Big3 Week 4 Power Rankings - by Eurobasket News |
TIER 1: HAPPY ON TOP Power: Glen Rice Jr. (6'6''-F-1991, college: Georgia Tech) hasn't been the kind of individual force he was last season, when he finished third in the league in total points and averaged 17.5 points per game. This season, Power has featured a more balanced attack, and Rice has averaged just 12.0 per game - Royce White actually leads the league in scoring through Week 4. However, Rice is averaging more assists per game than he did last year, and when Power needs it, Rice can still grab himself a bucket, which he showed when he scored the team's final 9 points in their 54-51 win over the Ball Hogs. Trilogy: Jeremy Pargo (6'2''-PG-1986, college: Gonzaga) is averaging slightly more points per game than 2-time MVP Joe Johnson (6'7''-G-1981, college: Arkansas) and shooting it a bit more efficiently, but Johnson has been getting it done in other areas. Johnson is averaging 10 rebounds per game, the 2nd-best mark in the league, and 3.8 assists per game, which is tied for the third-highest mark in the league. It's going to be very hard to stop Pargo and Johnson if they keep playing like this. By the way, Pargo has made four four-point shots thus far - the rest of the league has made four shots from four-point range combined. Killer 3's: The league's best defensive team just keeps winning. When Donte Greene (6'11''-C-1988, college: Syracuse) looks like a true #1 scoring option, like he has for the past two weeks, everything seems to be in place for Charles Oakley's team. Ghost Ballers: Chris Johnson (6'11''-F/C-1985, college: LSU), who stands at 7 feet tall and is equally capable of dominating the paint and beating teams from the perimeter, is as talented as any player in the league, but he doesn't always look to dominate. That's why Mike Taylor and his ridiculous energy level compliments Johnson's game so well - when Taylor is able to take on the majority of the offensive load, like he did against Tri State, everything gets more comfortable for Johnson and the rest of the talented bigs on the Ghost Ballers roster. TIER 2: JUST OFF THE TOP Ball Hogs: The Ball Hogs really don't deserve to be 2-2 - their two wins were blowouts and their two losses came by final scores of 51-49 and 54-51. Still, wins are wins and losses are losses, and the Ball Hogs really can't afford to lose again if they want to ensure their playoff fate is in their own hands. Trilogy: Trilogy will be faced with a tough choice after Ryan 'Hezi God' Carter's breakout performance in Week 4. If they choose to keep Carter and Isaiah Briscoe (6'3''-PG-1996, college: Kentucky) and team Captain James White (6'7''-F/G-1982, college: Cincinnati) both return, it will mean letting go of David Hawkins (6'5''-G-1982, college: Temple). Hawkins has played sparingly over the past two seasons, but he's been a consistent part of Trilogy during their championship runs, and his veteran leadership has been valuable. Nobody said three-peating was going to be easy. Tri State: Tri State was too reliant on the three last season, and it looks like there's danger of the same thing happening to them this season. The team needs to find a way to establish an interior presence. That could mean getting Deshawn Stephens (G) going or using Jason Richardson as a big man more often, but living on the perimeter seems a bit too risky for this squad. Enemies: Jordan Crawford (6'4''-G-1988, college: Xavier) might be a dark-horse MVP candidate. He's leading the league in scoring, shooting 55% from the field, and an electric 64.7% from three. When you consider how many of his shots are long jumpers off the dribble, that's ludicrous. Of course, he only has four assists through four games, but why pass it off if you can pull up and sink a jumper whenever you want? Bivouac: If a 50-24 loss doesn't make Bivouac realize they need to find more consistent sources of offense, nothing will. TIER 4: IN MAJOR TROUBLE 3's Company: How numbers can mislead you: Michael Beasley is tied with Jordan Crawford for the league lead in scoring, leads the league in rebounds, and leads the league in blocks. However, he's shooting just 39.5% from the floor and 33.3% from three-point range, which isn't acceptable for a player who uses as many of his team's possessions as Beasley does. He needs to sacrifice some volume and focus on efficiency for 3's Company to have a chance of salvaging their season. 3 Headed Monsters: This is looking like a lost season for 3HM, but Brandon Moss emerged as a possible bright spot in Week 4. He instantly established himself as one of the best pure athletes in the league, so we'll see what he can do in the latter half of the season. Aliens: It's time to go back to the drawing board for Aliens. The first step for them should be to find out how to get Dusan Bulut (6'3''-PG-1985) back on his game and start running things through him again - they've been content to play through Janis Timma, but that hasn't gotten them a win yet. Bolivian Libobasquet round 22 best performance: Rolando Vallejos (by Hoops Agents) - by Eurobasket News
