks of the Niagara River Lions in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) draft. Aiden Warnholtz (6'2''-G, college: Carleton), a 6-foot-2 guard from Ottawa, was selected eighth overall in the two-round draft and Jordan Tchuente (6'6''-G, college: Brock), a 6-foot-7 forward, also from the nation's capital, was taken by Niagara with the 13th pick. In his fifth, and final season, of post-secondary eligibility, Warnholtz earned his fourth national men's championship with the Carleton Ravens while breaking seven program records, including regular-season assists, with 145; most assists in the playoffs, 46; and minutes played. The five-time Academic All-Canadian finished the season averaging 17 points, 6.6 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game. Warnholtz was named the most valuable player and selected to the first all-star team at nationals. River Lions general manager-head coach Victor Raso called Warnholtz a 'skilled, smart and competitive guard who plays the right way.' 'He is a winner, comes from a winning program, and is an excellent person,' said Raso, who won two U Sports championships as a player and one as an assistant coach at Carleton after transferring from McMaster University in his native Hamilton. Warnholtz, a bachelor of science graduate, is 'grateful for the opportunity' to compete in the CEBL, a spring-summer league that, at 71 per cent, has the highest percentage of home-grown players of any professional league in Canada. 'I'm looking forward to being on a team that has championship aspirations as I develop my own game under Coach Raso and learn alongside seasoned pros.'
Jordan Tchuente is returning to the River Lions after signing a development contract with the St. Catharines-based team for the 2022 CEBL season. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds in nine games with Niagara and 10.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists at Brock University. His second year with the Badgers was highlighted by career highs in points, with 24; and rebounds, 15; while finishing second in Canada with seven double-doubles. 'Dino (Jordan) made an excellent impression on us last season, and we knew we wanted him back as a River Lion for 2023. He is tough, physical and plays bigger than he is,' Raso said. 'Most importantly he is an incredible teammate. 'He had a great season for a great Brock program, and we're excited to welcome him back.' Jordan Tchuente is glad to be back with the River Lions for a second year of seasoning. 'It's a great opportunity for me to learn, develop and contribute, and I can't wait to get to work,' he said.
Simon Hildebrant, a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 16.9 points and five rebounds for the University of Manitoba, was selected first overall by the expansion Winnipeg Sea Bears. In all, 20 players were drafted. A partnership between the league and U Sports, the governing body for university sports in Canada, gives student-athletes a chance to hone their hoops skills during the summer months without affecting their post-secondary eligibility. Players who may have completed their university careers in 2021-22 or can return to their university teams this fall were eligible to be selected in the U Sports. 'This 2023 draft class is elite. We can't wait to see everyone take the court starting May 24 and hope that experiences and opportunities like this continue to help showcase and nurture the depth of talent within U Sports program across this country,' CEBL commissioner and co-founder Mike Morreale said. 'The future of pro basketball in Canada has never been brighter.' The River Lions play three road games - Friday, May 26, Montreal Alliance; Tuesday, May 30, Calgary Surge; Wednesday, May 31, Edmonton Stingers - before tipping off the home half of the 20-game regular season versus the Saskatchewan Rattlers on Saturday, June 3, at Meridian Centre.

Guy Edi (Basketball Lowen Erfurt) Knows They Will Have To Out Tough Their Opponent And Will Fight Until The End Against Either Koblenz Or Schwelm - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber
Guy Landry Edi (198-PF-1988, college: Gonzaga) is a 34 year old 198cm forward from France that is playing his second season with the Basketball Lowen Erfurt. He played at Midland College (JUCO) and played 56 NCAA games for Gonzaga (NCAA). After Gonzaga hee played 7 years in France playing 70 plus game sin the Pro A and Pro B and also played in Finland and Iceland. He spoke to eurobasket after sweeping the Dragons Rhondorf.

Congrats on the massive 72-65 game 2 win and sweep over the Dragons Rhondorf. How tough was this series? Rhondorf seemed to give you everything they had?

It was a tough series. Rhondorf is a good team that is well coached. We came in with experience in the playoffs. We knew they would make runs but we also knew if we stuck to what we do best that we would win.

What was your first reaction when you saw Devon Goodman wasn't to play?

We didn't know until game time that he wouldn't play. I was surprised. The game actually became more complicated for us. We prepared for the game letting him shoot, but once he didn't play we had to defend all. It was a quick adjustment we made and it worked. Bringing energy was key and we did that.

The Basketball Lowen Erfurt started slowly being down 6-0 as Paul Albrecht scored 3 baskets in a row. Did the Goodman shock ease your defensive pressure?

No I don't think so. They also had a quick start in game one. That didn't mean anything. It just told us we had to play better defense.

Erfurt then found their rhythm and led 21-13 after 10 minutes. You got going showing your special game. How much did your dunk push your teammates?

My dunk was a statement at that time. It gave my teammates energy and got the crowd involved. The dunk gave us a boost but they did come back. There was still a lot of time to play.

In the second quarter, Erfurt only got one basket from you and got a lot of production from guys like Lorenz Schiller and Jan Heber. Please talk a little about how each guy has helped the team best this season?

Lorenz has done a great job stepping up since Noah Kamdem was out. He is our best shooter and really opens up the floor. His play and presence also allows me to operate more. He really has stepped up and has been more of a threat. Jan is a point guard that also ahs stepped up big since his injury.

The Dragons Rhondorf staged a massive 11-5 run in the last 3 minutes of the third quarter to trail only 57-53. What was key for the guests making the comeback?

We got a little gassed. They only ran one play posting up the wing. They were just a little more aggressive than we were.

What words of wisdom did head coach Enrico Kufour give the team for the last 10 minutes?

He told us to stay composed. He told us just to keep doing what had gotten us there. He also wanted us to get more easy baskets on transition and push the ball more so they couldn't set up their defense.

Erfurt only allowed 12 points in the fourth quarter. What adjustments did the team make on the defensive end?

We just knew that then was the time to step up our defense. We knew that if they wanted to beat us then they would have to do it with Bangala. We didn't overhelp and knew only he could beat us. We knew key would be to slow down their shooters Koch and Buchholz.

Tyseem Lyles made the clutch shot of the night despite shooting 4/16 from the field and 1/9 from outside. Did you give him confidence to keep shooting?

I have told him to keep shooting since day 1. I kept telling him to keep doing what he does. The three he made set the game for us. At the end of the day his continuing to shoot the ball paid off for us. In the playoffs games won't always be pretty. They adjusted well on me from game 1. We are a team and everyone did their part.

Zaba Bangala had a huge game with 23 points. What will you always remember from his game?

He is a very athletic and strong player. He has a lot of room for improvement. He can be a better player. I hope that he continues to keep working hard.

