Manama breeze into semi-finals - by Eurobasket News |
Manama stormed into the semi-finals after Mustafa Husain, Travin Thibodeaux (203-F-1996, college: New Orleans) and Sir'Dominic Pointer (198-G/F-1992, college: St.John's) combined to consign Beirut First Club to an 86-75 defeat last night in their second Group A game of the FIBA WASL Final 8 series at the Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Sports Hall in Dubai. Husain scored 16 points to go with three rebounds and five assists, Thibodeaux tallied 15 points along with six rebounds and two assists and Pointer netted 14 points with eight rebounds and two assists as Manama galloped to a 50-38 lead at half-time and led 66-58 when the fourth and last quarter began. With five minutes remaining, Manama had increased their lead to 10 points at 76-66 and, when the game entered its last two minutes, seemed assured of victory as they led 82-69. Fittingly, with just three seconds left till the final buzzer, it was Husain who scored the last two points for Manama to take the final score to 86-75 and seal a dominant win. This was a must-win game for both teams, after Manama lost their first game, 112-84, to group leaders Al Riyadi, the FIBA WASL West Asia champions Al Riyadi, from Lebanon, last Saturday and Beirut Club were also hammered, 106-91, by their Lebanese compatriots two days ago. This meant that Al Riyadi sailed through to the semi-finals after topping the Group A table with four points leaving Manama, the FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL)-Gulf Region runners-up, to battle it out with FIBA WASL West Asia runners-up Beirut Club for the remaining semi-final slot from their group. Having placed second in their group with three points, Manama will now take on Group B toppers BC Astana, from Kazakhstan, in the first semi-final tomorrow while Al Riyadi will face Kuwait Club in the second. Seven teams, including the top three sides each from the FIBA WASL West Asia and WASL-Gulf leagues plus the top teams from South and Central Asia, have taken part in the competition which began last Friday with the opening game of the tournament between Kazakhstan's BC Astana and Shabab Al Ahli from Dubai. Chennai Heat, the 2023 Indian National Basketball League (INBL) champions, were supposed to be the eighth team in the tournament but they pulled out of the tournament last week, leaving just three teams, including Manama, in Group A. Group B featured Kuwait Club, Shabab Al Ahli, Iran's Gorgan and BC Astana. Whichever two teams make it to the final will automatically qualify for the FIBA Champions Cup which provides the pathway to the international basketball body's leading club competition - the Intercontinental Cup. The 25-year old center had the game-high 15 points adding seven rebounds for Niagara in his team's victory, helping them to beat Montreal (#10, 2-5) 100-93. Niagara is placed at 7th position in CEBL. Ekiyor just recently signed at Niagara, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Eddie Ekiyor averages this season 13.6ppg and 5.6rpg. The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young American guard Treveon Graham (198-G-1993) of Montreal. Graham impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds. Bad luck as Montreal lost that game 72-104 to slightly higher-ranked Scarborough (#9, 2-4). The game was between two teams which are definitely not main contenders for the title. Montreal dropped in the standings to very bottom position. 5 lost games are too many comparing to just two victories Montreal managed to get this year. Graham is one of the most experienced players at Montreal and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. The third best performed player last round was another Montreal's star - American Ahmed Hill (196-SG-1995). Hill scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Wolves Season Ends With Playoff Loss To Capitals in OT - by Eurobasket News |
The Wolves suffered a disappointing and season-ending loss to the NC Capitals in the second round of the 2023 ECBL Playoffs, coming in as the #1 seed and the regular season champions of the Northern Conference. The Wolves, who have relied this season on strong outside shooting and creating turnovers and fast break opportunities with defensive perimeter play, were inconsistent in the first quarter from deep and struggled to gain traction as the Capitals moved the ball inside and were able to get quality looks from both the interior and midrange. At the end of the first quarter, the Wolves trailed 26-24. The second quarter saw more of the same, as the Wolves kept the game close but still couldn't find their outside shooting touch as consistently as they normally had throughout the season. Big shots from Mike Hughes (6'3''-G-1996, college: Georgia South) and Calique Jones (6'0''-PG, college: Bethany, WV) helped cut the lead to a manageable distance, but the Wolves still trailed at the half, 54-48. The third quarter saw a resurgence of the perimeter defense and high octane offense that has been the Wolves calling card this year - the Wolves finally managed to take the lead after multiple defensive stops and then capitalizing with points. However, sloppy turnovers by the team allowed the Capitals to recover, and the game was tied at the end of the 3rd quarter 78-78. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle for the lead, but in the final minute, the Wolves season seemed to near the end as the Capitals built a 3 score lead. The Wolves created defensive turnovers and scores in under a minute to cut the lead to one, then fouled to put the Capitals on the free throw line, where they sank both shots. With 3.4 seconds on the clock, Wolves guard Mike Hughes drove to the top of the key, faked, then drained a three to send the game into overtime, and extended the Wolves season into another period. The overtime period, wasn't kind to the Wolves as their shooting - both from deep and from the free throw line - went cold. The team went several minutes without scoring and the Capitals were able to consistently get enough buckets to extend a lead the Wolves couldn't overcome, and as the buzzer sounded, the Capitals took the win 120-111 and moved on the Northern Conference championship game. The Wolves finished 9-4 on the season, winning the Northern Conference regular season and having made their third playoff appearance in four seasons. Next up for the Wolves are summer tournaments and workouts, and the roster generally shifts based on the events, player availability and coaching decisions. Courtesy of: ECBL |

Patrick Flomo Will Always Remember The 2008-2009 Telekom Baskets Bonn Team Always Wanting To Battle And Do It Together - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber |
Patrick Flomo (203-F-1980, college: Ohio) is a former professional player that enjoyed a 17 year pro career. After finishing at Ohio University (NCAA), he came overseas and played his rookie season in Finland with Korihait Uusikaupunki and in his second season played with the Eiffel Towers Nijmegen (Holland-Eredivisie). In 2005 he came to Germany and played with Herten (Regionalliga) and would never leave Germany again. He played with clubs like Duesseldorf, Ludwigsburg, Crailsheim and Essen. But he celebrated his biggest success with the Telekom Baskets Bonn where he played 5 seasons. He would play parts of 8 seasons in the easyCredit BBL and played a total of 254 BBL games. 14 years ago, he helped the Telekom Baskets Bonn reach the BBL final. He looked back on his career and the 2008-2009 season. Thanks Patrick for talking to eurobasket.com. You retired in 2019. You coached the Artland Dragons and also in the youth sector. What are you doing presently? At the moment I am living in Quakenbrueck coahing the Artland Dragons. I have to say basketball life has for the most part been pretty good to me and continues to do so today. How much of a joy has it been watching your son Jelani grow as a player with the Young Rasta Dragons? What would you like to believe did he get from your game? I would be happy with anything my son chooses to do with his life but I am happy that he shares the same love for basketball that I do. Watching him grow and develop his game along with handling the many challenges that come with it has been great and I am so proud of the player and young man he is becoming. He plays a completely different position but has shown talent on the defensive side of the ball, so if he inherited anything from me it would be that. You played 17 seasons which most guys can't say they did. You played most of the time in Germany. What will you always remember from Germany the country and it's basketball? As far as Germany itself, the cold will never be any one thing that I find memorable. In the different places I played I met so many good people, ate a lot of delicious food and even learned other ways of speaking German. I will say that Germany does have the best beer I have tasted. Coming to Germany was the beginning of the great life that I have now. I met my wife, who helped shape the man I am today and gave me the beautiful family I have. This basketball life isn't always easy and having a partner to support you in the ups and downs, is immeasurable. You played 5 years with the Telekom Baskets Bonn. How special was this organization in your pro career? My time in Bonn will forever be some of my most memorable. I played and worked with some great people. The support given to players by the club but especially by the fans is something to be modeled on in professional sports. How would the 2009 team had faired against the 2022-2023 Telekom Baskets Bonn? Would the team have won without having to play against TJ Shorts? Basketball has evolved and changed so much in that time, it's hard to say how that matchup would go. I do know it would be a battle. You played 3 years for Tuomas Iisalo in Crailsheim. If someone had told you in 2017 that this coach would become the best in Germany in 5 years what would you have thought? Without question. In my opinion, the passion, focus & effort he puts