Manama breeze into semi-finals - by Eurobasket News |
Manama stormed into the semi-finals after Mustafa Husain, Travin Thibodeaux (203-F-1996, college: New Orleans) and Sir'Dominic Pointer (198-G/F-1992, college: St.John's) combined to consign Beirut First Club to an 86-75 defeat last night in their second Group A game of the FIBA WASL Final 8 series at the Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Sports Hall in Dubai. Husain scored 16 points to go with three rebounds and five assists, Thibodeaux tallied 15 points along with six rebounds and two assists and Pointer netted 14 points with eight rebounds and two assists as Manama galloped to a 50-38 lead at half-time and led 66-58 when the fourth and last quarter began. With five minutes remaining, Manama had increased their lead to 10 points at 76-66 and, when the game entered its last two minutes, seemed assured of victory as they led 82-69. Fittingly, with just three seconds left till the final buzzer, it was Husain who scored the last two points for Manama to take the final score to 86-75 and seal a dominant win. This was a must-win game for both teams, after Manama lost their first game, 112-84, to group leaders Al Riyadi, the FIBA WASL West Asia champions Al Riyadi, from Lebanon, last Saturday and Beirut Club were also hammered, 106-91, by their Lebanese compatriots two days ago. This meant that Al Riyadi sailed through to the semi-finals after topping the Group A table with four points leaving Manama, the FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL)-Gulf Region runners-up, to battle it out with FIBA WASL West Asia runners-up Beirut Club for the remaining semi-final slot from their group. Having placed second in their group with three points, Manama will now take on Group B toppers BC Astana, from Kazakhstan, in the first semi-final tomorrow while Al Riyadi will face Kuwait Club in the second. Seven teams, including the top three sides each from the FIBA WASL West Asia and WASL-Gulf leagues plus the top teams from South and Central Asia, have taken part in the competition which began last Friday with the opening game of the tournament between Kazakhstan's BC Astana and Shabab Al Ahli from Dubai. Chennai Heat, the 2023 Indian National Basketball League (INBL) champions, were supposed to be the eighth team in the tournament but they pulled out of the tournament last week, leaving just three teams, including Manama, in Group A. Group B featured Kuwait Club, Shabab Al Ahli, Iran's Gorgan and BC Astana. Whichever two teams make it to the final will automatically qualify for the FIBA Champions Cup which provides the pathway to the international basketball body's leading club competition - the Intercontinental Cup. Eddie Ekiyor claims CEBL weekly honour - by Eurobasket News
Eddie Ekiyor (206-C-1997) had an amazing evening in the last round for Niagara and that's him to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 6. The 25-year old center had the game-high 15 points adding seven rebounds for Niagara in his team's victory, helping them to beat Montreal (#10, 2-5) 100-93. Niagara is placed at 7th position in CEBL. Ekiyor just recently signed at Niagara, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Eddie Ekiyor averages this season 13.6ppg and 5.6rpg. The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young American guard Treveon Graham (198-G-1993) of Montreal. Graham impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds. Bad luck as Montreal lost that game 72-104 to slightly higher-ranked Scarborough (#9, 2-4). The game was between two teams which are definitely not main contenders for the title. Montreal dropped in the standings to very bottom position. 5 lost games are too many comparing to just two victories Montreal managed to get this year. Graham is one of the most experienced players at Montreal and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. The third best performed player last round was another Montreal's star - American Ahmed Hill (196-SG-1995). Hill scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Despite Hill's great performance Montreal lost 93-100 to the higher-ranked Niagara (#7, 3-4). But his team cannot count on just these two top stars as they also need help of the other teammates. Montreal can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have extremely bad season and 2-5 record places them at the very bottom of the standings. Hill has a very solid season. In 6 games in CEBL he scored 16.0ppg. Other top performing players last week: 4. Teddy Allen (198-G-1998) of Winnipeg - 27 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists 5. Blake Francis (183-PG-1998) of Montreal - 23 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists 10. Jahvon Henry-Blair (193-G-1998) of Niagara - 26 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. Moussa Diagne Will Never Forget Thinking After Steph Curry Scored 5 Points In The First Half What All The Hype Was And Then Seeing Him Hit From Everywhere Scoring 25 In The Second Half - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber |
Moussa Diagne (203-F/C-1984, college: Furman) is a former professional player from Senegal that played 3 seasons and all with the Telekom Baskets Bonn from 2007-2010 playing a total of 72 BBL games and 14 Eurochallenge games averaging 7.1ppg, 2.9rpg, FGP: 51.0%, 3PT: 29.3%, FT: 61.1%. From 2007-2009 he averaged 5,0ppg and 2,0rpg in the BBL. He played at Mount Olive Prep Academy in Marietta Georgia and then played at Furman from 2003-2007 playing a total of 112 NCAA games. He averaged in double figures in 3 of his 4 NCAA seasons. He looked back on his career and gave memories of the 2009 BBL finals against the EWE Baskets Oldenburg. Thanks Moussa for talking to eurobasket.com. Where are you at the moment and how is basketball life treating you? I am still living in Bonn and still enjoying watching the Telekom Baskets whenever I can. You retired in 2010. You had a short 3 year professional career all with Bonn. Why did you retire so young? Did you simply have a better opportunity off the court that you couldn't pass up? Yes, I did retire after just 3 years of playing professional basketball due to a knee injury. Life outside the basketball court has been great though can't complain. How have you been keeping busy since you retired in 2010? Do you still have some kind of ties to the game? I am living a regular life working and spending time with my family. I will be Coaching the first men's Oberliga team of BG Bonn next Season. I am still recruiting for my team so any good player around Bonn Koeln is free to join the tryouts the next weeks. You played at Furman (NCAA) from 2003-2007. What memories do you have of that time. The NCAA game was a lot different than today. College experiences and specially basketball experiences is something I will live with my whole life. The bus rides to the games and going against some big names players on todays NBA. There are a few great memories. In your second season you played against UNC Greensboro and an unknown freshman by the name of Kyle Hines. You had a 16/8 game and he a 7/6 game. Do you have any memories of that game and his play? Kyle Hines, has always been a dominant inside player. He has a great inside presence with great touch's. To bad he didn't make it to the NBA. I feel like he was better than lots of forward in the league. I actually have a photo from that game. In your senior year you played against Davidson 3 times and a certain unknown Steph Curry. Did his hot shooting already stick in your mind then or was he just a normal guard to you then? I had heard the name of a certain freshman Stefan Curry before our first game against Davidson In 2007. He was back then putting up big numbers before our match up. Curry scored 5 points the first half and I was like that boy and nothing I don't know why people are so hype about him. Curry came the second half and started shooting from everywhere. He scored 25 points the second half. Who was the toughest forward that you battled in the NCAA that reached the NBA? I played against Andrew Bogut from Utah in the Alaska invitational in Anchorage Alaska. He was tough to guard. He was the number draft pick that year. Who won a 1-1 in practice you or Laquan Prowell? Quan was a very athletic player. We had some great battles in practice. A one and one game can swing both way. You came to Bonn in 2007 after having a sensational senior year averaging 13/5. Did you expect your rookie season to be easier than how it went? You hardly played for head coach Mike Koch. I came to Bonn in 2007 after my senior year in college. I enjoyed playing for Mike Koch and I think I had played pretty good minutes my first year. I told Mike my first year that we have some good scorers on the team and my focus was to be the best defender on the team and I accepted that role. I can imagine one of your most memorable BBL games was the win against Bamberg where you had 9 points. What do you remember from that game? My most memorable game in the BBL was my first year during game 5 against Frankfurt in Frankfurt where I scored 17points and a memorable dunk over the best defender that time Koko Archibong. We won that game without our 3 starters to move to the finale against Alba Berlin. You helped the Telekom Baskets Bonn reach the final in 2009. Bonn is back in the final for the first team as they had an incredible season. The Final lost against Oldenburg in 2009 was a nightmare. We were so close and the city and fans in Bonn deserved to have that Titel. I live in Bonn and still support the team. I am so happy to see them make the final and I am praying that they will be the champion at the end of the season by defeating Ulm. The 2008-2009 Bonn was a special team that finished the regular season in fourth place. What do you remember being this team's biggest strength? We were a great group that loved to play together and win games. The strength of our team was the unselfishness of the guys. Each player accepted his role and played it to the fullest day in day out. The team had 2 ex NBA players with Ken Johnson and Vincent Yarbrough and a third player by the name of Brandon Bowman who I felt should always have made it. How important was his play for the success of the team? All those guys played a big part of our team success. Ken and Vince were two great defenders and Brandon was our go guy on offense. Brandon offensive skills was a big part of our team offensive success in 2008-2009. How will you remember John Bowler most? He was an unorthodox player that also had a original character and humor. John Bowler, was a very good inside and outside player. You never knew which area of his game was going to destabilize your defense. His humor outside basketball is still something