This was the lowest points the team gave up this season. Was this the best defensive game of the season?

I'm not sure if it was our best defensive game of the season. I feel like we have been a good defensive team all season long and we know we are a good defensive team. Game 2 didn't look pretty but we got the win.

You most likely will meet the EPG Baskets Koblenz next. You lost both games to Koblenz. With what expectations are you going into the game?

We will fight. Koblenz had the best record in the Pro B. They are a very good team with experience and are well coached. They are a complete team that have good players at each position. We played well in Koblenz. I feel like we can beat them. We will go in focused and have energy. We know that people will write us off but we will fight until the end.

How are the Basketball Lowen Erfurt a better team now then the last time they met Koblenz?

We were a better team after the first game and a better team after the second game. We made changes on offense and defense and have created a good chemistry. Plus we got guys back from injury.

What will be key to upsetting the EPG Baskets Koblenz?

We need to do a better job rebounding and not let them get second chances. We have to be tough and just out tough them. Then I feel we can play eye to eye.

Thanks Guy for the chat.

Brandon Childress (medi Bayreuth) Remembers Battling RJ Barrett And Understands That You Have To Run The Race To Reach The Highest Level - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber
In the NCAA players see potential NBA Draft picks and future NBA players on a weekly basis and predicting who will become that next NBA player sometimes can be as difficult as guessing correctly if Luka Doncic will make that next triple double in a NBA game or sometimes as easy as knowing that Giannis will be in beast mode every night for 48 minutes. It was March 5th, 2019 near the end of Brandon Childress (183-PG-1997, college: Wake Forest)'s junior year at Wake Forest when he was set to battle Duke again, a team he had previously never beat before but came close twice as a freshman, but on this night, getting that first win again would be stopped as he fell to 0-5, but once again came very very close to winning as he lost a nailbiter of a game 71-70. In the game he battled a very talented player with RJ Barrett, a player where there was no doubt that he would reach the NBA. In the game, Barrett was the top scorer with 28 points and Childress contributed 19 points. Despite scoring more points, Barrett wasn't the best player on the floor as he coughed up the ball 7 times and Childress even had a better game rating than him. A few months later he was picked 3rd overall by the Knicks and the rest is history as he is on the way of becoming a superstar. And what happened to Childress? Well he had to toil 2 years in Estonia and now is one of the better point guards in a top 5 league easyCredit BBL, but on a losing team with medi Bayreuth. Ok so Barrett was a lot better statistically than Childress in the 2018-2019 season, but there have been guys with lesser stats than Childress reach the NBA. This just shows again that the NCAA and G-League is filled with hundreds of talented guards that could play in the NBA, but there are just not enough roster spots. The American guard never forgot this encounter and also knows how to handle seeing who makes the NBA and not. 'RJ Barrett and I had a back and forth battle in that game. I woke up a bit in the second half. We were missing a big man and I think had we had him that night, then we would have gotten over the hump. I have seen so many guys that I got the best of in college go to the NBA. You have to run your race. It's a journey. I remain positive because I know that there have been so many guys go to Europe and then go back to the NBA and stick like PJ Tucker. You just have to find the right opportunity and remain patient', warned Brandon Childress. He will never forget battling RJ Barrett and knows he has to run the race in order to reach the highest level.

Brandon Childress was born on August 31st, 1997 in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Winston Salem North Carolina. He played football as a kid and began to play basketball at the age of 9. He is the son of Randolph a guy that played in the NBA with Portland and Detroit and was overseas for more than a decade. Many will remember his time at Wake Forest where he was teammates with Tim Duncan and averaged 35,0ppg in the ACC tournament and scored 37 points in the title game and hit a game winner with 4 seconds over North Carolina that had Jery Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace. His dad definitely had a huge basketball influence in his life. 'He made a huge sacrifice for my mom and me by playing overseas so he could provide for us. I can always go to him for advice. Whatever I go through overseas, he has also seen it. When I'm frustrated or have a problem good, bad or ugly, I can go to him', stressed Brandon Childress. Later the family moved to North Carolina where he played 2 years for East Forsyth high school. In his second season he helped lead his team to the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic title. He then played his last 2 years of high school ball at Wesleyan Christian Academy together with Harry Giles. He then chose Wake Forest (NCAA) where he would play from 2016-2020.

When you hear the name Wake Forest one instantly thinks of Tim Duncan and Chris Paul. For the guard who remembers Trey Jones being his most difficult cover in the NCAA had Chris Paul on his mind when he went to Wake Forest. 'Chris Paul definitely played a role for me going there. I actually had met him before I went there when I was in high school. Wake Forest has had many great guards come out like Ishmail Smith and Muggsy Bogues. Whenever I did speak to him, I always try to ask him a few questions about basketball and try to pick something up', stated Brandon Childress. In his freshman year he helped the school reach the NCAA tournament losing to Kansas. Often for NCAA players, there is a break out game where a player finally feels that they belong. Even after scoring 16 points in a big win over North Carolina, he didn't feel like that game brought him on the NCAA map. 'I felt like I belonged the first day I stepped on the campus of Wake Forest. It was just a matter of proving people wrong', warned Brandon Childress. In his freshman year he was teammates with Mitchell Wilbekin who's brother Scottie played at Florida (NCAA) and for years has been a top guard in the Euroleague. 'I already knew of his brother. Scottie along with guys like Mike James, Shane Larkin and Malcolm Delaney are guys I pay attention to and have followed for years in Europe', said Brandon Childress. He played a total of 124 NCAA games and was able to improve his scoring average each season. His game really took off in his last two years as he averaged 14.7ppg, 3.8rpg, 4.0apg, 1.5spg, FGP: 40.4%, 3PT: 36.8%, FT: 79.6% and 15.6ppg, 3.0rpg, 4.6apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 46.3%, 3PT: 32.5%, FT: 80.9% and there was a reason for that. 'For me it was about understanding my role each season. In my first 2 years I followed the leaders and in my last 2 years I was the leader', expressed Brandon Childress. He played 61 NCAA games in his last 2 years and scored in double figures in 52 games including exploding for 30 points against North Carolina State and had 24 points against Boston College and Notre Dame. He also finally beat Duke as a senior in an exciting 113-101 win where he contributed 17/5/5 stats. 'It was one of the best feelings. It was the first time I had beat them. My dad had never lost to them, but he had had a lot of confidence in me. I did everything I could to help my team win', remembered Brandon Childress. He played for legendary ex NBA player Danny Manning who helped Kansas win the 1988 NCAA title who was instrumental in helping his game during the 4 years. 'Coach preached everyday that we wouldn't be getting this treatment with private jets and fancy restaurants everywhere. I understood that when I got to Greece. People forget that he was the NBA's best sixth man and an allstar. He had a lot of experience. He allowed me to play my game and just be myself', remembered Brandon Childress who never lost a 1-1 battle against Wake Forest teammate Adrien White in practice.