into mastering his craft is the reason he has had the success he now has. He is a true scholar of the game and is constantly looking to improve himself. You played for many eccentric coaches including Murat Didin. What is your most unforgettable experience with him? A lot happened in my two seasons in Dusseldorf. The thing I will never forget is having a meeting with Coach Didin in a coffee shop at the airport. He traveled back and forth to Istanbul a lot. I still laugh today when I think about the asking me to meet him there like it was completely normal. The game has really changed. How do you think would your career have gone now? The game is dominated by three's and the bigs are all so versatile now? NO way of knowing what kind of career I would have in today's game, but I do know that I would have played with the same passion that I did in my time. You helped the Telekom Baskets Bonn reach the final in 2009. Bonn is back in the final for the first team as they had an incredible season. Do you still follow your ex-team? Of course, and I am so happy & proud of the success the club is having now. The 2008-2009 Bonn was a special team that finished the regular season in fourth place. What do you remember being this team's biggest strength? That we had guys that wanted to battle and do it together every time we stepped on the court. The team had 2 ex NBA players with Ken Johnson and Vincent Yarbrough and a third player by the name of Brandon Bowman who I felt should always have made it. How important was his play for the success of the team? Bowman was one of the players that was ahead of his time. He was a forward with guard skills much like many bigs today. The variability he showed on both ends of the floor made him a big part of our success that season. How will you remember John Bowler most? He was an unorthodox player that also had a original character and humor. JB had a lot of character and was one of the funniest guys I played with in my career. But I remember his competitive spirit most. What memories will you always have of EJ Rowland? The guy just completed his 18th season at age 40. I guess his wheels never fell off. EJ's playing that long didn't surprise me one bit. He had a clear vision and goal for his career and worked on his game daily. Bonn began the playoffs by sweeping Ulm. Could the series have changed for the worse had Bonn not won game 2 71-69? That was a big win for us, and anything is possible in the playoffs. Ulm had some really good players and played good basketball then. Is Jeff Gibbs one of those guys that you will never forget playing against? How does a 22-centimeter advantage that Ken Johnson still give a big man problems? Was he one of the greatest undersized bigs you ever saw? I've known Jeff since we played AAU ball together for All Ohio Red back in Columbus, Ohio. His football background, and the fact that he had a 7+ foot wingspan with a 40inch vertical, made him a tough matchup for anyone. The Alba Berlin series was crazy. Bonn won the first 2 games combined by 5 points and looked like the final was an easy bet, but then they strapped up the defense and allowed Bonn to average 40 points in the next 2 games. What did they change up? Much like today Berlin was one of the tops teams in the BBL and were the favorites in that series. They simply turned up their defensive pressure and broke up our rhythm on offense. Then came the crazy final against Oldenburg. Bonn was always up a game, but Oldenburg always fought back. Was the 71-70 loss in game 5 your toughest loss in your career? Talk a little about the last seconds. How do you remember witnessing them? By far. After beating Alba in the semis, we had a lot of confidence in the finals. That last game was tough because until the last 43 seconds of the game I was confident in our win and becoming German champions. What was the difference in the series? Could Bonn had won the series keeping Ricky Paulding better in check? When you think back on that season, what will you always remember as being your fondest moment on the court? Ricky was a great player and his game 4 performance in Bonn was something special. Slowing him down surely would have helped but you can never truly be certain of victory in this game. One of the fondest memories of that season was beating Alba because we did something together that very few thought was possible. What made it so special to play for Michael Koch? He was a player's coach. You did show in Ludwigsburg that you could function under other coaches? Playing for Mike was special because he did understand and could relate with what we experienced as players. It also helped because anything he asked us to do we knew he did himself. Please name your starting 5 of favorite Bonn teammates? I could never name just 5. I care about and respect all the guys I battled with in Bonn. Who won a 1-1 you or Moussa Diagne? The competitor in me would like to say I would win but Moussa was a special player and probably had the advantage. Who do you remember being the toughest forward that you battled in Germany? So many to name, but I will say that Derrick Allen was always a tough matchup The Telekom Baskets Bonn are down 2-1 in the best of 5 series against Ulm. What is your prediction? The Baskets have shown many times this season that they possess the ability to find ways to win. I predict an interesting game 4. Thanks Pat for the chat. |