The 23-year old player had a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds, while his team crushed La Paz (#10, 5-13) with 20-point margin 110-90. San Simon is placed at 2nd position in Bolivian Libobasquet. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. San Simon will need more victories to improve their 11-7 record. In the team's last game Vallejos had a remarkable 90.0% from 2-point range. He has many years of experience at San Simon, through which he has constantly improved. Rolando Vallejos has solid league stats. He is in league's top in points (2nd best: 25.6ppg), rebounds (3rd best: 11.7rpg), assists (5th best: 4.5apg) and averages impressive 67.4% FGP. The second best player in last round's games was another San Simon's star - young international shooting guard Pedro Gutierrez (182-SG-1996). Gutierrez had a very good evening with 27 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. Of course together with Vallejos he helped San Simon with another comfortable win outscoring the lower-ranked La Paz (#10, 5-13) 110-90. This victory allowed San Simon to move up to second position in the standings. His team's 11-7 record is not bad at all. Gutierrez is one of the most experienced players at San Simon and similarly like Rolando Vallejos has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. Third on the list of top players last round was Argentinian forward Juan Cruz Oberto (200-F/C-1997) of Calero (#7). Oberto scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He was a key player of Calero, leading his team to a 70-65 win against slightly lower-ranked Leones (#8, 7-10). The chances of Calero ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 10 games, recording just eight victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Oberto could help Calero to bring them higher in the standings. Oberto has a very solid season. In 7 games in Bolivia he scored 22.4ppg. He also has 10.6rpg and 1.4bpg. Other top performing players last week: 4. Dariel Maza (C-1991) of La Paz - 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists 5. Irin Stark (185-G-1989) of La Paz - 30 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists 6. Andres Trujillo (184-F-1999) of San Simon - 23 points, 2 rebounds and 6 assists 7. Claudio Gonzales (193-SF-2004) of La Paz - 27 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists 8. Adriano Barreras (186-G-1989) of Atletico Nacional - 19 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists 9. Martin Ochoa (185-PG-1994) of Leones - 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists 10. Carlos Gonzales (2002) of Atletico Nacional - 16 points and 8 rebounds The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

NBL Round 7 of Regular Season - by Eurobasket News

A Mismatch Nightmare And Leadership Qualities Is Something That David Muenkat Should Enrich The Fraport Skyliners With - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber |
The last 2 seasons have been nothing to brag about for the Fraport Skyliners as they begin a new chapter in their history in the second division Pro A. They began the transfer period this summer wanting to rely on college rookies as Aiden Warnholtz, Cameron Henry and David Muenkat (201-F-2000, college: St.Francis X.) were all reeled in. 2 in the lot are guards and the third a power forward that averaged big man stats as a senior. This young man is David Muenkat. When you look back the last years, the Fraport Skyliners last had a dominant big man with Johannes Voigtmann who turned down an NBA gig with Washington and has been an Euroleague player since he left Frankfurt in 2016. But at 201cm, can you classify Muenkat as a big man? He is actually a power forward that put up double double stats in college, but lot more than that and could be another special gem that head coach Denis Wucherer some how found through his detailed world wide network. Like Warnholtz, he has had the opportunity to get pro experience the last 2 summers in the Canadian CEBL. He is a player doing all he can do be as versatile as possible, the same as Warnholtz. If there is anyone who can give his best 2 cents about his play, then it is current St. Francis Xavier University head coach Tyrell Vernon. Even if I only heard his voice, but when I asked him what the first thing that he thinks of when he hears the name David Muenkat, I could imagine a massive smile pop on his face. 