The 183cm point guard who lists Bam Adebayo, Denis Smith, Oliver Hanlon, Harry Giles and Aaron Wiggins as his best teammates of all-time began his professional career in 2020 in Greece for GS Iraklis Thessaloniki (Greece-A1), but that was only a short stay. He played 1 basketball Champions League game and 5 Greek games. 'I was there during COVID. It was tough. You couldn't really go outside so I really focused on basketball. In Greece I saw the reality of overseas basketball. In most countries English is the second language so it wasn't so hard for me to adapt. In some countries they speak little English. Americans just have to do some research before going to a country. I learned from the older vets like Skyler Bowlin how to act professional', warned Brandon Childress. He then finished his rookie season with AVIS UTILITAS Rapla (Estonia-KML) averaging 17.4ppg, 4.1rpg, Assists-2 (4.8apg), 1.3spg, FGP: 47.9%, 3PT: 37.3%, FT-2 (86.1%); and in the LatEstBL league averaged 22.8ppg, 4.0rpg, 3.9apg, 2.3spg, FGP: 52.4%, 3PT: 37.3%, FT: 81.6%.He lost his first playoff series against Parnu, but had some massive games against Ventspils scoring 36 points and hit Tartu for 28 points. Last season he played with TalTech Tallinn (Estonia-KML) averaging 24.2ppg, 2.8rpg, Assists-2 (6.0apg), Steals-1 (2.2spg), FGP: 53.2%, 3PT: 40.4%, FT: 80.4%; and in the EstLatBL averaged 23.9ppg, 3.3rpg, 6.6apg, 1.6spg, FGP: 45.7%, 3PT: 40.7%, FT: 87.9%. He reached the semi-finals in the playoffs and lost a tough 2 game series to Kalev/Cramo where he exploded for 56 points in the 2 games. 'It was a tough series. They had a great team that dominated the league. It was a big challenge but they were simply the better team. We really did all we could', expressed Brandon Childress. He had big games against Rapla with 35 points, hit Tallinna Kalev for 33 points and got the best of Ventspils again scoring 32 points. He definitely left his mark in Estonia scoring in double figures in 41 of 42 games. Last summer he played NBA Summer League with the Sacramento Kings playing 1 game and will never forget getting this opportunity. 'It was a total blessing. As a kid I always dreamed of playing in the NBA Summer League and had aspirations of playing in the NBA. I pray that I will get another opportunity to play in the NBA Summer League and then with more experience be able to exploit my talent. It's great to see my name on the jersey and see old AAU and college teammates play. The NBA Summer League is also a good place to meet new players. I got positive feedback from the Kings as they told me to keep working hard', said Brandon Childress.

The North Carolina native who lists Kobe, Lebron, Jordan and Tim Duncan on his personal NBA Mount Rushmore is playing his first season in the easyCredit BBL in Germany for medi Bayreuth. After paying his dues in lower leagues in Estonia, he was rewarded with a chance to play in a high league after having his share of ups and downs in his first 2 professional seasons. Even if medi Bayreuth are the door mat of the easyCredit BBL, he has learned to appreciate his time in a new country. 'The fan base is amazing where ever I go in Germany. It has been a blessing being able to play against teams like Munich or Alba Berlin. I see that the basketball community is really small here. It is like a fraternity of guys I played with or against in the states. We check up on each other and wish each other good health', stressed Brandon Childress. After reaching the playoffs in his first 2 seasons, the losing has been difficult. They won the first game of the season in exciting fashion 83-82 against Frankfurt, but after that the club lost 8 of 9 games that put them in this precarious situation. 'Nobody expected our season to go like that after the first win. Even if we have young guys, it has been a learning curve. We have to be patient and control what we can control and do our best. The losing has been part of the journey. The main goal now is to keep the team in the league. The BBL is a very tough league with 2 Euroleague teams. The BBL is a lot more competitive than in Estonia. The atmosphere against in Munich is something I didn't see in Estonia', warned Brandon Childress in March 2023. The club played FC Bayern Munich tough losing 80-79, but have had problems improving their defense as they allow 89 points per game. They seem to be a better team than their record shows. 'We recently had a coaching change and we still have to get used to things. We still have to break old habits. I feel like we are improving and I'm excited for the next games. We definitely are better than our record shows. I feel like we can turn the corner. We have enough time. We have to show the fans that we are willing to work hard. We have to do it for the fans', stressed Brandon Childress in March 2023. Even if he is a veteran, he has been more than fortunate to be able to call team captain Bastian Doreth a teammate. 'Basti has been a huge veteran. He has impacted me on and off the court. He is a huge role model for the community. He is a great mentor. He is the type of guy that you want to be like when you grow up. I hope they retire his jersey', added Brandon Childress.

The ex Wake Forest (NCAA) guard who has Kobe Bryant as his GOAT and believes that the classic Coming To America movie with Eddie Murphy should have been left alone is a point guard that has difficulty describing his game to an NBA player, but rather lets people do that. 'People have compared my game to Jeff Teague. I had a veteran my rookie season call me B Lillard, because I was one of the smaller guards that could really shoot the ball', smiled Brandon Childress. Even if his stats show that he is a scoring point guard, he continues to work hard to prove his doubters wrong, because he is so much more than just a guy that can score and shoot. 'I have been blessed to be able to shoot the ball really well, but people underestimate my play on the pick and roll. I feel like that my scoring opens up more opportunities for my teammates. I have shown that I can get 8 or 9 assists if I have to. I keep working on my facilitation and want to become an even bigger threat on offense', warned Brandon Childress. Currently he is averaging 17,2ppg, 3,2rpg, 4,7apg and 1,2spg while shooting 36% from outside. He exploded for 37 points with 8 three's in a tough loss to Heidelberg and hit Ludwigsburg for 35 points in a loss. He also wants to be known as a great defender as there are so many productive defensive guards in Europe. 'I feel like sky is the limit for me as a defender', warned Brandon Childress. He knows that in order to keep climbing the basketball ladder overseas, he will have to keep improving certain facets of his game. 'I'm working on slowing the game down. I was in a shooting slump, but once I settled down and let the game come to me, my game became more efficient. I also want to become a better finisher', warned Brandon Childress. It will be interesting to see where the basketball career of Brandon Childress will continue to go. He is just at the beginning of his basketball journey and race and knows he still has a lot of time to get to the peak of the mountain..