that I always remember from him. What memories will you always have of EJ Rowland? The guy just completed his 18th season at age 40. I guess his wheels never fell off. EJ is a lion. He wheels ain't going to fall that easy. He is a grinder a true leader. I enjoyed having him as a teammate. What people may not know about him is that he is a very funny guy outside the basketball court. Is Jeff Gibbs one of those guys that you will never forget playing against? How does a 22 centimeter advantage that Ken Johnson still give a big man problems? Was he one of the greatest undersized bigs you ever saw? Jeff Gibbs was definitely one of the most under sized small forward I played against. He was an incredible rebounder and defender for a guy of his size. How do you remember the crazy final against Oldenburg. Bonn was always up a game, but Oldenburg always fought back. Was the 71-70 loss in game 5 your toughest loss in your career? That was definitely the toughest lost in my career because it was a final that we thought it was our until the last second. They said it's not over until the fat lady sings. It was a though one. Talk a little about the last seconds. How do you remember witnessing them? I mean we were winning and thought this was going our way. We were feeling good about ourselves until the very last second when we turned the ball over and allowed Oldenburg an and one. It was horrible but its sports life goes on. hat was the difference in the series? Could Bonn had won the series keeping Ricky Paulding better in check? Ricky Paulding is an awesome player. One of the most talented played I have played against in the BBL. But we would have won that game if we didn't turn the ball over in that very last second to allow Oldenburg an and one to take up the lead. Please name your starting 5 of favorite Bonn teammates? Vince Yarbrough , Arthur , Mia Davis, Patrick Flomo, John Bowler Who won a 1-1 you or Patrick Flomo? I am a better outside shooter so I might won this one . Who do you remember being the toughest center that you battled in Germany? Boumthie Boumthie from Oldenburg. He was a giant and I had tough time guarding him. The Telekom Baskets Bonn are down 01 in the best of 5 series against Ulm. What is your prediction? I think it will come down to game 5, 3-2 for Bonn. I see Bonn winning its first ever BBL championship this year. Thanks Moussa for the chat |

Sources: Wizards to work with Bradley Beal on trade scenarios - by Eurobasket News |
As rival teams begin reaching out to the Washington Wizards to explore the possibility of trading for three-time All-Star guard Bradley Beal (6'4''-G-1993, college: Florida), team president Michael Winger and Beal's agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, are staying in close contact to discuss scenarios presented to the franchise, sources told ESPN on Wednesday. After completing the first season of a five-year, $251 million contract, Beal's unique standing as the NBA's only current player to have a no-trade clause negotiated into his deal gives him the ability to control not only possible destinations, but also how a potential package to acquire Beal impacts his ability to play for a contender elsewhere. If Winger is inclined to fundamentally reshape the roster of a franchise that has missed the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, teams won't only have to talk with Winger and Wizards general manager Will Dawkins on trade ideas -- they'll have to include Bartelstein in a three-way conversation. With the NBA draft looming on June 22 and free agency commencing July 1, conversations on Beal's future with the Wizards are expected to become more frequent, sources said. Beal, who has played his entire 11-year career with Washington, has enjoyed a close relationship with the community and owner Ted Leonsis. Nevertheless, Leonsis said he has given Winger full autonomy on whether he wants to pursue a rebuild with the Wizards or continue a trajectory around high-priced veteran talent. The Wizards are awaiting player-option decisions by forwards Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis, who can both become unrestricted free agents. Beal averaged 23.2 points on a career-best 51% shooting in an injury-plagued 50 games last season. For his career, he has averaged 22.1 points, including back-to-back seasons of 30.5 points and 31.3 points in 2019-20 and 2020-21. Courtesy of: espn.com |
Mark Williams Has Thumb Surgery - by Eurobasket News |
Mark Williams (7'0''-C-2001, college: Duke) underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, the Hornets announced in a press release. The rookie center is expected to make a full recovery, according to the team, although no specific timetable was given. The 15th pick in last year's draft, Williams appeared in 43 games and made 17 starts this season. He finished second among rookies with 1.0 blocks per game, third in field goal percentage at 63.7%, fourth in rebounds at 7.1 per night and fifth with 11 double-doubles. He also averaged 9.0 PPG in 19.3 minutes per game. Williams missed some time with a sprained thumb in March, but he was able to return before the end of the season and played in six of the team's final eight games. The surgery will prevent Williams from taking part in Summer League, according to Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. The Hornets will play in both Sacramento and Las Vegas next month, and Williams had been expected to participate. Boone adds that Williams' focus will now turn to rehab and recovery before he resumes full workouts later in the offseason. Courtesy of: hoopsrumors.com |