'He is an overall mismatch nightmare. He may not have the experience or total skill set yet, but if you put him on the floor, he will be a mismatch problem and he is still developing', said Tyrell Vernon proudly. A mismatch problem and leadership qualities are something that David Muenkat should enrich the Fraport Skyliners with. David Muenkat was born on July 2,2000 in Brampton Ontario. He received his first basketball instruction at CIA Bounce playing AAU basketball. He also got early basketball experience playing at the Rise Center averaging 10,0ppg and 9,0rpg. He then played 2 seasons at Trinidad State Junior College where he played 58 games and made 46 starts. In his 2 seasons there he averaged 10,4ppg and 7,7rpg and shot a solid 55,3% from the field. He then was rewarded getting a NCAA gig with St. Francis College (NY) (NCAA). But like for so many people in this time, the season was affected by Covid. He only played 19 games averaging 5.9ppg, 4.2rpg, FGP: 48.9%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 60.0%. He scored in double figures in 4 games including a potent 21/11 game against LIU Brooklyn. He made one more change of scenery going back to Canada and playing 2 seasons with St. Francis Xavier University (U Sports). It was here where his career took off and where the successful working relationship began with head coach Tyrell Vernon. He was a double double monster in his 2 years and there is one major asset that could turn the German Pro A upside down. 'He is extremely unique and is a high IQ guy. He is a finisher but continues to work on his three. He can cover many positions and has great foot speed. I see him being in the top 2%-3% in terms of athleticism and what his body can do', warned Tyrell Vernon. The big question is can he continue to bring his game to a new level by incorporating a stable three point shot? In his last 3 seasons in school he only attempted 32 three's making 10. 'I feel like he always had a good form, but he simply never was in a situation to gain confidence. He is getting better, but there is a lot of progress still to be made, but he is making strides', warned Tyrell Vernon. With the Fraport Skyliners he will be able to keep making progress under the guidance of assistant coach Klaus Perwas. Sometimes young players are still raw and have certain abilities off the radar, but with Muenkat, it's all about grinding in the gym. 'He doesn't really have a hidden strength. He plays with extreme force, but when his game gets more polished, he will be very hard to stop on offense', stressed Tyrell Vernon. In his 2 years at St Francis Xavier University he played a total of 40 games. In his junior season he averaged 13.1ppg, Reb-3 (10.2rpg), 1.2apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 49.2%, 3PT: 40.0%, FT: 60.0% and in his senior year, he stepped up his scoring further averaging 16.3ppg, 10.4rpg, 1.4apg, 1.3spg, FGP: 50.8%, 3PT: 26.3%, FT: 63.7%. He had 17 double doubles and some real explosive monster games against Arcadia posting 25/18 stats, had 27 points against Queen's and a 13/21 outing against Dalhousie. In his last college game, he led all scorers with 31 points and 11 boards, but new teammate Aiden Warnholtz had the last laugh having 23 points and 11 dimes and winning the U title. He can obviously dominate the paint on offense, but what kind of a defender is he? 'At the moment, he is a solid defender. He has the ability switch 1-5. When he becomes more seasoned he will be able to demand all 5', expressed Tyrell Vernon. He made big strides in his senior year, but not only on offense, but also through his leadership. 'He found his voice. In his first year he found his athleticism and played away from the basket, but in his second year he led the team to wins. He isn't shy. He will be the voice in the locker room. He is socially prepared for what is to come', commented Tyrell Vernon. Like many Canadians that turn professional, he has been able to get added pro experience in the CEBL where he played 2 seasons with the Scarborough Shooting Stars averaging 5.3ppg, 3.5rpg, FGP: 52.4%, 3PT-2 (50.0%), FT: 58.1%. He scored in double figures 3 times and had a solid 18/8 game against Hamilton. This summer he upped his game averaging 8,2ppg and 5,9rpg and scored in double figures in 4 games including netting 21 points against Niagara and scooped down 14 rebounds including 7 offensive rebounds against Montreal. Having this added experience in the CEBL will be vital for him adjusting easier and quicker to the Pro A. 