Bosire exudes confidence ahead of Terrorists clash - by Eurobasket News
Equity Bank Dumas playmaker Victor Bosire (175-PG-1988) is confident of convincingly winning Friday's Playoffs Game One quarter-final tie against the University of Nairobi Terrorists. He, however, warned that UoN are young and aggressive which must be taken seriously considering they won one of the two meetings during the regular season. The game tips off at 6 pm. "We need to take care of them early in the series and build a lead with each game," Bosire offered. The defensive stopper said they hope to use their experience and game management to prevail in play-offs. "The Kenya Morans' ace said Dumas's goal is to pull good results against their opponents after faring badly in last year's semi-final against KPA "Our failure last season was a learning curve and we hope to bounce back this year. Besides that was the first time we were featuring in playoffs," he added. He said the team has a deeper and more experienced squad this time around. On the other hand, UoN captain Dominic Adero said the team has experienced coaches and their training has gone well without disruptions. "All I can say is I respect our opponents. I can't promise anything whatsoever but we are coming to compete because I like our chances," he said The other game pitting Strathmore University Blades against Thunder also promises fireworks. The Blades tactician Tony Ochieng said they will go out to build momentum and use depth as the strategy to get the better of their rivals. Thunder coach Sadat Gaya observed that this is the longest regular season he has ever participated in. "It is a challenge getting any rhythm and playing great basketball. It also helped our players recover from injuries. Playoffs is a new season." "We are going against a team that eliminated us last season and also defeated us during the season," noted Gaya. The playoff matches will continue at the same venue with the visiting KPA teams, who are leading in both the men's and women's categories in action.

Best players of Montenegrin Prva B round 25 - by Eurobasket News
Vucko Markovic (2000) had a very impressive game in the last round for Rudar and that's him to receive a Hoops Agents Prva B Player of the Week award for round 25.
The 22-year old had the game-high 49 points adding nine rebounds and seven assists for Rudar in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Zeta (#11, 3-18) 103-100. The game was not the highest importance and did not have significant influence on top of the standings. Rudar maintains the 13th position in Montenegrin Prva B. The season is in a full swing, so it's only a dream for the team to make it into top half of the standings. For contrary they may face relegation if the situation turns from bad to worse. Rudar have already lost 21 games and recorded just two victories. In the team's last game Markovic had a remarkable 82.4% from 2-point range. He has many years of experience at Rudar, through which he has constantly improved. Markovic has impressive league stats. He is league's best scorer averaging so far 25.9ppg. The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young forward Drazen Radicevic (198-F-1989) of Zeta. The game was between two teams which are definitely not main contenders for the title. Zeta keeps 11th position. 18 lost games are too many comparing to just three victories Zeta managed to get this year. Radicevic is one of the most experienced players at Zeta and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

The third best performed player last round was another Zeta's star - Djordjije Tatar (2002). Tatar showcased his all-around game by recording 25 points, fourteen rebounds (!!!) and four assists in the last round. Despite Tatar's great performance Zeta lost 100-103 to slightly lower-ranked Rudar (#13, 2-21). But his team cannot count on just these two top stars as they also need help of the other teammates. Zeta can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have rather bad season and 3-18 record places them close to the bottom of the standings. Tatar has a very solid season. In 21 games in Montenegro he scored 12.6ppg. He also has 5.5rpg, 3.4apg, FGP: 54.5% and 3PT: 41.1%.

Phoenix' big three of Kevin Durant (6'9''-SF-1988, college: Texas), Devin Booker (6'6''-SG-1996, college: Kentucky) and Chris Paul (6'0''-PG-1985, college: Wake Forest) were all in go-mode. As a result, the scrappy and shorthanded Los Angeles Clippers are on the verge of going home for the summer. Durant scored 31 points, Booker added 30 and Paul bounced back big in the fourth quarter of a 112-100 victory over the Kawhi Leonard (6'7''-F-1991, college: SDSU)-less Clippers on Saturday to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the first-round playoff series. "It's definitely good when we all three are aggressive. We all did a solid job," said Durant, acquired in February from the Brooklyn Nets. "We're still growing and still trying to learn each other." The Clippers, who lost Game 3 by five points, again made a strong run with Leonard watching from the bench. He has missed two straight games with a sprained right knee. They're also without Paul George, who hasn't played since March 21 because of the same injury as Leonard. "This team is going to stick around the whole game," Durant said of the Clippers. "They're never out of a game." Game 5 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday in Phoenix. "We make no excuses around here," Clippers guard Russell Westbrook (6'3''-G-1988, college: UCLA) said. "We just got to make sure we rally around each other, keep competing and leave it on the floor." Westbrook, who joined the Clippers in February, carried them in the fourth. He had 14 points, including nine in a row when they twice pulled within two points. Westbrook finished with a game-high 37 points. Norman Powell (6'4''-SG-1993, college: UCLA) added 14 points and Terance Mann (6'7''-G-1996, college: FSU) had 13 off the bench. But as the fourth wound down, the Clippers ran out of gas. Paul, who at 37 has had many late-game big moments, had 12 points in the fourth, hitting key jumpers from all over the court each time Los Angeles threatened. "I was just happy a few of them fell," said Paul, who shot 5 of 18 for 11 points in Game 3. Paul finished with 19 points on 8-for-17 shooting, nine assists and no turnovers against his former team. Booker had nine rebounds and seven assists. DeAndre Ayton (7'1''-C-1998, college: Arizona) had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Looking ageless at 34 while playing a game-high 44 minutes, Durant scored 11 points in the third, capped by a 3-pointer as the Suns erased an early eight-point deficit. They led 83-78 going into the fourth. "We did a solid job of staying poised," Durant said. "We were just terrible to start the third." The Clippers scored the first nine points of the third and Suns coach Monty Williams called timeout. "Typically you have to list three, four things you have to do," he said. "I don't have to do that with these guys. They understand before I get there." The Suns trailed by 11 points early in the second, when they outscored the Clippers 25-17 and led 48-47 at the break. "It was a back and forth battle," Durant said. "They threw punches, we threw punches. We threw the last one."