Mark Williams Has Thumb Surgery - by Eurobasket News |
Mark Williams (7'0''-C-2001, college: Duke) underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, the Hornets announced in a press release. The rookie center is expected to make a full recovery, according to the team, although no specific timetable was given. The 15th pick in last year's draft, Williams appeared in 43 games and made 17 starts this season. He finished second among rookies with 1.0 blocks per game, third in field goal percentage at 63.7%, fourth in rebounds at 7.1 per night and fifth with 11 double-doubles. He also averaged 9.0 PPG in 19.3 minutes per game. Williams missed some time with a sprained thumb in March, but he was able to return before the end of the season and played in six of the team's final eight games. The surgery will prevent Williams from taking part in Summer League, according to Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. The Hornets will play in both Sacramento and Las Vegas next month, and Williams had been expected to participate. Boone adds that Williams' focus will now turn to rehab and recovery before he resumes full workouts later in the offseason. Courtesy of: hoopsrumors.com |
Celtics Not Pursuing Trade For Bradley Beal, Intend To Sign Jaylen Brown To Extension - by Eurobasket News |
The Boston Celtics have long been linked with Bradley Beal (6'4''-G-1993, college: Florida) due to his relationship with Jayson Tatum, but they're not believed to be a realistic trade candidate with the Washington Wizards right now. The Celtics are believed to be prioritizing signing Jaylen Brown (6'6''-G/F-1996, college: California) to a supermax contract this offseason. "My feel from talking to sources is that the Celtics are not necessarily in on this one," said Brian Windhorst. "Their intention is to get Jaylen Brown on a contract extension this year. Even if they got Jaylen Brown done, the idea of bringing in Bradley Beal would be extraordinarily difficult because of the three contracts together. "I don't think any conversation that involves trading Jaylen Brown is something the Celtics are super interested in right now." Courtesy of: realgm.com |

Johnson is coming off his best statistical season, even though it was disrupted by an injury and a midseason trade from Phoenix to Brooklyn. He averaged 15.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 42 games, and those numbers improved to 16.6/4.8/2.1 after the Nets acquired him in February. A restricted free agent this summer, Johnson will be one of the most sought-after players on the market, with the Rockets and Pistons among the teams rumors to be interested. Team USA will hold training camp in Las Vegas beginning August 3 and will play its first exhibition game four days later against Puerto Rico. It will also travel to Spain and the United Arab Emirates before the World Cup begins August 26 in the Philippines. Courtesy of: hoopsrumors.com |

McKinney number one in Uruguayan Metropolitan for round 2 (by Hoops Agents) - by Eurobasket News
The 24-year old player had a double-double of 38 points and 18 rebounds, while his team beat O.Mundial (1-1) 90-77. 25 de Agosto is placed at 4th position in Uruguayan Metropolitan. 25 de Agosto is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 1-1 record. In the team's last game McKinney had a remarkable 76.9% from 2-point range. He just recently signed at 25 de Agosto and just after two games he already turned to be a very valuable addition to the team. Former Mount Mercy University star has very solid stats this year. McKinney is in league's top in points (2nd best: 27.5ppg), rebounds (3rd best: 13.0rpg) and averages impressive 66.7% FGP. The second best player in last round's games was young Argentinian Agustin Zuvich (201-F/C-1995) of Atenas. Zuvich had a very good evening with a double-double of 30 points and 19 rebounds. Of course Atenas cruised to a 89-82 relatively comfortable win over Lagomar (0-2). The season is still at the very beginning and this victory may help a lot. Let's wait for the next round. Zuvich is one of the most experienced players at Atenas and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 26.5ppg (#3). He also registered 14.5 boards per game. Third on the list of top players last round was American forward Karachi Edo (196-F-1994) of Capitol (#6). Edo scored 20 points and grabbed twenty one rebounds (!!!). Despite Edo's great performance Capitol lost 72-75 to Stockolmo (1-1). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Capitol needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 1 victory and 1 lost game. Edo has a great season in Uruguay. After only 2 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 21.0ppg (8th best) and rebounds with 20.0rpg (#1 in league). Edo attended one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball. Other top performing players last week: 4. Smith number one in Vietnam VBA for round 2 - by Eurobasket News