'He continues to work on his catch and shooting. On defense he has all the physical tools. Now it's all about being a step ahead of everyone else and knowing where everyone has to be', added Tyrell Vernon. It is obvious that when you have such a special player like David Muenkat, your going to have very fond memories in the 2 year working relationship. There wasn't a single game he could pick out that he will remember the most, but moreover the whole time. 'The biggest story with David is the enormous jump he made after coming from the NCAA. He is a totally different player and person to 2 years ago. 2 years ago he was undersized and now is a player that can do so much more. He made such a huge transformation in a short time, but he still has so much room to grow', warned Tyrell Vernon. Of course Tyrell Vernon also had a special experience with him off the court. 'We were close. He was very personal. He is one of those guys that will talk to you. I remember at the start of the season, we were at a team dinner. I told the guys, in order for us to have success, I have to coach you hard. Some guys can't come to terms with that, but David said with no hesitation that he would do what was needed, because he wanted to be the best. And if that meant getting on him, it wasn't a problem. His main focus is always winning and getting better', stressed Tyrell Vernon. Leadership and that kind of diehard focus is something the Fraport Skyliners will dearly need in the 2023-2024 season. The first 3 imports may all be rookies. The more leadership they have the better. Who can't say a rookie like David Muenkat can't be a leader as a rookie? This team is on a mission and don't want to solidify a spot in the Pro A as a regular team, but return back to where they came from. They will need all the added help possible even from rookies. |
A Little Love From Overseas For Lebron James From Tyler Brevard - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber |
Tyler Brevard (189-G-1998, college: Lander)s a 25 year old 189cm guard from West Columbia, South Carolina that played his second professional season and first with TuS 59 HammStars (Germany-Regionalliga). Last season as a rookie he played with BG Dorsten averaging 24.5ppg, 8.1rpg, 4.3apg, 1.8spg, FGP: 51.5%, 3PT: 36.8%, FT: 72.7%. He began his basketball career at Gray Collegiate Academy. He then played two years at Spartanburg Methodist College (JUCO) averaging 4.3ppg, 1.2rpg, 1.1apg and in his second year averaged 5.7ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.6apg, FGP: 48.2%, 3PT: 41.2%, FT: 75.0%. He played his junior year at Erskine College (NCAA2) averaging 13.4ppg, 4.0rpg, 3.9apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 49.4%, 3PT: 42.1%, FT: 80.3% an dplayed his senior year at Lander University (NCAA2) averaging 12.0ppg, 3.6rpg, 2.5apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 53.1%, 3PT: 43.2%, FT: 70.5%. He spoke to eurobasket about Lebron James becoming the NBA all-time leading scorer. Lebron James has beaten Kareem Abdul Jabbar's NBA all-time scoring record. Did you stay up to watch history? No, I wasn't able to stay up and watch. Hate I missed that. How does one put this record into perspective best? It stood almost 40 years? That was years of consistency on LeBron's end! There have many great scorers, but to do what he's done year-after-year is amazing. He scored 38 points in 26 minutes. Was it another normal day at the office? Basically, but there was definitely some added motivation involved haha. How much is that ball going to be worth? It'll be worth millions easily. Russell Westbrook made the pass. Do you think that in 20 years the pass could be remembered more than his triple doubles? No way!! His record breaking basket was a step back over Kenrich Williams. Is that the kind of shot you expected knowing the kind of player he is? Or would you have expected a dunk for the spectacular finish? Yea I figured it would be a fadeaway or his signature side step three pointer. There obviously is a lot of respect for Kareem, by the basketball world, but what would have happened on social media if Lebron had gotten the record with a sky hook shot? I think it would have been a frenzy all over social media