Butler scores 30, Heat top Giannis-less Bucks 121-99 - by Eurobasket News
Jimmy Butler (6'7''-G/F-1989, college: Marquette) scored 30 points before leaving with back soreness following a hard fall, and the eighth-seeded Miami Heat beat the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks 121-99 on Saturday night for a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Duncan Robinson (6'8''-F-1994, college: Michigan) scored 20 points on his 29th birthday for Miami, while Kyle Lowry (6'0''-PG-1986, college: Villanova) scored 15 for the Heat. The Bucks were without Giannis Antetokounmpo (6'11''-F-1994, agency: Octagon Europe) for a second consecutive game because of a bruised lower back. Khris Middleton (6'8''-SF-1991, college: Texas A&M) scored 23 points, Jrue Holiday (6'4''-G-1990, college: UCLA) added 19 and Grayson Allen (6'5''-G-1995, college: Duke) scored 14 for Milwaukee. Game 4 is in Miami on Monday night. With the win, the Heat are halfway to what would be a stunner - a No. 8 seed over a No. 1 seed, something that's happened only five times since the NBA went to the 16-team playoff format in 1984. Those who pulled it off: Denver over Seattle 3-2 in 1994, New York over Miami 3-2 in 1999, Golden State over Dallas 4-2 in 2007, Memphis over San Antonio 4-2 in 2011 and Philadelphia over Chicago 4-2 in 2012. Butler got hurt midway through the third quarter after trying a shot near the rim and landing on his back. He stayed in the game briefly, departed for a short stint in the locker room and returned with a large wrap on his back - with the Heat saying he would return. He didn't, because he didn't have to. The game was in hand, and Miami eventually led by as many as 29. Still, it was a somber ending for Miami, first with Butler getting banged up and then with Victor Oladipo (6'4''-G-1992, college: Indiana) - who has spent years dealing with injury issues - leaving late in the fourth quarter after apparently hurting his left knee. Oladipo was expected to play a bigger role for Miami in the postseason after the injury to Tyler Herro (6'5''-SG-2000, college: Kentucky). The first half couldn't have gone better for Miami. Butler had 17 points in the opening quarter, the Heat had a 19-0 run at one point, they set a franchise record by making 12 3s in a half - and it was still only 66-53 at the break. The reason, again: Milwaukee was getting 3s, again. The Bucks made 25 of them in their easy Game 2 win and were 10 for 18 from deep in the first half Saturday. But the Bucks cooled after halftime, shooting only 5 for 21 from 3-point range, and the outcome was never in doubt.

LeBron's Lakers beat Grizzlies 111-101, take 2-1 series lead - by Eurobasket News
LeBron James (6'8''-SF-1984) and the Lakers came out in front of this franchise's first sellout playoff crowd in a decade and immediately produced one of the greatest first quarters in team history. Los Angeles leaped to a 35-9 lead amidst one raucous ovation after another from fans eager for a return to the Lakers' tradition of playoff success. After all those first-quarter fireworks, not even Ja Morant (6'3''-G-1999, college: Murray St.) could carry the Memphis Grizzlies all the way back to prevent the Lakers from seizing Game 3. Anthony Davis (6'10''-C-1993, college: Kentucky) had 31 points and 17 rebounds, James finished with 25 points after Dillon Brooks was ejected for striking him in the groin, and Los Angeles survived Morant's 24-point fourth quarter to beat the Grizzlies 111-101 Saturday night for a 2-1 lead in their first-round playoff series. Rui Hachimura (6'8''-F-1998, college: Gonzaga) scored 16 points in another strong effort off the bench for the seventh-seeded Lakers, who came out impressively in this long-awaited return to a true playoff atmosphere for a franchise with 17 titles. Los Angeles tied an NBA record by taking a 26-point lead into the second quarter, and Memphis couldn't get closer than 13 points until the final two minutes. Brooks was ejected 17 seconds into the second half after the Memphis agitator struck James in the groin while guarding him near midcourt. While the top scorer in NBA history rolled on the court in pain, officials tossed Brooks after a brief video review - and James stood up and led the Lakers to victory. 'I didn't make a statement,' James said. 'I've been doing this too long. I'm not making any statements. We had the opportunity to come home and play well on our home floor, and we did that. No statement was made. We just wanted to play well, and we got a win. I don't need to make statements.' Game 4 is Monday night in Los Angeles. Morant scored 45 points in his return from a one-game absence with a sore right hand, even scoring 22 consecutive points for the Grizz during his stunning fourth quarter while they attempted to rally from an early 29-point deficit. He wore a black brace and padding on his hand and appeared tentative early, but eventually found his usual unguardable form. Morant also had 13 assists and nine rebounds, but second-seeded Memphis couldn't fully recover after the lowest-scoring first quarter in franchise history. 'I think we won by double digits in the last three quarters, so obviously that first quarter pretty much hurt us,' Morant said. ' (I) feel pretty good, man. Obviously some stuff you've just got to play through and tolerate. In that fourth quarter, I was just trying to win the game. Got it going pretty good, making shots, and just couldn't get it over that hump.' With the Lakers' sellout crowd booing his every move, Brooks had just seven points on 3-for-13 shooting before his ejection. He drew the Lakers fans' ire for his behavior during and after Game 2, when the 27-year-old Brooks called the 38-year-old James 'old' and belittled James' abilities. Brooks declined to speak to reporters after the game. Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins only commented tersely on Brooks' ejection: 'Officials made a call.' This rivalry stayed chippy in the third quarter, with Lakers forward Hachimura getting a technical foul for a furious reaction to a foul. Aside from the physical play, the Lakers were in control of Game 3 until the Grizzlies made it mildly interesting late, never getting closer than nine points. 'First quarter, I thought we were playing hard, (but) our offense significantly impacted our defensive ability,' Jenkins said. 'The way our guys fought for quarters 2, 3 and 4 showed a lot of great resiliency. We've got to learn to get better from this. Adversity is going to bring out the best in us.' Desmond Bane scored 18 points for the Grizzlies. Lakers fans ripped into Brooks in pregame warmups and each time he touched the ball before his ejection. More importantly, the Lakers played with a similar edge from the opening tip. The Grizzlies flailed offensively in the first quarter, going 3 for 25 with six turnovers. Brooks was particularly bad, missing 10 of his first 12 shots and making little impact on defense. 'I thought our crowd was phenomenal,' Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. 'Really felt them in the building. Thank God we gave them something to cheer about, the way we came out.'