The 31-year old player had a double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds, while his team beat Dolphins (#6, 0-1), the league's bottom-ranked team 77-72. Thanks to this victory City Wings moved-up to the 4th position in Vietnamese VBA. City Wings is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 1-1 record. Smith just recently signed at City Wings and just after two games he already turned to be a very valuable addition to the team. Former Nicholls State University star has very solid stats this year. Smith is in league's top in points (3rd best: 29.0ppg), rebounds (7th best: 9.5rpg), assists (7th best: 5.5apg) and averages impressive 52.4% FGP. The second best player in last round's games was young American Robert Sampson (203-F-1992) of Dolphins. Sampson had a very good evening with a double-double of 25 points and 17 rebounds. Bad luck as Dolphins lost that game 72-77 to City Wings (1-1). The season is still at the very beginning and this lost game may not be such crucial, of course if they start win the games. Let's wait for the next round. Sampson is one of the most experienced players at Dolphins and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 25.0ppg (#5). He also registered 17.0 boards per game. Former Georgia Institute of Technology star Sampson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Third on the list of top players last round was American center DeAngelo Hamilton (203-C-1990) of Catfish (#5). Hamilton scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Despite Hamilton's great performance Catfish lost 72-86 to Buffaloes (#3, 1-1). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The season just started for Hamilton as he played only first game. But it already looks like he can be team's leader. Other top performing players last week: 4. Tam Dinh Thanh (192-SG-1990) of Buffaloes - 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists 5. RJ Smith (198-G-1997) of Buffaloes - 20 points and 13 rebounds 6. Dominique Tham (195-C-1996) of Dolphins - 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists 7. Amir Williams (211-C-1992) of City Wings - 11 points, 21 rebounds and 2 assists 8. Anthony January (204-PF-1993) of Buffaloes - 22 points, 21 rebounds and 2 assists 9. Vinh Nguyen Quang (180-G-1995) of City Wings - 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists 10. Morgan Jakongmee (185-PG-1997) of Catfish - 18 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

There are now 10 players expected to be part of Team USA, along with Johnson's Brooklyn teammate, Mikal Bridges, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (6'1''-G-1996, college: Villanova), Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards (6'5''-G-2001, college: Georgia), Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton (6'5''-G-2000, college: Iowa St.), Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram, Grizzlies big man Jaren Jackson Jr. (6'11''-F/C-1999, college: Michigan St.), Bucks forward Bobby Portis (6'10''-PF-1995, college: Arkansas) and Lakers guard Austin Reaves (6'5''-G-1998, college: Oklahoma).

Cumberland Valley guard Jill Jekot's next stop is the Big Ten Conference - by Eurobasket News |
Shooting guard Jill Jekot will enter her senior season at Cumberland Valley with her college future locked in. Jekot, a two-time first-team All-State selection who helped the Eagles go 12-11 overall last season, announced Wednesday that she'll join The Big Ten Conference as a member of the Penn State women's basketball team. The 6-foot playmaker made the announcement via social media, mere days after narrowing her final list to Pitt, Wake Forest and the Nittany Lions. 'PENN STATE UNIVERSITY!!. So excited to announce that I will be playing in Happy Valley for the next 4!' Jekot wrote on her Twitter account. 'Thank you to all family, friends, and coaches who helped me get here.' 'Penn State feels like home to me,' Jekot said Thursday. 'Coach [Carolyn] Kieger is a great coach with a great staff and I'm excited to play for them. Also, I have a huge support system here in Pennsylvania and I am thankful for the opportunity to play for my home state.' Jekot originally committed to Pitt in April but reopened her recruitment after former head coach Lance White was fired after five seasons. On Monday, Jekot told PennLive that she continued to have contact with new hire Tory Verdi and his coaching staff. The 6-foot guard took another visit to the Steel City last month and made recent visits to Penn State, where her older sister, Kelly, played as a graduate student, and Wake Forest. Under Kieger, the Nittany Lions finished a 14-17 season in early March with a 63-61 loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament. Despite missing six games with a knee injury, Jekot averaged 22.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game during her junior season. The Eagles eventually lost to Central Dauphin in the opening round of the District 3 6A playoffs. During the run, Jekot notched her 1,000th career point in January with older sisters Kelly, Katie and Julie in attendance. Kelly starred at Villanova and Penn State while Katie capped her career at St. Joseph's in March. Julie Jekot is a senior guard at LaSalle. Jill was tabbed Mid-Penn Commonwealth player of the year and earned her second straight appointment to the Pa. Sportswriters' 6A All-State team. Jekot was a third-team pick as a freshman. Tall Ferns Name Final Squad For FIBA Women's Asia Cup - by Mike Lacey |