Celtics Not Pursuing Trade For Bradley Beal, Intend To Sign Jaylen Brown To Extension - by Eurobasket News |
The Boston Celtics have long been linked with Bradley Beal (6'4''-G-1993, college: Florida) due to his relationship with Jayson Tatum, but they're not believed to be a realistic trade candidate with the Washington Wizards right now. The Celtics are believed to be prioritizing signing Jaylen Brown (6'6''-G/F-1996, college: California) to a supermax contract this offseason. "My feel from talking to sources is that the Celtics are not necessarily in on this one," said Brian Windhorst. "Their intention is to get Jaylen Brown on a contract extension this year. Even if they got Jaylen Brown done, the idea of bringing in Bradley Beal would be extraordinarily difficult because of the three contracts together. "I don't think any conversation that involves trading Jaylen Brown is something the Celtics are super interested in right now." Courtesy of: realgm.com |

Knight number one in Puerto Rico BSN for week 40 - by Eurobasket News
The 31-year old player was the main contributor (34 points, five rebounds and five assists) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Arecibo (#3, 17-18) 110-104. It allowed Quebradillas to consolidate first place in the Puerto Rican BSN. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Quebradillas has a very solid 23-11 record, but they cannot be too comfortable about keeping top position. In the team's last game Knight had a remarkable 55.6% from 2-point range and got five three-pointers out of 10 attempts. He just recently signed at Quebradillas, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Former University of Kentucky star has very solid stats this year. Knight is league's best scorer averaging so far 24.4ppg. Knight is in league's top in and averages impressive 55.5% FGP. The second best player in last week's games was young American DJ Hogg (203-F-1996) of Mayaguez. Hogg had a very good evening with 29 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Of course he led Mayaguez to another comfortable win outscoring slightly lower-ranked Manati (#6, 11-24) 118-86. Mayaguez's 4th position in Group A has not changed. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 16-19 record. Hogg is one of the most experienced players at Mayaguez and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 21.3ppg (#4). His other stats are also decent: 5.8rpg and 3.7apg. Third on the list of top players last week was American swingman James Ennis (201-F/G-1990) of Humacao (#5). Ennis showcased his all-around game by recording 26 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the last week. He was a key player of Humacao, leading his team to a 108-91 easy win against the higher-ranked Bayamon (#1, 22-12). The chances of Humacao not to end season at such low position in Group B, however are less than slim as they have already lost 21 games, recording just thirteen victories. Metropolitan Round 2: O.Mundial is defeated by 25 de Agosto - by Eurobasket News
There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Regular Season in Metropolitan. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market. The most surprising game was a loss of O.Mundial in Montevideo on Monday night. Visitors were defeated by 25 de Agosto 90-77. They made 20-of-26 free shots (76.9 percent) during the game. American forward Dennis McKinney (194-1998, college: Mt.Mercy, agency: GoEmpire Group) had a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) to lead the charge for the winners and point guard Martin Counago (182-1997) chipped in 17 points during the contest. Forward Lucas Silva (197-2002) responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. 25 de Agosto's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Montevideo to the arena Miramar. Very significant was Colon's just 2-point road victory against Sayago 89-87. American guard Jamal Bieniemy (196-1999, college: UTEP) notched 36 points (!!!) and 4 steals to lead the effort and Andres Aristimuno supported him with 14 points and 5 assists. Even a double-double of 25 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists by American Rakim Brown (198-1991, college: Humboldt St.) did not help to save the game for Sayago. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Colon will play against Welcome in Montevideo in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Sayago will play on the road against Atenas in Montevideo to get more than just one victory in their record. Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Montevideo: Urunday and Olimpia. Urunday smashed visiting Olimpia by 30 points 81-51. The best player for the winners was DNicolas Delgado who had a double-double by scoring 13 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. Al Thornton produced 10 points and 7 rebounds for the guests. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Urunday's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Montevideo to the arena Verdirrojo. There were no shocking results in the other games in round 2: Atenas won against Lagomar on the opponent's court 89-82. Stockolmo managed to outperform Capitol in a home game 75-72. The 24-year old player had a double-double of 38 points and 18 rebounds, while his team beat O.Mundial (1-1) 90-77. 25 de Agosto is placed at 4th position in Uruguayan Metropolitan. 25 de Agosto is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 1-1 record. In the team's last game McKinney had a remarkable 76.9% from 2-point range. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 1 victory and 1 lost game. Edo has a great season in Uruguay. After only 2 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 21.0ppg (8th best) and rebounds with 20.0rpg (#1 in league). Montana Tech Releases First Recruiting Class Under Jeff Graham - by Stephan Ditgens |
