GERMANY
Even 14 Years After Reaching The BBL Final With The Telekom Baskets Bonn Ken Johnson's Fondest Moment Overseas Was Always The Plane Ride Home - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber
I last saw Kennyetta Johnson (210-C-1978, college: Ohio St.) 14 years ago when he was playing with the Telekom Baskets Bonn. Time flies and sometimes it is difficult to remember details from interviews especially when you have interviewed so many guys over 20 years. The season before he came to Bonn, the ex NBA player suited up for the then Deutsche Bank Skyliners and I remember interviewing him in his apartment in Basketball City Mainhatten in Frankfurt. I was recording special footage for my then weekly basketball show on radio called Tipoff Basketball Bundesliga magazine. Ken who is a deeply religious man was cooking lunch for himself and I had to stare at him in astonishment a few times when seeing just how tall he was. There had been a reason why he had reached the NBA and become a block monster in every league he had played in. I wanted to get as much information about his playing career and already back then had unending questions. And then it happened, the conversation changed from basketball to family. He told me how much he missed his daughter. I could really feel how sad he was. At that point he was already playing his seventh professional season and somehow was living away from his family. Usually the family is with the player, but often when they aren't, the basketball dream overseas dies, because the family becomes most important and guys just head home again. After 9 seasons Kennyetta Johnson called it a career and went back to Ohio. 'I would say the fondest moments for me while playing in Europe was when I was on a plane going back home. That might sound somewhat harsh but I spent 9 years in Europe while my children were at home. That was 10 months out of the year that I could not see them and the little breaks we did get was just not enough. I'm a family man and I believe that family is first that is the main reason why I retired early', stressed Kennyetta Johnson. 14 years later after I read his thoughts on his daughters during his career, my memory of being in the kitchen in Frankfurt with him and his sadness over missing his daughter popped back into my mind.

Kennyetta Johnson enjoyed a fruitful 9 year pro career after having a stellar career at Ohio State where he led the NCAA in blocks in 2000. 'I do miss playing college ball to be honest that was the best time of my life', stressed Kennyetta Johnson. He was drafted by the Miami Heat in 2001 at #48. He played 16 NBA games for the Miami Heat and had the honor to play for the legendary Pat Riley. 'Pat Riley looks like a tough guy and he is. He wasn't a screamer but he demanded you do what was asked of you or you would not play. Pat Riley gave us a story once about Magic Johnson and Kareem and said that it was a completely different era and they were very dominant and their practices were just as hard as games if not harder', remembered Kennyetta Johnson. He played his final NBA game against the Toronto Raptors winning 103-99 and recording 8 points, 10 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block. After his NBA stint and playing for the Dakota Wizards and Huntsville Flight, he would go on to have a stellar career overseas playing in countries like Italy, France, Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Germany and Estonia. He also played for D-League team Alburquerque Thunderbirds. He played two years in Germany with Frankfurt and Bonn. He reached the semi-finals with Frankfurt and reached the final with Bonn in 2009. 14 years later, I wanted to give him a big interview, but because of his job, he answered only some of my questions. I wanted to get his memories of the bitter 5 game series loss to Oldenburg, but sometimes being silent is better. 'I do not follow the teams that I played for because life has moved on for me. I played for several different teams and they're just too many teams to follow but every now and then I do hear about the success from Bonn and Bourg in France. Our team in Germany was very talented and we had several guys that cooked and really played high level ball but we all know that the NBA is really politics and your agent. It's all part of the game and I've learned to accept that. I am thankful for that time and I'm very grateful and I thank God for the opportunity', stressed Kennyetta Johnson. Fans will remember Kennyetta Johnson as a rim protector and big that could get your team out of a jam. He once had 8 blocks against Cologne. It was always enjoyable watching him swat away balls. It would be interesting to see how a young Kennyetta Johnson would fair in today's game. 'Today's game has changed drastically. The big men are basically expected to dribble and shoot perimeter shots. The bigs like Shaq and Yao Ming are rarely needed now they are too slow for today's game. Today's game is not as physical as the NBA in the early 2000s', warned Kennyetta Johnson.