if that happened. That would have made it more surreal. Kareem is such a gentleman. You didn't grow up with him, but what does his legacy mean to younger guys? Can they even understand what that guy did? Kareem changed the game and did it his way. He showed it was possible to be well educated and calm while facing conflicts, but also dominating on the court through the face of it all. Of course I wasn't alive while he played, but his impact is still felt for sure. Lebron will have more than 40,000 points when it's all over. Back in 1984 people said it would never be broken? Will this record be broken? I think it's possible, especially with how effortless players are scoring now. It would take someone to be as healthy as LeBron and that's the only thing I have doubts about haha. If Luka Doncic continues to play to 40 stays fit and becomes a physical specimen like Lebron, could he dethrone him? 100%, but Luka looks more forward to offseason and enjoying the farm life in the future rather than breaking that record. Does this record finally give Lebron the GOAT status over Michael Jordan? I feel that he passed Jordan, this just gives another reason why now. What is your favorite Lebron moment that you witnessed live or on TV? Watching 'The Decision'. When he chose Miami, I went and grabbed powder to do his pregame ritual. I was beyond happy he was joining forces with my favorite player, Dwyane Wade. Thanks Tyler for the chat. |

The Thunder are waiving forward Rudy Gay (6'8''-F/G-1986, college: UConn), sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic. Gay, who turns 37 next month, has been traded twice this offseason. The Jazz sent him to Atlanta in the John Collins deal, and then the Hawks moved him to Oklahoma City in a salary dump. As Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman tweets, releasing Gay will open up a roster spot, which the Thunder will use to officially sign Jack White. The two sides agreed to the terms of a contract on July 1, but OKC made some trades to add draft assets, temporarily putting the deal on hold. Gay has had a long and highly productive NBA career, often popping up on lists of the best players to have never been an All-Star. He averaged at least 17 points and 5 rebounds in 10 consecutive seasons from 2007-2017 with the Grizzlies, Raptors and Kings. While the 17-year veteran was still a solid performer as recently as 2020/21 with the Spurs, he battled injuries over his two seasons with the Jazz, appearing in just 111 of a possible 164 regular season games. His production slipped as well, with Gay posting career lows in virtually every major statistic over the past two campaigns. Overall, Gay has appeared in 1120 regular season contests, including 779 starts, with career averages of 15.8 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.1 SPG and 0.7 BPG on .452/.346/.799 shooting in 30.9 MPG. In '22/23, he averaged just 5.2 PPG and 2.9 RPG on .380/.254/.857 shooting in 56 games (14.6 MPG). Gay is virtually certain to go unclaimed on the waiver wire, as he'll earn a guaranteed $6,479,000 in '23/24, which is the final year of his contract. The Thunder will be on the hook for that full amount in a couple days if he isn't claimed, while the former UConn star will become an unrestricted free agent. Anthony Slater of The Athletic previously identified the Warriors as a team that might be interested in Gay if he were to hit the open market. Courtesy of: hoopsrumors.com |
Assistant Coach Bryan Gates To Join Sixers, Not Mavs - by Eurobasket News |
After working on the Suns' staff under Monty Williams for the past two seasons, veteran assistant coach Bryan Gates appeared poised to leave Phoenix for a job in Dallas this offseason. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported early in July that Gates had agreed to join Jason Kidd's staff. However, according to Wojnarowski, Gates won't be a part of the Mavericks' coaching staff after all. Instead, he'll be hired by the Sixers as an assistant under new head coach Nick Nurse. The Mavericks have yet to officially announce their coaching staff changes for the 2023/24 season, so it's unclear whether Gates actually completed any formal paperwork or just had a verbal agreement with the club. Either way, the Mavs agreed to free up Gates for a new opportunity in Philadelphia, according to Wojnarowski, who says Gates will have a 'significant step up' in role with the Sixers. Gates began his coaching career way back in 1997 with the Idaho Stampede, a then-D League team. He bounced around a few more non-NBA leagues