Young scores 32, Hawks beat Celtics 130-122 to close to 2-1 - by Eurobasket News
Trae Young (6'1''-PG-1998, college: Oklahoma) never lost confidence in himself, even after a run of dismal playoff performances. Finally, he looked like that charismatic point guard who carried the Atlanta Hawks to the Eastern Conference final two years ago. Young scored 32 points in his best playoff game since 2021 and the Atlanta Hawks gave themselves a glimmer of hope, beating the Boston Celtics 130-122 Friday night to close the gap to 2-1 in the opening-round series. Young hit a step-back 3-pointer from the corner with 2:21 left and knocked down another huge basket on a floater in the lane with 45 seconds remaining after Jaylen Brown (6'6''-G/F-1996, college: California) missed a 3-pointer that would've tied it for the Celtics. The seventh-seeded Hawks will try to even the series against the second-seeded Celtics in Game 4 on Sunday night at State Farm Arena. 'I knew I could play like this,' Young said. 'I wasn't worried.' Maybe not, but much of the A-T-L was sure doubting if he was truly a franchise player. Young washed out in an opening-round loss to Miami a year ago, averaging just 15.4 points a game while recording more turnovers (31) than assists (30). He wasn't much better during the first two games in Boston, connecting on 14 of 40 shots. But, working in perfect sync with fellow guard Dejounte Murray (6'4''-G-1996, college: Washington), Young knocked down 12 of 22 attempts, dished out nine assists and grabbed six rebounds, while committing only four turnovers. 'The guards are supposed to be in control of the game,' Young said. 'We consider ourselves two pretty good guards.' They sure played the part in this one. Murray had another big game for the Hawks with 25 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:40 remaining that helped Atlanta protect its lead. He added six rebounds and five assists. 'They were talking to each other, figuring out what the other was thinking and playing off each other,' Hawks coach Quin Snyder said of his starting backcourt. 'At one point, I just told myself to be quiet and let them do it.' The duo was really at its best when it counted most. Young scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and Murray chipped in with 7, accounting for 22 of Atlanta's 30 points in the period. They were the first Hawks teammates to each have at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in a playoff game since Lenny Wilkens and Bill Bridges in 1966, when the franchise still called St. Louis home. Jayson Tatum (6'8''-F/G-1998, college: Duke) scored 29 points to lead Boston, which was barely challenged in the first two games of the series. 'We knew it wasn't to be easy,' said Marcus Smart (6'4''-G-1994, college: OK State), who added 24 points for the Celtics. In Boston, the Celtics pushed out to big leads and cruised to a pair of 13-point victories. In Atlanta, the Hawks finally put up a fight. With Derrick White forced to the bench in the early going with two quick fouls, the Hawks took advantage of a chink in the Boston defense to get things rolling. Atlanta knocked down 30 of 46 shots (65.2%) in the first half. Smart said that's where the Celtics essentially lost the game, allowing the Hawks to gain some much-needed confidence. 'You get that extra boost when you're back home," he said. "We've just got to do a better job of making things tough on them.' Pumped up by a standing-room-only crowd, the Hawks built a 14-point lead - their biggest of the series - late in the first half. But the Celtics responded with eight straight points and went to the locker room down 74-67. It was Atlanta' first victory over Boston this season. The Hawks dropped all three regular-season meetings.

Knicks romp past Cavaliers 99-79, take 2-1 series lead - by Eurobasket News
Back when the NBA playoffs were always part of the springtime schedule at Madison Square Garden, this is what they looked like. Tough to score. Even a little tough to watch. And on Friday night, the fans loved it. Jalen Brunson (6'1''-G-1996, college: Villanova) scored 21 points, RJ Barrett Jr. (6'6''-F/G-2000, college: Duke) broke out of a slump with 19 and the New York Knicks held the Cleveland Cavaliers to the lowest point total in the NBA this season, rolling to a 2-1 lead in the first-round playoff series with a 99-79 victory. The Knicks emphatically bounced back from a loss in Game 2 and moved halfway to their first series victory since 2013. They led by 27 points in the fourth quarter, when a sold-out crowd of 19,812 was so loud there was little chance of hearing much of what the public address announcer was saying - especially as seldom-used veteran Derrick Rose (6'3''-PG-1988, college: Memphis) was checking into the game to a huge ovation. 'It was what I expected for sure,' Knicks All-Star Julius Randle (6'9''-F/C-1994, college: Kentucky) said. 'A lot of, lot of energy and we were able to feed off it, so I love it.' Josh Hart (6'5''-G-1995, college: Villanova) added 13 points for the fifth-seeded Knicks, who host Game 4 on Sunday. They became the first team to allow fewer than 80 points during the regular season or postseason. Donovan Mitchell (6'3''-G-1996, college: Louisville) scored 22 points for the Cavaliers, who never gave themselves a chance with their most inept offensive performance of the season, rattled perhaps by the Knicks on the court and the fans surrounding it. 'Not being able to make shots definitely hurts as well, but it's one of those things where we'll be good,' Mitchell said. 'Like, kind of breathe and relax and calm down.' Darius Garland, who scored 32 points in Game 2, managed just 10 on 4-for-21 shooting. Caris LeVert (6'7''-G-1994, college: Michigan), moved into the starting lineup after scoring 24 in that 107-90 victory, missed all six shots in the first half before coming on late for 17 points. Barrett was 6 for 25 in the first two games but his shot was falling and he aggressively drove to the basket to get himself going. Plus, some of the Cavs' 21 turnovers sent Barrett and the Knicks off to easy transition baskets. It was just the second time the playoffs came to Madison Square Garden in the last 10 years and it looked like something played by the beloved 1990s Knicks, who had the Garden rocking deep in many springs with their rugged brand of basketball. 'As a basketball player you kind of grow up thinking about moments like these,' Barrett said. 'It was electric in there and happy we get to come back Sunday.' Bodies crashed to the floor or into each other, and once in a while the ball went into the basket. The Cavs had 13 baskets and 12 turnovers at halftime, when the Knicks' 4-for-19 shooting from behind the arc looked practically hot compared to the Cavs' 2-for-19 effort. The teams combined to miss 20 of 23 3-pointers in a first quarter that ended tied at 17, and Garland (0 for 8) and Randle (0 for 5) couldn't hit from anywhere. The Cavs' worst previous effort this season was also against the Knicks, 81 points on Dec. 4. 'It was nasty, like a lot of games have been with them this season,' LeVert said. The Knicks ran off six straight points in the second to open a 38-27 lead when Brunson stole the ball from Mitchell and dunked it, then got the final five of the half on a 3-pointer by Immanuel Quickley (6'5''-PG-1999, college: Kentucky) and another dunk off a Mitchell turnover, this one by Barrett, to make it 45-32. The offenses got going in the third quarter, with both teams shooting above 50% and LeVert scoring 11 points. The Cavs got within single digits before the Knicks closed the period on an 8-0 run to take a 72-55 lead. It was a rough first playoff game back home for Mitchell, who was born in Elmsford, New York, not far from where the Knicks practice, and thought he might be a Knick last summer before Utah instead traded him to Cleveland. He said he cut off communication with some friends who were Knicks fans and left some group chats so there would be no distractions. Usually warmly received in the arena, the fans even turned on the All-Star guard, loudly chanting 'airball! airball!' when he was well off on a 3-pointer in the second quarter.