If you follow Kennyetta Johnson on social media in 2023, you will often see him posting pictures of himself and people next to car's. His life in the job world now revolves around cars. Anyone that is a salesman knows that selling something can be as demanding as trying to guard a Shaq back in the day. He also knows that he has certain advantages over other salesmen who don't have that same menacing presence and overwhelming back round. 'Life after basketball has been good but challenging. My body hurts all the time but I manage to stay active. My sales job keeps me waking up at 6m every day which is good as I age. I have never liked being a salesman because of high pressure tactics but I have managed to do well here just being honest and being myself. Customers love me because of my sports background and not being your typical pushy salesman', stated Kennyetta Johnson. He has been away for the game now for 13 years and does think often about the happy times overseas. 'I don't really miss pro ball what I do miss is the relationships that I've gained, I miss the awesome fans in each city, and I miss some of the teammates that I've had along the way', said Kennyetta Johnson. His time overseas may not always have been easy as he was without family, but he made a living and could support his family. The most important thing now is that he can always be with his family. 'I enjoy every moment that I am here with them. My oldest daughter has already graduated and my second daughter is almost finished with college as well so I am very proud of them. Life is too short and I believe that there is nothing more important than family', warned Kennyetta Johnson. Family should always be #1.

32-year old DeMarcus Cousins (211-C/F-1990) had a great game in the last week for second-ranked Guaynabo and receives a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for week 39.
He had a double-double of 33 points and 17 rebounds, while his team beat San German (#2, 20-13) 111-105. Guaynabo maintains the 2nd position in their group in Puerto Rican league. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Guaynabo will need more victories to improve their 20-15 record. In the team's last game Cousins had a remarkable 62.5% from 2-point range. He just recently signed at Guaynabo, being already a very valuable addition to the team. University of Kentucky graduate has very impressive stats this year. Cousins is in league's top in points (5th best: 20.4ppg), rebounds (3rd best: 10.9rpg) and averages solid 1.4bpg,57.8% FGP and 43.7% from behind 3-point line.

Second best performed player last week was Angel Matias (194-F-1992) of Santurce. He is naturalized American forward in his first season at Santurce. In the last game Matias recorded impressive double-double of 35 points and 12 rebounds. It was enough for Santurce to edge slightly higher-ranked Quebradillas (#1, 23-11) by 6 points 99-93. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the top position in Group A. Santurce consolidated its place in top 3 of the standings. His team's 18-17 record is not bad at all. Matias is one of the most experienced players at Santurce and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

Third place about best performers goes to guard Nate Mason (188-G-1995) of league's second-best San German. Mason showcased his all-around game by recording 26 points, seven rebounds and ten assists (!!!) in the last week. Despite Mason's great performance San German lost 105-111 to #2 ranked Guaynabo. But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates especially in such crucial game. The last thing San German needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams in Group A. Their record is 20 victories and 13 lost games. Mason has a great season in Puerto Rico. After 16 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in assists with 7.3apg (3rd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Mike Scott (203-PF-1988) of Carolina - 33 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists

American Guard Brandon Knight (190-G-1991) had a very impressive game in the last week for top-ranked Quebradillas, receiving a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for week 40.
The 31-year old player was the main contributor (34 points, five rebounds and five assists) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Arecibo (#3, 17-18) 110-104. It allowed Quebradillas to consolidate first place in the Puerto Rican BSN. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Quebradillas has a very solid 23-11 record, but they cannot be too comfortable about keeping top position. In the team's last game Knight had a remarkable 55.6% from 2-point range and got five three-pointers out of 10 attempts. He just recently signed at Quebradillas, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Former University of Kentucky star has very solid stats this year. Knight is league's best scorer averaging so far 24.4ppg. Knight is in league's top in and averages impressive 55.5% FGP.

The second best player in last week's games was young American DJ Hogg (203-F-1996) of Mayaguez. Hogg had a very good evening with 29 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Of course he led Mayaguez to another comfortable win outscoring slightly lower-ranked Manati (#6, 11-24) 118-86. Mayaguez's 4th position in Group A has not changed. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 16-19 record. Hogg is one of the most experienced players at Mayaguez and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 21.3ppg (#4). His other stats are also decent: 5.8rpg and 3.7apg.

Third on the list of top players last week was American swingman James Ennis (201-F/G-1990) of Humacao (#5). Ennis showcased his all-around game by recording 26 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the last week. He was a key player of Humacao, leading his team to a 108-91 easy win against the higher-ranked Bayamon (#1, 22-12). The chances of Humacao not to end season at such low position in Group B, however are less than slim as they have already lost 21 games, recording just thirteen victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Ennis could try to bring Humacao's a little bit higher in the standings. Ennis has a very solid season. In 12 games in Puerto Rico he scored 17.8ppg. He also has 8.0rpg, 3.2apg, FGP: 53.8% and 3PT: 52.2%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Gary Browne (185-PG-1993) of Guaynabo - 20 points, 5 rebounds and 12 assists
5. Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (188-G-1998) of Mayaguez - 25 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists
6. Javier Mojica (189-SG-1984) of Bayamon - 33 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists
7. Walter Hodge (183-PG-1986) of Arecibo - 27 points, 2 rebounds and 5 assists
8. Jamil Wilson (201-F-1990) of Ponce - 18 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists
9. Travis Trice II (183-PG-1993) of Humacao - 17 points, 2 rebounds and 11 assists
10. Hassan Whiteside (213-C-1989) of Quebradillas - 20 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists

Capitals' offense missing in elimination game - by Eurobasket News
Heading into Tuesday's decisive Game 3 between the Salem Capitals and Seattle Super Hawks, the two teams had played six consecutive games decided by one possession, but a slow start and the second lowest point total of the season for the Capitals brought their season to an end. The Capitals never led in the 109-96 loss, though they were able to close the gap and tie the game throughout. The 96 points is the lowest from Salem since Feb. 24, the second game of the season where they lost 134-86 at Newfoundland. Allen Billinger (5'11''-PG-1997, college: Drury) Jr. and Preston Whitfield (6'1''-G-1997, college: CBC), the team's leading and third leading scorers, combined for just 15 points on 3-for-17 shooting. The two had averaged nearly 40 points combined during the season, but Tuesday was a different story. All six of Whitefield's points came from the free throw line as he shot 0-for-5 from the field. Isaiah Gentry (6'4''-G-1998, college: Vanguard) had a team-high 26 points for the Capitals on 50% shooting from the floor. Meanwhile Mauricio Smith (6'5''-F-1999, college: Corban) was one rebound shy of his second straight double-double for the Capitals with 16 points and nine rebounds. For the Super Hawks, Alphonso Anderson (6'6''-F, college: Pacific) had his way inside again. The Capitals' postseason run had been marred by an inability to stop their opponents inside, being outscored 206-102 through three games. Anderson came away with a double double, with 23 points and 13 rebounds. In game 2, Anderson had 38 points in the losing effort. The Super Hawks shot 93% from the free throw line, and outrebounded the Capitals 53-42. Seattle, the top-ranked team in the West, will now play Long Beach in the Western Finals.

Kentrell Barkley's triple-double lands him Player of the Week award - by Eurobasket News

26-year old swingman Kentrell Barkley (195-G/F-1996, agency: Haylett Sports) had an amazing evening in the last round for second-ranked Saigon Heat and receives a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 1.
He recorded a triple-double of 28 points adding also 16 rebounds and 10 assists, while his team beat Buffaloes (#4, 1-1) 85-71. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Saigon Heat is placed at 2nd position in Vietnamese league. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Saigon Heat won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. In the team's last game Barkley had a remarkable 81.8% from 2-point range. He just recently signed at Saigon Heat and it was his first game, where he immediately became new team's leader. East Carolina University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Barkley is in league's top in points (4th best: 28.0ppg), rebounds (4th best: 16.0rpg) and averages solid 81.8% FGP.

Second best performed player last round was Jermaine Marrow (183-PG-1997) of Dragons. He is American guard in his first season at Dragons. In the last game Marrow recorded impressive 39 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Bad luck as Dragons lost that game 94-106 to Warriors (1-0). The season is still at the very beginning and this lost game may not be such crucial, of course if they start win the games. Let's wait for the next round. Marrow is one of the most experienced players at Dragons and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 39.0ppg (#1). His other stats are also decent: 9.0rpg and 5.0apg.

Third place about best performers goes to guard Sameen Swint (193-G-1995) of Warriors (#3). Swint got into 30-points club by scoring 32 points in the last round. He went also for five rebounds and eight assists. He was a key player of Warriors, leading his team to a 106-94 win against Dragons (#7, 0-1). Warriors has a very good start of the season. But there was just one game played, so it's too early to judge them at this stage. Swint also has a very good start of the season with very strong stats. The season just started for Swint as he played only first game. But it already looks like he can be team's leader.

Other top performing players last week:
4. John Fields (205-F/C-1988) of Warriors - 18 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists
5. Anthony January (204-PF-1993) of Buffaloes - 19 points, 20 rebounds and 2 assists
6. Yevgen Sakhniuk (201-F-1995) of Dragons - 6 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists
7. Phu Vinh Nguyen (203-F/C-1998) of Saigon Heat - 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists
8. RJ Smith (198-G-1997) of Buffaloes - 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists
9. Hung Nguyen (195-C-1991) of Warriors - 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Will Tran (F-1998) of Dragons - 17 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists

Senegal names provisional squad for 2023 Women's AfroBasket - by Eurobasket News
Senegal on Wednesday, June 7, announced a 19-woman preliminary squad for the much-anticipated 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket due in Kigali in July. According to the Senegalese Basketball Federation, the former African champions will start their preparations for the biennial African Championship on June 12 at Marius Ndiaye Stadium in Dakar. Moustapha Gueye is returning as head coach and summoned a squad that includes four players who helped Senegal to a fourth-place finish at the 2021 Women's AfroBasket in Cameroon. Among key players that the veteran coach selected in his squad include Sokhna Sylla, Yacine Diop, Oumoul Khiam Sarr, Madjiguene Sene and point guard Cierra Dillard. This is Dillard's first Senegal call-up since receiving her Senegalese citizenship. Last December, the 27-year-old played a huge role in helping Sporting Alexandria win the 2022 FIBA Africa Women's Champions Cup in Maputo, Mozambique. Sporting Alexandria won their first-ever continental trophy on the back of a 5-1 record with US-born Dillard leading the Egyptian club with team-highs of 19.2 points, 4 assists while recording a 20.3 efficiency rating. Chitlango's double-double lands her Player of the Week award - by Eurobasket News
Siphiwe Chitlango put on an amazing game in the last round for league's best team Soweto P. and receives a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 7.
She had a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, while her team outclassed, the league's bottom-ranked team NC Zebras (#5, 0-1) with 26-point margin 76-50. It allowed Soweto P. to take over top position in the South African WBNL. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost that single game earlier this season. Soweto P. has a very solid 3-1 record, but they cannot be too comfortable about keeping top position. Chitlango just recently signed at Soweto P., being already a very valuable addition to the team. Chitlango has impressive league stats. She is in league's top in points (5th best: 14.8ppg), rebounds (8th best: 10.8rpg), assists (6th best: 3.0apg) and averages solid 3.0spg.

Second best performed player last round was Rachel Ngona of M.Rhinos. She is a in her first (recently joined) season at M.Rhinos. In the last game Ngona recorded impressive double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds. It was enough for M.Rhinos to edge slightly higher-ranked Tshwane S. (#3, 1-1) by 6 points 43-37. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the top position in Group A. M.Rhinos consolidated its place in top 4 of the standings. Her team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 1-2 record. Ngona is one of the most experienced players at M.Rhinos and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. She belongs to the best scorers in the league with 16.3ppg (#4). She also registered 9.0 boards per game.

Third place about best performers goes to Mamotsoari Mofokeng of NC Zebras (#5). Mofokeng scored 22 points and grabbed ten rebounds. Despite Mofokeng's great performance NC Zebras lost 50-76 to the higher-ranked Soweto P. (#1, 3-1). But her team cannot count on just a single player as she also needs help of the other teammates. The season just started for Mofokeng as she played only first game. But it already looks like she can be team's leader.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Monicah Tlou (175-F-1996) of Soweto P. - 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists
5. Monalisa Maphumulo) of Soweto P. - 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists
6. Lindokuhle Nkabini) of Soweto P. - 7 points and 15 rebounds
7. Lindani Manda) of NC Zebras - 11 points and 11 rebounds
8. Cynthia Mudau) of M.Rhinos - 5 points and 6 rebounds
9. Charmaine Amoda) of Tshwane S. - 4 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Medi Kimasi) of Soweto P. - 9 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists

The Player of the week is selected based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

The Player of the Week awards are presented by Hoops Agents. Hoops Agents is the most complete website about the agencies and players they represent. With more than twenty years of experience, Hoops Agents is already recognized as the most reliable destination for the players who wish to continue their career in professional basketball and are searching for a reputable and connected representation. Aquira Decosta (185-F-2000) put on an amazing game in the last round for league's leader Phoenix and that's her to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 2.
The 22-year old forward had a double-double of 23 points and twelve rebounds, while her team edged out Valkyrie (#8, 0-2), the league's bottom-ranked team 71-69. It allowed Phoenix to consolidate first place in the WPBA. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Phoenix won both games without losing any. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. In the team's last game Decosta had a remarkable 54.5% from 2-point range. She just recently signed at Phoenix and just after two games she already turned to be a very valuable addition to the team. Sacramento State University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Decosta is in league's top in points (6th best: 18.5ppg), rebounds (4th best: 10.5rpg) and averages solid 1.5bpg.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was point guard Brijanee Moore (175-PG) of Royals. Moore impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds. Of course Royals cruised to a 68-57 relatively comfortable win over Riptide (1-1). The season is still at the very beginning and this victory may help a lot. Let's wait for the next round. Moore is one of the most experienced players at Royals and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

The third best performed player last round was Aja Johnson (185-F/C) of Reign (#7). Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed twenty four rebounds (!!!). Despite Johnson's great performance Reign lost 61-88 to Blaze (#4, 1-1). But her team cannot count on just a single player as she also needs help of the other teammates. Reign can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. Johnson has individually a great season in WPBA. After only 2 games, she made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 19.5rpg (#1 in league).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Ashley Hart (G) of Royals - 25 points and 6 rebounds