Tall Ferns head coach, Guy Molloy has today named his squad of 12 for the FIBA Women's Asia Cup, which takes place in Sydney from 26 June - 2 July. The team includes: Stella Beck, Tayla Dalton, Penina Davidson, Grace Hunter, Charlisse Leger-Walker, Krystal Leger-Walker, Parris Mason, Esra McGoldrick, Tera Reed, Ritorya Tamilo, Josie Trousell and Tahlia Tupaea. The squad sees the return of three key players from the 2021 Women's Asia Cup squad; with Davidson the team's leading scorer and rebounder (15.4ppg and 8rpg) alongside sisters Charlisse (11ppg) and Krystal Walker-Leger (4apg). Beck, Trousdell and McGoldrick also bring added experience to the Tall Ferns with almost 100 caps between them, while newcomers Reed, Dalton, Hunter and Tamilo all offered glimpses of their talent against Serbia, Poland and Turkey in the New Zealand's recent tour of Europe. In addition, both Mason and Tupaea will make their Tall Ferns debuts in Sydney; Tahlia set wear the black jersey for the first time after previously playing for Australia at age group level - the guard also earning MVP honours in the inaugural Tauihi season in 2022. Parris was part of the Tall Ferns development squad last October, playing in four friendly games against Melbourne-based WNBL teams. Head coach Guy Molloy says that this squad represents a new era for the Tall Ferns. 'The Tall Ferns programme took a few body blows during the Covid years, but I'm really excited by our squad; this is an excellent Tall Ferns team for now and the Asia Cup in front of us,' says Molloy. 'I'm also really excited for the fresh faces and the young, athletic talent we're bringing into this group, I think it's the Tall Ferns team of the future as well.' 'That trio of Penina, Charlisse and Krystal are all key to this squad, and on top of that bringing back the experience of Stella Beck is an important addition - as is the new addition to the squad of Tahlia [Tupaea], who will give us a different a different dimension of player that we probably haven't had before. And having Josie Trousdell back is key; the last Asia Cup she played in was 2017 and we'll count on her as a defensive presence. 'So when we looked at these additions to the group - as well as another player who had a successful stint in Europe as a pro in Tera Reed - they make us a stronger unit from that last Asia Cup. These players, who weren't at the last Asia Cup, have the potential to really shine for us.' Molloy is excited by the injection of youth, energy and height into this year's squad. 'Tayla Dalton, Grace Hunter and the other young ones we've got in there, there's a real energy factor about them. We're obviously aware of the step up in speed playing internationally - where we're having to defend a lot of quick players - so increased athleticism was really important for us and Tayla and Grace are good examples of that, players who are active and good defenders who can keep their player in front of them. 'And looking at our bigs, the addition of exciting young players like Parris Mason, Esra McGoldrick and 17-year-old Ritorya Tamilo; they give us great height and wingspan, this is a taller team than we had two years ago and a more athletic team. So the addition of these players is really important.' Molloy says that beyond a top four finish at the Asia Cup - which brings them one step closer to a berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics - the Tall Ferns programme has other key goals to achieve. 'We were beginning to come up the world rankings in 2019 and were unlucky [at that time] not to qualify for the Olympics. To me that was a pinnacle moment four years ago around our culture and style of play; the last four years for us have been tough as we've had to ride through Covid and some of our top players have dropped off along the way. 'I'm confident we're on our way back up again and that's what this Asia Cup squad is all about; it's a re-establishment of the Tall Ferns culture and the way we want to represent New Zealand. The re-emergence of the game style that we want; which is probably closer to our 2019 style and far removed from where we were in 2021.' The Tall Ferns head to Sydney on 22 June as one of eight countries participating in the FIBA Asia Women's Cup, facing Korea, China and Lebanon in the Group stage from 26 June.