and earned D League Coach of the Year honors in 2007 and 2008 before catching on with the Kings as an assistant in 2009. He has since held similar roles in New Orleans, Minnesota (twice), Sacramento (again), and Phoenix. It's unclear if the Mavericks will head back to the coaching market in search of another assistant who could fill the role they envisioned for Gates, or if they'll be satisfied to stick with their current group. As for the Sixers, they're still filling out their new-look staff under Nurse. Bobby Jackson, Rico Hines, and Doug West are among the other assistants reported to be joining the team. TBL Round 7: Tigers lose their first game against T-REX - by Eurobasket News
There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in TBL. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market. The most surprising game was the first loss of Tigers (6-1) in Nakhon Ratchasima on Tuesday night. Visitors were defeated by sixth ranked T-REX (4-3) 91-83. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Tigers. T-REX looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. It was a great evening for American Tevis Robinson (198-1995, college: JWU, FL) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds. His fellow American import point guard Avery Scharer (185-1986, college: Shoreline CC) helped adding 22 points, 17 rebounds, 14 assists and 7 steals. At the losing side Nattapat Biasumrit responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tigers' coach Chakrapan Chuithaisong rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. T-REX moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Devil Rays and Pythons. Tigers at the other side still keep top position with one game lost. T-REX is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Kings (#10) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Tigers will play against Mammoth (#9) and are hoping to win this game. Very significant was SWU's (#3) 84-73 road victory against 5th ranked Devil Rays. Pryimak number one in Thailand TBL for round 7 (by Hoops Agents) - by Eurobasket News
The 27-year old player had a double-double of 25 points and 21 rebounds, while his team beat Devil Rays (#5, 4-3) 84-73. SWU maintains the 3rd position in Thailand TBL. They would have been even better if they did not have these two lost games earlier in Regular Season. SWU will need more victories to improve their 5-2 record. In the team's last game Pryimak had a remarkable 52.9% from 2-point range. He has many years of experience at SWU, through which he has constantly improved. Sergii Pryimak has solid league stats. He is in league's top in rebounds (4th best: 15.6rpg) and averages impressive 1.7bpg and 60.0% FGP. The second best player in last round's games was young American Avery Scharer (185-PG-1986) of T-REX. Scharer had a very good evening with a triple-double of 22 points, 17 rebounds and 14 assists. Of course T-REX cruised to a 91-83 relatively comfortable win over the higher-ranked Tigers (#1, 6-1). T-REX's 6th position in the standings has not changed. His team lost some distance to top teams. But 4-3 record is not bad and everything may still change. Scharer is one of the most experienced players at T-REX and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 25.6ppg (#5). His other stats are also decent: 9.7rpg and 11.7apg. Former Shoreline Community College star Scharer is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Third on the list of top players last round was another T-REX's star - American forward Tevis Robinson (198-PF-1995). Robinson got into 30-points club by scoring 38 points in the last round. He went also for eighteen rebounds . He was another key player of T-REX, helping his team with a 91-83 win against the higher-ranked Tigers (#1, 6-1). T-REX needs these victories very badly if they think about getting closer to top teams. Their record at this point is 4 victories and 3 lost games. Robinson has a great season in Thailand. After only 7 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 23.7ppg (7th best). Robinson attended one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball. Other top performing players last week: 4. James Martinez (170-PG-1987) of Wave - 35 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists 5. Vladislav Ungurian (190-G-1995) of SWU - 29 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists 6. Adrain Calada) of Kings - 33 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists 7. Sarion McGee (203-F) of Pythons - 21 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.