Jokic has triple-double, Nuggets beat T-wolves for 3-0 lead - by Eurobasket News
Nikola Jokic (7'0''-C-1995) and the Denver Nuggets delivered the type of disciplined performance that's a prerequisite for lasting a long time in the NBA playoffs. The Minnesota Timberwolves sure aren't there yet. Jokic had his seventh career triple-double in the playoffs with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists and the Nuggets beat the Timberwolves 120-111 on Friday night to take a 3-0 lead in the first-round series. 'We didn't want to give them life," said Jokic, the two-time reigning NBA MVP who led the league with 29 triple-doubles this season. 'We wanted to be the aggressor. We wanted to punch them first.' Michael Porter Jr. (6'10''-PF-1998, college: Missouri) had 25 points and nine rebounds and Jamal Murray (6'4''-SG-1997, college: Kentucky) added 18 points and nine assists as Denver withstood another dashing game by Minnesota's Anthony Edwards (6'5''-G-2001, college: Georgia) to send a loud crowd of white-shirt-wearing fans home from another frustrating postseason loss. 'Proud of the group," Nuggets coach Mike Malone said. "They handled their business like they're supposed to, like mature teams do.' Edwards scored 36 points to raise his series total to 95, Karl-Anthony Towns (7'0''-F/C-1995, college: Kentucky) had 27 points after totaling only 21 points over the first two games and Rudy Gobert (7'1''-C-1992) had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves, but a defensive lapse here and a rushed 3-pointer there was enough to seal their fate against this Nuggets team finally healthy enough for another run at the NBA finals. 'Our decision-making on offense just kind of let us down,' coach Chris Finch said. Bruce Brown (6'5''-SG-1996, college: Miami, FL) had 12 points to lead Denver's 29-10 edge in bench points, and the Nuggets shot a hard-to-beat 57% from the field. Game 4 is here Sunday. 'No disrespect to the T-wolves, this is about us, but we don't want to go back to Denver,' Malone said. With the Nuggets holding their first 2-0 lead in nine playoff series under Malone, their message from the coach was to keep the throttle on full and not give the underdog Wolves extra confidence. The Western Conference's top team shot like its seeding depended on it and outjumped the Wolves for just about every long rebound. The Nuggets had two 9-0 runs in the first half and started the second quarter by making 12 of their first 16 shots on their way to a 13-point lead. Edwards, who had 41 points in Game 2 for the franchise playoffs record, single-handedly brought the Wolves back with the kind of starburst only players like him are capable of. After a bad pass by Towns was picked off by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (6'5''-G-1993, college: Georgia), Edwards hustled for the block and quickly converted a Euro-step layup on the other end. The Wolves kept up the momentum and cut the lead to 61-55 right before halftime. They were still within six points at the end of the third quarter. The Wolves won their play-in game here a week ago on the backs of Towns and Gobert, the unlikely big-man pairing they created when former Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly bolted for the same job in Minnesota and swung a blockbuster trade for Gobert. The Wolves attacked the basket better than they did in the first two games, and Towns drew Jokic's fourth foul with 5:51 left in the third quarter, but the 7-foot Serb is just too skilled - and too much of a load - to get beat that way. 'The offense looks a little different when 'Joke' isn't out there, but we've been making it work,' Porter said. 'We've just got a lot of dudes who can do a lot of different things.'

Bataan, Bacolod, Iloilo turn back MPBL rivals - by Eurobasket News
The Bataan Risers nipped the Makati OKBet Kings, 68-65, late Saturday, April 22, to get back on track in the OKbet-MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) Fifth Season at the Bataan People's Center in Balanga City. Atoning for an awful performance in the previous outing, James Castro posted 18 points, including the marginal three-point play, as the Risers halted a three-game slide and evened their slate at 3-3 in the elimination round of the 29-team tournament. After Castro, who was held scoreless in Bataan's 60-62 loss to Manila on April 15, completed his 3-point play with still two minutes and 17 seconds to go, Makati bungled its last eight attempts, the last two on treys by Emman Calo, to enable Bataan to avert another collapse. Castro emerged Bataan's lone double-digit scorer apart from grabbing five rebounds, issuing three assists and stealing twice in a 31-minute 44 second stint. The homegrown star was followed by Arvie Bringas with eight points plus nine rebounds and Yves Sazon with eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Jamil Gabawan also delivered with six points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Makati, which dropped to 2-2, got 15 points from Calo and 13 from Rob Celiz. Earlier, Bacolod City of Smiles subdued Manila Stars, 90-86, to also raise its card to 3-3. Bacolod drew 17 points and 11 rebounds from Coy Alves, 16 points and six assists from John Cantimbuhan, 13 points and six rebounds from Domark Matillano, 12 points from James Mangahas and 11 points from Alfred Sedillo. Manila fell to 1-5 despite the 25-point, seven-rebound effort of Adrian Celada and the 16-point, nine-rebound, nine-assist, three-steal output of Marcy Arellano. The Iloilo United Royals, powered by Justine Sanchez's 15 points and 10 rebounds, trounced the Bicol Volcanoes, 109-77, in the opener to climb to 2-4. Iloilo also got 14 points from Toby Ynot, 12 from Neil Tolentino and nine each from Renzo Navarro, who also handed nine assists, Joshua Flores, AJ Madrigal and JR Sumido. Although James Martinez fired 23 points and Wowie Escasio accounted for 19 points and 11 rebounds, Bicol hogged the cellar with its sixth straight defeat. The MPBL goes to the FilOIl Flying V Arena in San Juan on Monday with Sarangani battling Mindoro at 4 p.m., Bacoor tackling Quezon City at 6 p.m. and Caloocan tangling with San Juan at 8 p.m.

Jean Montero claims Spanish Liga Endesa weekly honour - by Eurobasket News
actionPhoto
Liga-Endesa

Talented Dominican Rep. Jean Montero (188-G-2003) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Real Betis and that's him to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 28.
The 19-year old guard had the game-high 30 points adding two rebounds and eight assists for Real Betis in his team's victory, helping them to beat Fuenlabrada (#18, 4-24) 87-77. The game was not the highest importance and did not have significant influence on top of the standings. Real Betis maintains the 17th position in Spanish Liga Endesa. The season is in a full swing, so it's only a dream for the team to make it into top half of the standings. For contrary they may face relegation if the situation turns from bad to worse. Real Betis have already lost 21 games and recorded just seven victories. In the team's last game Montero had a remarkable 70.0% from 2-point range. He turned to be Real Betis' top player in his first season with the team. Jean Montero averages this season 17.1ppg and 4.5apg.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young Canadian guard Kassius Robertson (190-G-1994, agency: Octagon Europe) of Obradoiro. Robertson impressed basketball fans with 44 points and 2 rebounds. Bad luck as Obradoiro lost that game 94-110 to the higher-ranked Baskonia (#2, 23-5). This loss caused Obradoiro to drop to 11th position in the standings. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 12-16 record. Robertson is a newcomer at Obradoiro and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 17.4ppg (#2).