BUTTE, Montana - Montana Tech head women's basketball coach Jeff Graham announced his first recruiting class today. The Orediggers have six commits starting school in the fall with checking almost every box on the recruit checklist. In addition to the incoming six, the Orediggers return 10 student-athletes including starters Soda Rice and Aubrie Rademacher. Coach Graham had to get his feet under him quickly last year after arriving in Butte in early August missing the opportunity to recruit. With one season under his belt, coach Graham is ready to show his knowledge of young talent and ability to land solid prospects. The Montana Tech women's basketball staff was ecstatic when they landed their first recruit in Chloe Santeford. Santeford, a four-year varsity starter originally from Haiti, graduated Stanwood High School in Washington. Coach Graham landed a big-time student-athlete and kept one of the top recruits in the state close to home in Butte Central's Brooke Badovinac. Keeping the best local talent in Butte is a one of the goals in Coach Graham's recruiting plan. Along with Badovinac, two more Montana products in Havre's Avery Carlson and Madison Chappuis from Bigfork join the team. Tech women's basketball also added size to their 2023 recruiting class with the signing of Booklynn Hankwitz transferring from Linn-Benton Community College. Rounding out the class is another upperclassman with size and skill under the basket. Former all-conference and all-region selection Tech volleyball player Taylor Henley joins the team with one season of eligibility. Chloe Santeford - 5-5 Guard - Port-au-Prince, Haiti Four-year varsity starter and four-year defensive player of the year for the Stanwood HS Girls' Basketball team. Chloe has a 3.77 cumulative GPA and will be studying business at Montana Tech. Chloe is the youngest of the Santeford's six children was born in Port-au-Prince. Coach Graham: "Chloe brings a lot to our program at both ends of the floor. She's a shutdown defender and has the ability to create shots for our shooters. Chloe will make an immediate impact on our program. She was our first signee of the 2023 class and we couldn't be more excited to have her. She came very highly recommended from former Tech standout Zeke Bambolo. After watching one minute of film on her, Coach Thatcher was sold." Brooke Badovinac - 5-11 Guard - Butte, Mont. We couldn't be more excited she has chosen to continue her career in Butte. She fits our program perfectly because she has the ability to score from anywhere on the floor." "Brooke has been very well-coached throughout her career at Butte Central in three sports. She has been an integral part in the success Butte Central has seen during the last four year. She is a proven winner and has been a team leader for Coach Brian Solomon's extremely successful volleyball program. We are very excited to have her join our already-talented group. Her toughness is going to bleed over to her teammates and help us to win games." Avery Carlson - 5-7 Guard - Havre, Mont. She comes from three winning programs at Havre High and we're excited for her to bring that winning culture to our program," commented Head Coach Jeff Graham. "We're working to build a culture of success here at Montana Tech and she's going to help us with that process. She's a tremendous on-ball defender and floor general. She has been extremely well coached by Coach Kraske and his staff throughout her wonderful career." "Tech's educational offerings fit Avery perfectly as she is very driven in the classroom. She is going to fit in great here in Butte because she is a hard-nosed competitor. We are thrilled to add her competitiveness and toughness to our program." Madison Chappuis - 5-10 Forward - Bigfork, Mont. Madison Chappuis played prep at Bigfork High School, where she was a standout in both basketball and track and field. She helped lead Bigfork to a 3rd place finish at State in 2022 and its first ever State Championship in 2023. In track and field, Chappuis has qualified for the State Meet in both the Javelin and Shot Put since her sophomore year. Under the tutelage of the track gurus Wayne and Sue Loeffler, Madison has continued to improve throughout her career. Madison finished 3rd in the Javelin and 4th place in the Shot Put at the 2023 State B Track Meet. Coach Graham: "Adding Madison to our roster will provide length and athleticism to our roster. She is a versatile defender and has a very high basketball ceiling. Coach Gunlock raves about her work ethic and character, and rightfully so." "We are excited about adding Madison to our budding women's throws group. She just had a great State Meet with double PRs in the javelin and shot put.