Magical McGill Marcs The Way - by Jeff King |
Rickey McGill (188-G-1997, college: Iona) 's hotly anticipated return to British basketball will help Serioes Group Newcastle Eagles double down on the franchise's identity as defensive disruptors. That's the verdict of an excited Marc Steutel after the Eagles playcaller confirmed Plymouth's former playmaker is Tyneside-bound. McGill is lighting up New Zealand's National Basketball League (NBL) after leading the Franklin Bulls to a fourth-placed finish and this season's playoffs. And after an injury-hit 2022, the US star has successfully kickstarted a career that's already taken him to Greece, Estonia and Hungary. McGill brings his BBL experience to Newcastle's 2023-24 roster after a season at Plymouth alongside his now Eagles teammate Will Neighbour. 'If you look at Rickey's regular season stats in New Zealand, he led the league in steals and I think that shows a little bit about how dynamic he is,' said Steutel. 'He's an explosive guard who's able to get to his spots. Rickey can playmake, create shots, finish and make the right decisions whether he's playing on or off the ball. 'Defensively he's somebody who's really disruptive and someone who puts aggressive pressure on the ball. In that respect Rickey is a player who will continue to help build our identity as a team and ensure that we're playing the brand of Eagles' basketball that I want to play.' McGill heads into the New Zealand top-flight's post-season first in steals and fifth in assists. At Division One Iona, McGill became the first player in MACC conference history to appear in the NCAA tournament four seasons on the bounce. That record secured a rookie professional contract with Athens-based Panionios where the 6ft 2in star averaged seven points and three assists per game prior to the Greek top flight's 2020 Covid shutdown. Months later McGill burst onto the British scene with Plymouth before stints with Rapla KK (Estonia) and Soprini KC (Hungary) reinforced his reputation as one of European basketball's rising stars. A serious injury in January 2022 led to an enforced spell on the sidelines but the 26-year-old has rediscovered his fitness and form under US coach Daniel Sokolovsky at the Bulls. 'I'm delighted with how the roster's shaping up this summer,' added Steutel. 'Rickey's another impressive addition who's proven in the British Basketball League and proven in Europe. He's somebody who has really high talent and the ability to change a game and to change the outcome of a game. Everyone at Newcastle is delighted that he'll be suiting up for the Eagles this season.' The American guard played in the BBL's behind-closed-doors season taking Plymouth to the May Madness Play-Offs Semi-Finals. McGill joined Franklin in March and heads into the post-season first in steals (2.5 per game) and fifth in assists (5.2 per game). The NBL wraps next month with Steutel's latest signing due on Tyneside in time for Newcastle's pre-season programme. McGill joins Larry Austin Jr in a new-look Eagles' backcourt and becomes the franchise's sixth signing of the summer. |

Barkley number one in Vietnam VBA for round 14 (by Hoops Agents) - by Eurobasket News
The 27-year old player had a double-double of 41 points and 16 rebounds, while his team edged out Dolphins (#3, 6-3) 94-90. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. It allowed Saigon Heat to consolidate first place in the Vietnamese VBA. Saigon Heat have a solid 8-1 record. In the team's last game Barkley had a remarkable 60.9% from 2-point range. He has many years of experience at Saigon Heat, through which he has constantly improved. Former East Carolina University star has very solid stats this year. Barkley is league's best scorer averaging so far 30.7ppg and leads league in rebounds with 19.6rpg. Barkley is in league's top in assists (2nd best: 7.6apg) and averages impressive 64.1% FGP. The second best player in last round's games was young American John Fields (205-F/C-1988, agency: Octagon Europe) of Warriors. Fields had a very good evening with a double-double of 30 points and 16 rebounds. Bad luck as Warriors was edged by slightly higher-ranked Buffaloes (#2, 7-2) 82-78. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Warriors still maintains its place in the top 4 of the standings, even despite this loss. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 4-5 record. Fields is one of the most experienced players at Warriors and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 23.8ppg (#6). His other stats are also decent: 16.9rpg and 3.2apg. Third on the list of top players last round was American center DeAngelo Hamilton (203-C-1990) of Catfish (#6). Hamilton showcased his all-around game by recording 26 points, sixteen rebounds (!!!) and four assists in the last round. Despite Hamilton's great performance Catfish lost 81-86 to slightly higher-ranked City Wings (#5, 3-5). But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates. Catfish can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have rather bad season and 2-6 record places them close to the bottom of the standings. Hamilton has individually a great season in Vietnam. After only 8 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 13.9rpg (6th best). He also has 2.4bpg and FGP: 52.4%. Other top performing players last week: 4. Jeremy Smith (190-G-1991) of City Wings - 34 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists 5. Yevgen Sakhniuk (201-F-1995) of City Wings - 22 points, 27 rebounds and 3 assists 6. Madarious Gibbs (185-G-1993) of Dolphins - 24 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists 7. Anthony January (204-PF-1993) of Buffaloes - 29 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists 8. Robert Sampson (203-F-1992) of Dolphins - 22 points and 12 rebounds 9. Udun Osakue (198-F-1992) of Buffaloes - 15 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists 10. Brachon Griffin (185-G-1992) of Catfish - 23 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