The third best performed player last round was Israeli Max Heidegger (191-G-1997) of second-ranked Baskonia. Heidegger scored 26 points and passed five assists. He was a key player of Baskonia, leading his team to a 110-94 easy win against the lower-ranked Obradoiro (#11, 12-16). Baskonia is closer and closer to top of the standings. They will still need more victories. But 23-5 record is not that bad... Heidegger has a very solid season. In 10 games in Spain he scored 11.7ppg. He also has 4.1apg, FGP: 51.6% and 3PT: 47.7%.

36-year old power forward Walter Sharpe (206-F/C-1986) had a very impressive game in the last round for league's best team Yulon Luxgen and receives a Hoops Agents SBL Player of the Week award for round 25.
He had a double-double of 19 points and 18 rebounds, while his team crushed Taiwan Beer (#3, 10-15) with 17-point margin 75-58. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. It allowed Yulon Luxgen to consolidate first place in the Taiwanese SBL. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Yulon Luxgen has a very solid 17-8 record, but they cannot be too comfortable about keeping top position. Sharpe turned to be Yulon Luxgen's top player in his first season with the team. University of Alabama at Birmingham graduate has very impressive stats this year. Sharpe is in league's top in points (3rd best: 21.4ppg), rebounds (2nd best: 12.6rpg), assists (3rd best: 4.7apg) and averages solid 2.0bpg and 53.0% FGP.

Second best performed player last round was Julian Boyd (203-F-1990) of Changhua. He is American forward in his first season at Changhua. In the last game Boyd recorded impressive double-double of 27 points and 13 rebounds. Bad luck as Changhua lost that game 56-80 to slightly higher-ranked Bank of Taiwan (#2, 15-10). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Changhua still maintains its place in the top 4 of the standings, even despite this loss. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 8-17 record. Boyd is one of the most experienced players at Changhua and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 26.0ppg (#1). His other stats are also decent: 13.6rpg and 3.4apg.

Third place about best performers goes to guard Qi-Min Lu (188-G-1989) of Taiwan Beer (#3). Lu scored 21 points and grabbed seventeen rebounds (!!!). Despite Lu's great performance Taiwan Beer lost 58-75 to #1 ranked Yulon Luxgen. But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. The chances of Taiwan Beer ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 15 games, recording just ten victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Lu could help Taiwan Beer to bring them higher in the standings. Lu has a very solid season. In 2 games in Taiwan he scored 20.0ppg.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Bamba Sarr (200-PF-1997) of Yulon Luxgen - 22 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists
5. Max Mahoney (203-PF-1998) of Bank of Taiwan - 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists
6. Chia-He Chang (188-G-1996) of Bank of Taiwan - 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists
7. Chi-Ying Wu (180-PG-1998) of Yulon Luxgen - 17 points and 3 rebounds
8. You-Hsu Chen (195-F/G-1990) of Bank of Taiwan - 8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists
9. Wei-Chen Chou (191-PF-1996) of Yulon Luxgen - 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Min-Hao Ke (180-G-1992) of Yulon Luxgen - 4 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists

Venezuelan Jesus Cordovez has replaced Argentinian Lucas Zurita as the new head coach of Marinos de Anzoategui, starting his tenure with a defeat at home against Gigantes de Guayana, 76-72, on April 21st, as he'll attempt to turn around a 3-9 start and lead the team to the SPB 2023 playoffs in Venezuela.

Cordovez, with a 30-plus years career, was the first coach to lead Venezuela to a FIBA World Cup back for the 1990 edition in Argentina. Last season he coached Piratas de La Guaira after that franchise decided to let Argentinian Ariel Amarillo go, so it'll be his second straight SPB season coming in the middle of the first round to try and help a team react on time to make it to the next phase.

He even had a stint with Recicladores de Aragua in the brief Serie A (2019).

In the extinct LNB he coached Espartanos de Margarita (2001), Tiburones de Vargas (2003, 2004), Duros de Lara (2005, 2006) and Estudiantes de Guarico (2007, 2009, 2011), while overseas he's worked for teams such as Hormigueros de Bucaramanga in Colombia (2012) or Ostioneros de Guaymas in Mexico (2017-2018).

Lin number one in Taiwan WSBL for round 19 - by Eurobasket News
International Center Tieh Lin (182-C-1999) had a great game in the last round for second-ranked Taiyuan T., receiving a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 19.
The 23-year old player had a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, while her team beat Chunghua T. (#3, 6-13) 77-64. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Taiyuan T. maintains the 2nd position in Taiwanese WSBL. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Taiyuan T. will need more victories to improve their 14-5 record. Lin turned to be Taiyuan T.'s top player in her first season with the team. Tieh Lin has solid league stats. She is league's best scorer averaging so far 16.4ppg and leads league in rebounds with 12.1rpg. Lin is in league's top in assists (2nd best: 1.8apg) and averages impressive 56.1% FGP.

The second best player in last round's games was young Taiwanese swingman Yu-Ting Lin (179-F/G-1994) of league's leader Cathay Life. Lin had a very good evening with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Of course she led Cathay Life to another comfortable win outscoring the lower-ranked Taipower (#4, 2-17) 81-47. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Cathay Life consolidated its place in the very top position of the standings. Her team lost just three games this season, while they won 16 matches. Lin is one of the most experienced players at Cathay Life and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. She belongs to the best scorers in the league with 11.3ppg (#1). She also recorded 4.5 assists per game.

Third on the list of top players last round was international forward Hsiang-Ting Huang (180-F/C-1993) of Chunghua T. (#3). Huang scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Despite Huang's great performance Chunghua T. lost 64-77 to #2 ranked Taiyuan T.. But her team cannot count on just a single player as she also needs help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. The chances of Chunghua T. not to end season at such low position in the league, however are less than slim as they have already lost 13 games, recording just six victories. With bigger assistance of her teammates, Huang could try to bring Chunghua T.'s a little bit higher in the standings. Huang has individually a great season in Taiwan. After 19 games, she made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 13.5ppg (3rd best), rebounds with 6.9rpg (3rd best) and assists with 1.8apg (3rd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Meng-Xin Chen (163-G-1999) of Cathay Life - 10 points, 2 rebounds and 6 assists
5. Ying-Chieh Wu (179-F-1992) of Taiyuan T. - 9 points, 2 rebounds and 8 assists
6. Pei-Chen Tsai (186-C-1984) of Taiyuan T. - 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists
7. Hsiao-Tong Peng (168-G-1998) of Taiyuan T. - 13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists
