Six Year Wait Is Over Thunder Are ECBL Champions - by Eurobasket News
The wait is finally over for the Carolina Thunder after knocking off the defending champions Petersburg Cavaliers to secure the ultimate prize, the 2023 ECBL Championship. This season was called the redemption season after last season's upset loss in the Conference Championship. The visiting Northern Conference Champion Cavaliers came out the gate with a heavy-weight punch showing why they were the defending champs by taking an early 12 point lead leading into the media timeout of the opening quarter. At that point the Thunder inserted former defensive player of the year Daniel Quarles (6'9''-F-1986) who went straight to work on the defensive end altering or blocking numerous shots showing why he is one of the league's top rim protectors year in and year out. During this same time on the offensive end 2023 ECBL Allstar D.J. Mason (6'6''-F-1994, college: Campbell, agency: IceBasket) came up big in turning the tide hitting three straight three pointers to close the 1st quarter as the host Thunder came back to tie the game at 34 at the end of 1. A championship game is about back and forth, with runs that are made by teams especially with these two championship caliper teams. The Thunder made a change in the 2nd quarter and went to a zone and the Cavaliers struggled from the perimeter and were unable to pull the Thunder out of the zone which led to the Thunder taking a 64-49 lead going into the half. The Thunder came into the game with 9 guys averaging double figures which was a vital part of this team's success this season with all their depth. Allstar guard Busta Knox was brilliant all game scoring 20pts and dishing out 8 assists and the Thunders 3rd 2023 Allstar Scheraun King (6'3''-G-1987, college: Albany St.) scored 19 points including 3 three pointers. The Thunder also had Patrell Rogers (6'2''-G-1995, college: SC State) and Titus Gary III (5'10''-PG-1995, college: St.Andrews) adding double digits as they both added 16 points each. Everyone knew coming in both teams could score but when they say defense wins championships this ended up being a great example of that as the Thunder came away with a 126-102 win and the 2023 ECBL Champions for the 1st Time. "Coming into the game I knew the Cavs would turn the ball over based on film study. The plan was to limit their stars, make their guards shoot, and if that happened we knew we could win. Tonight all those things happened and now we've captured our very 1st championship." Owner/Coach stated after the game. Forward DJ D.J. Mason was named the Finals MVP while leading all scorers with a game-high 30 points, including 8 made three pointers.

Dennis Schroeder Will Replace Fred VanVleet In Toronto On A Two-Year, $26 Million Deal - by Eurobasket News
All things considered, Dennis Schroeder (5'11''-PG-1993)'s return to the Los Angeles Lakers went pretty well. After famously failing to agree to a lucrative extension with the team during his last stint with the team and spending the 2021-22 season with the Boston Celtics and the Houston Rockets, Schroeder put pen to paper on a 1-year deal to head back to L.A. One year later and Schroeder finds himself in a similar spot, as he is on the unrestricted free agent market and has the ability to sign with any team he wants, with the major difference being his stock is a bit higher than it was at this point last offseason. After seeing a number of big names sign early on Friday evening, Schroeder waited out the point guard market and cashed in big time when Fred VanVleet spurned the Raptors to take a three-year max in Houston. With Toronto rather desperate for a new starting point guard in their quest to stay competitive, having already re-signed Jakob Poeltl, Schroeder was able to get a 2-year, $26 million deal from the Raptors. Schroeder started in the backcourt for the Lakers during most of last season, although he lost the starting nod towards the end of the regular season and for much of the postseason as Darvin Ham preferred to start the duo of D'Angelo Russell (6'5''-SG-1996, college: Ohio St.) and Austin Reaves (6'5''-G-1998, college: Oklahoma) in the backcourt. On the year, Schroeder appeared in 66 games with 50 starts, and averaged 12.6 points and 4.5 assists in 30.1 minutes per game. Getting the full mid-level from the Raptors is a significant win for Schroeder, who has seen taking his time to get a deal backfire in the past but this time got rewarded with more money than I think most expected him to get. Toronto gets a veteran replacement they desperately needed to keep their plan of running it back from falling apart, and now go into the season with a slightly shuffled backcourt, hoping to find a spark that didn't exist a year ago.

Rui Hachimura will be staying with the Lakers on a new deal - by Eurobasket News
The Los Angeles Lakers stated through executive Rob Pelinka that their main goal in free agency this year is to retain as much of their new core as possible. That core, which was hastily cobbled together just before the trade deadline via multiple trades, was good enough to give them one of the league's best records after the All-Star break and a trip to the Western Conference finals. On Friday, the Lakers added forward Taurean Prince and guard Gabe Vincent in free agency, and both should give them tenacity, defensive versatility and, perhaps, reliable 3-point shooting. They also achieved part of their main objective when forward Rui Hachimura (6'8''-F-1998, college: Gonzaga) agreed to a three-year, $51 million contract to remain. Hachimura was one of the midseason additions that turned the season around for Los Angeles. He was inconsistent during the regular season, but he was outstanding during the playoffs, and at times, it almost seemed as if no one could slow him.

Kyrie Irving to Return to Mavericks on Three-Year, $126 Million Deal, per Report - by Eurobasket News
Kyrie Irving (6'3''-G-1992, college: Duke) will return to the Mavericks in 2023-24, signing a three-year, $126 million with the team according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Irving was originally acquired by Dallas via a trade with the Nets ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. Irving, an eight-time NBA All-Star and former NBA champion with the Cavaliers, was the top player available in free agency. Even so, his return to Dallas was largely expected, as the market for Irving, who saw his tenures with the Nets, Celtics and Cavaliers come to contentious ends, was reportedly not robust. After reports that Irving was set to meet with the Suns and could try and gauge interest from the Rockets and 76ers, he ultimately returns to Dallas on a relatively short deal early on in free agency. Dallas traded for Irving on Feb. 5 for Spencer Dinwiddie (6'6''-PG-1993, college: Colorado), Dorian Finney-Smith (6'7''-F-1993, college: Florida), a 2029 first-round pick and multiple second-round picks. In 20 games for Dallas following the deal, he averaged 27 points and six assists, shooting .510/.392/.947, but the team failed to reach the playoffs in the Western Conference.

Fred VanVleet Lands Three-Year, $130 Million Deal With Rockets, per Report - by Eurobasket News
Fred VanVleet (6'0''-PG-1994, college: Wichita St.) and the Rockets reportedly agreed to a three-year, $130 million deal, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The former Raptors star, who signs the first max contract of the summer in the NBA, was one of the Rockets' top targets in this year's market as a veteran point guard who should help a core of young stars in Houston. Earlier this month, VanVleet declined his $22.8 million player option, becoming a free agent after seven seasons in Toronto. VanVleet, an undrafted player in 2016, made a name for himself with the Raptors. After helping Toronto win an NBA championship coming off the bench in the 2018-19 season, he became a full-time starter in Toronto during the following year. VanVleet earned his first All-Star recognition in the '21-22 campaign, where he averaged 20.3 points, 6.7 assists and a career-high 4.4 rebounds per game. Last season, VanVleet averaged 19.3 points with career-highs in assists per game (7.2) and free throw percentage (89.8%) in a career-best 69 games. It was also his third consecutive season averaging no fewer than 19 points and his fourth consecutive campaign of averaging six assists. VanVleet leaves Toronto as the franchise's record holder for points (54 vs. the Magic in 2021) and assists (20 vs. the Hornets in '23) in a single game, and is third in total assists and fourth in total steals in Raptors' history.

Grizzlies Sign Former MVP Derrick Rose, per Report - by Eurobasket News
Derrick Rose (6'3''-PG-1988, college: Memphis) has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal to join the Grizzlies, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Ian Begley of SNY-TV first reported the news. Rose's deal is reportedly worth $6.5 million, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. Rose returns to Memphis 15 years after playing his lone season at the University of Memphis, where he led the Tigers on a NCAA Final Four run and an unforgettable battle in the 2008 men's national championship game against Kansas. The three-time All-Star joins the Grizzlies after spending the last three seasons with the Knicks in his second stint with the franchise. New York declined Rose's team option on June 24, allowing the guard to become a free agent. Last season, Rose averaged 5.6 points in 27 games. He has not played in more than 40 games since the 2020-21 campaign when he played for the Pistons and was later traded to the Knicks in February of that season. In the first two years of his second tenure in the Big Apple, Rose averaged double-digit points and at least four assists per game in both seasons. With Ja Morant (6'3''-G-1999, college: Murray St.) serving a 25-game suspension to start the 2023-24 season, Rose gives Memphis another option at guard alongside Marcus Smart (6'4''-G-1994, college: OK State) and Desmond Bane (6'6''-G-1998, college: TCU). But more than anything, Rose-who turns 35 in October-provides Memphis with much-needed veteran presence in the locker room for players like Morant, who has often been compared to the veteran guard. 'He really made it to where people believe in guys like me,' Morant said after a game against the Knicks in November, per the Commercial Appeal. 'Coming in, athletic guards, I felt like he was pretty much the one who kind of made it more famous. With how acrobatic his finish is, his touch around the rim, and how explosive he was. ...He was my comparison.' Shortly after the Grizzlies acquired Rose on Friday night, Morant tweeted a rose emoji in reaction to the news.

Wizards To Trade Monte Morris To Pistons - by Eurobasket News
The Wizards and Pistons have agreed to a trade that will send point guard Monte Morris (6'2''-G-1995, college: Iowa St.) to Detroit, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic. According to Omari Sankofa of The Detroit Free Press, Washington will acquire a future second-round pick in exchange for Morris. No other players will be involved in the swap, Sankofa adds. Josh Robbins of The Athletic reports that the pick will be a 2027 second-rounder. The Wizards will also create a $9.8MM trade exception - equivalent to Morris' salary - as part of the deal, per Robbins. As Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype tweets, the Wizards are facing a roster crunch, particularly in the backcourt. Moving Morris helps address both of those issues. The Wizards now have 16 players under contract and have multiple mid-sized trade exceptions after previously dealing away Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis, Gozlan notes. Morris' contract will be absorbed into Detroit's remaining cap room and the deal will be completed July 6, per ESPN's Bobby Marks. The Pistons still have the $7.8MM room exception to work with, says Marks, who adds that the Wizards are $30.5MM below the luxury tax line. A former second-round pick and Michigan native, Morris spent his first five seasons with the Nuggets before being traded to the Wizards last summer. The 28-year-old had a solid first season with Washington in 2022/23, averaging 10.3 points, 5.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds on .480/.382/.831 shooting in 62 games (61 starts, 27.3 minutes). Morris, who has been one of the league's best at taking care of the ball throughout his career, including a 5.3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio last season, is ideally used as a backup, because he's not a great defensive player. His measured, efficient approach should mesh well with a young Pistons team looking to take the next step in their rebuild. Morris is entering the final year of his contract, which explains, to some extent, the limited return the Wizards received in the deal. The fact that they were able to shed his salary without taking any on themselves must have held some appeal as well.

Heat Shipping Victor Oladipo To Thunder - by Eurobasket News
The Heat are offloading reserve shooting guard Victor Oladipo (6'4''-G-1992, college: Indiana) to the Thunder, sources inform Shams Charania of The Athletic. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets that Miami will send Oklahoma City draft compensation along with the veteran wing. The Heat, meanwhile, will net a $9.45MM trade exception by flipping his salary. Miami also still has a $4.7MM trade exception from its February deal of big man Dewayne Dedmon. Earlier this week, the injury-plagued former All-Star picked up his player option for the 2023/24 season. Oladipo tore his left knee patellar tendon during Miami's first round matchup against the bucks. As Bobby Marks of ESPN details, the Thunder will absorb Oladipo's salary into its available cap space. After the deal, Oklahoma City should still have an estimated $7.2MM in available money at its disposal, as well as the $7.8MM room exception. The club currently has 16 players under contract, and will need to make more moves to reduce its head count to 15 for its standard roster this fall. With 11 players currently signed, meanwhile, the Heat now have $172MM in committed salary. While Miami is in the luxury tax, this move shifts the team $6.5MM beneath the highly punitive second tax apron. As Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype notes, the team is in better position to use its $5MM taxpayer mid-level exception, but still may have to shed a little salary to do so. Should the 31-year-old Oladipo remain with the Thunder, it would represent his second tour of duty with the team. After being drafted by the Magic with the second overall pick out of Indiana in 2013, he spent three seasons with Orlando before being dealt to Oklahoma City in 2016. The Thunder flipped him to the Pacers as part of the Paul George trade the following summer. With the Pacers, Oladipo blossomed into a two-time All-Star thanks to a versatile scoring touch and stellar perimeter defense. His major lower body injury issues first began to plague him in Indiana, and he has since been trying to find his footing as a defense-first role player with the Rockets and Heat. During his 42 healthy regular season contests with Miami in 2022/23, the 6'4 vet averaged 10.7 PPG, 3.5 APG, 3.0 RPG and 1.4 SPG in 26.3 MPG, mostly off the Heat bench.

Kevin Love Agrees To Two-Year Deal With Heat - by Eurobasket News
Veteran power forward Kevin Love (6'10''-PF-1988, college: UCLA) is returning to the Heat on a two-year contract, according to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. The second year will include a player option. The Heat are using their non-Bird rights to re-sign Love, which will result in a $3.7MM cap hit for next season, the Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang tweets. Miami could have gone as high as $3.84MM to retain Love, so they'll get a little cap relief if the $3.7MM figure is correct. In any case, it'll be a bargain for a five-time All-Star and 34-year-old rotation player. After reaching a buyout with the Cavaliers, Love appeared in 21 regular-season games with the Heat, including 17 starts. He averaged 7.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists, though the 37% career 3-point shooter struggled from long range (29.7%). Love played 20 postseason games with Miami, including 18 starts, and produced an average of 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 17 minutes. His 3-point shooting perked up to his usual level (37.5%). While it remains to be seen how the rest of the Heat's roster moves shake out, Love will likely be a starter or key second-unit player once again for the defending Eastern Conference champions.

Nuggets To Re-Sign Reggie Jackson, DeAndre Jordan - by Eurobasket News
The defending champion Nuggets are bringing back two of their free agent veterans. Point guard Reggie Jackson (6'3''-PG-1990, college: Boston Coll.) is staying in Denver on a two-year, $10.25MM deal, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets. Jackson's new contract will feature a second-year player option, Charania adds. Center DeAndre Jordan (6'11''-C-1988, college: Texas A&M) has also reached an agreement to remain with the Nuggets, Chris Haynes of TNT and the Bleacher Report tweets. Jackson, 33, has been in the league since 2011. He appeared in 16 regular-season games and six postseason contests for Denver after signing with the franchise as a free agent. He was bought out and waived by the Hornets after he was dealt by the Clippers at the trade deadline.
Jackson started 38 of 52 games for the Clippers prior to the trade. Denver has younger backcourt options off the bench behind Jamal Murray and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, most notably Christian Braun and Peyton Watson, but Jackson won't simply be an insurance policy. The Nuggets, who lost Bruce Brown to the Pacers in free agency, are hopeful that Jackson can be more effective with a full offseason and training camp to adjust to their system and personnel, Harrison Wind of DNVR Sports tweets. His salary could also come handy in a potential trade down the road, Wind adds.
Jordan didn't play much for the Nuggets - 39 regular-season appearances and four playoff cameos - but he's a highly-respected locker room and bench voice. He averaged 5.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in those regular-season games. He'll be the third - or even fourth - option behind franchise player Nikola Jokic.

Jerami Grant Signs Five-Year, $160 Million Deal to Return to Trail Blazers, per Report - by Eurobasket News
Jerami Grant (6'8''-F-1994, college: Syracuse) has reportedly agreed to a five-year, $160 million deal to return to the Trail Blazers, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports also reported that Grant's fifth year in the new deal served as a main reason why he was unable to secure an extension with the franchise before free agency. Cameron Johnson agrees to return to Nets on 4-year, $108M deal - by Eurobasket News
Restricted free agent forward Cameron Johnson (6'9''-F-1996, college: UNC), a key part of the blockbuster trade that sent Kevin Durant to Phoenix, has agreed on a four-year, $108 million deal to stay with the Brooklyn Nets, his agents Steven Heumann and Ty Sullivan of CAA Basketball told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday. Johnson, 27, figures to be a core piece of the Nets' rebuild moving forward. Johnson plays a coveted role in the NBA as a rangy forward who can guard opposing big wings while stretching the floor on offense -- he's a career 39.3% 3-point shooter on 5.6 attempts per game. A knee injury sidelined Johnson for more than two months to open last season but he played nearly every game after his trade to Brooklyn, averaging 16.6 points in 30.8 minutes per game. Johnson is close friends with Mikal Bridges, who was also a part of the Durant trade. Both are set to play for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup in the Philippines this summer.

Bucks, Khris Middleton agree to three-year, $102 million deal - by Eurobasket News
Three-time All-Star Khris Middleton (6'8''-SF-1991, college: Texas A&M) has agreed on a new three-year, $102 million deal to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks, his agents Mike Lindeman and Jeff Schwartz told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday. Middleton declined his $40 million player option for next season earlier in the summer to become a free agent. Injuries have plagued Middleton since the 2022 playoffs, when he missed Milwaukee's final 10 playoff games with a sprained MCL. He then needed left wrist surgery last offseason, which kept him sidelined for the first 20 games of the 2022-23 season. He returned on Dec. 2, 2022, and played six of seven games before missing 18 straight with right knee soreness. Middleton, who turns 32 in August, underwent successful surgery on his right knee shortly after Milwaukee's first-round exit in the 2023 playoffs to address that lingering issue. He averaged nearly 24 points and 6.2 assists in that series, a five-game loss to the Miami Heat. In 2021-22, Middleton's last fully healthy season, he averaged 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists and was named to his third All-Star team. Middleton has been with the Bucks for 10 seasons, transforming from role player to All-Star and one of the faces of the franchise alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. Wizards, Kyle Kuzma Agree To Four-Year Contract - by Eurobasket News
The Wizards and forward Kyle Kuzma (6'9''-F-1995, college: Utah) have agreed to a four-year, $102MM deal that will keep him in Washington, agent Austin Brown tells Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Kuzma is coming off a career year, averaging 21.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists on .448/.333/.730 shooting in 64 games last season (35.0 minutes). His points, assists and minutes per game all represented career highs. A former late first-round pick (27th overall in 2017), Kuzma won a championship with the Lakers in 2019/20, having spent his first four seasons in Los Angeles. He was sent to the Wizards in the summer of 2021 as part of the Russell Westbrook trade. It's an interesting transaction for both Kuzma and the Wizards, who have drastically remade their roster after trading Bradley Beal (to Phoenix) and Kristaps Porzingis (to Boston). Kuzma was looking for a major payday after declining his $13MM player option for 2023/24, and he found a nine-figure deal to remain with Washington. Kuzma, alongside former Warriors guard Jordan Poole (whom the team acquired for Chris Paul), figures to be a major part of the Wizards' offense in '23/24. When engaged, he's also a solid defensive player, and is still developing in other areas. Still, it remains to be seen whether or not Kuzma will be in Washington's long-term plans. The team's front office - led by president Michael Winger - was completely revamped, so time will tell how they'll choose to build out the roster.

Draymond Green staying with Warriors on a new 4-year deal - by Eurobasket News
Draymond Green (6'6''-F-1990, college: Michigan St.) is sticking around to chase more championships with the Golden State Warriors after agreeing to a new $100 million, four-year contract, a person with direct knowledge of the agreement said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday as the NBA's free agency period began because the deal can't be finalized until the moratorium period ends. The fourth year is at Green's option. Green had said he wanted to remain with the Warriors for the rest of his career playing alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson - a trio that has captured four titles together starting in 2015. Green opted out of a $27.6 million contract for 2023-24 to seek a long-term deal. New Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said at his introductory news conference June 19 that the organization was committed to keeping the fiery forward, who began last season by punching Jordan Poole during a training camp practice before taking a short leave of absence. Poole was traded to Washington earlier in this offseason, in a move that brings veteran Chris Paul to the Warriors. Paul is under contract for just this coming season; Poole is entering a four-year deal that'll pay him an average of more than $30 million annually, so that move was done in large part to give the Warriors future financial flexibility - needed by the rules of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement agreement that goes into effect Saturday. The Warriors missed out defending their 2022 championship with a loss to LeBron James and the Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals after getting by Sacramento in a seven-game first-round series. Green was suspended for a Game 3 win against the Kings after stepping on the chest of Domantas Sabonis during a Game 2 defeat. The Warriors became the first defending champion to rally from an 0-2 deficit to win a playoff series.

Trey Lyles, Kings Reportedly Agree to 2-Year, $16M Contract in 2023 NBA Free Agency - by Eurobasket News
Free agent forward Trey Lyles (6'9''-SF-1995, college: Kentucky) has reportedly reached an agreement to return to the Sacramento Kings, per Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. The 6'9" Lyles averaged 7.6 points on 45.8 percent shooting (36.3 percent from three-point range). and 4.1 rebounds in 16.9 minutes per game last season. He helped the Kings reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The eight-year NBA veteran has played for the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons and Kings. He has averaged 7.8 points on 44.3 percent shooting (34.2 percent from three) and 4.3 rebounds for his career. The 27-year-old landed with the Kings as part of a four-team trade between them, the Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers in Feb. 2022. He started 20 of 24 games for Sacramento in 2021-22 before moving full time to a bench role the following season. Ultimately, Lyles is a high-energy player who can stretch the floor and provide valuable minutes off the bench. He'll be a great bench asset for Sacramento as it looks to improve upon last season.

Caris LeVert re-signs with Cavs, who are bullish on his two-way impact - by Eurobasket News
Going into the offseason, one of the key questions looming for the Cleveland Cavaliers appeared to be would Caris LeVert (6'7''-G-1994, college: Michigan) be brought back? In the same wavelength was would LeVert maybe take a bit less to re-sign? LeVert did not have nearly the impact of some thought he would in the closing stretch of the 2021-22 season for the Cavaliers after he was acquired via trade from the Indiana Pacers near the 2022 Deadline. A foot injury came at an unfortunate time, and he was not able to get into much of a rhythm. In the 2022-23 campaign, to his credit, LeVert had a much better overall effect for Cleveland in his minutes, conversely. In the beginning stretch of the year, he had some issues offensively in finding his way in minutes with Darius Garland and new trade arrival Donovan Mitchell, and eventually, LeVert moved to mostly a bench role. He was fully on-board with that, too, and for much of the season from then on, his two-way impact on games proved to be crucial. Now, LeVert did not necessarily light it up from a scoring perspective for the season altogether, in fairness. He had 12.1 points per game, which was his second-lowest point per game average of his career, and the lowest since his second season with the Brooklyn Nets in 2016-17. Despite some offensive inconsistencies as a scorer in a general sense, particularly inside the arc, LeVert did knock in a career-best 39.2 percent of his three-point attempts, and a career-best in threes made. Plus, he still tacked on his career averages with 3.9 assists and 3.8 rebounds per contest. LeVert's defense was a pleasant surprise, too, and it was great to see him for the most part healthy for Cleveland, as he was active in 74 games in 2022-23. So, with his impact on winning games for Cleveland, it was nice to see the news that he and the Cavaliers agreed that he'd come back right as NBA Free Agency was underway. Per a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, LeVert/his representation and the Cavs agreed to terms on a two-year deal for $32 million. Cleveland had Bird Rights for LeVert, which had to have played into the compensation amount, and with both sides reportedly having mutual interest, this wasn't too much of a shock. LeVert got increasingly better as the season wore on, and he grew more comfortable in his role for Cleveland. There were some ups and downs for LeVert in Cleveland's disappointing first round playoff loss to the New York Knicks, sure, but he did still have his moments, and was a bright spot at points then. What's crucial for the Cavs, ultimately, is having LeVert be all the more acclimated to a key bench role, though. Once that was commonplace for him, he seemed to be in a better rhythm, and in instances when LeVert has things rolling, he could be a viable closing unit player. We'll have to see if that continues from here, of course. As we also alluded to, LeVert's defensive play was a pleasant surprise last season, and even with his scoring inconsistencies, his ball pressure, defensive playmaking impact with his active hands and his hustle all were constants. Moving forward, whether or not LeVert is starting or in a bench role, the latter of which seems more regularly likely, the Cavaliers are going to need LeVert to make his presence felt defensively on the perimeter, too. Hopefully, what he contributed on that end can be the standard in these years to come. Now, hopefully, LeVert can find some more consistency on offense as a scorer next season and the year following, which doesn't seem unreasonable, given he'll be much better acclimated with the Cavaliers. It would only help LeVert for the Cavs to add a couple of impact offensive weapons and namely perimeter shooters for the rotation, which could go a long way for LeVert's driving and slashing, to go with his playmaking for stretches. In that realm, Cleveland seems well in line to acquire the likes of Max Strus via sign-and-trade, given recent rumors, and Georges Niang, who has been linked to the Cavs as a possible free agency signing, could give the bench a lift, too. Further, longtime NBA Insider Marc Stein reported how it's'increasingly likely' Strus and Niang will be Cavaliers soon enough. Overall, though, it's reassuring for Cleveland that LeVert, who will be entering his age-29 season in 2023-24, is back. If he can remain mostly healthy in coming seasons, he should help in a variety of ways.

Tall Ferns beaten in Fiba Asia Cup semifinals by ruthless Japan - by Eurobasket News
The Tall Ferns' pursuit of a maiden Fiba Asia Cup title has come to an end after a crushing 88-52 loss to defending champions Japan in Sydney. Despite putting up a determined effort, the youthful New Zealanders were outclassed by a ruthless Japanese outfit at Sydney Olympic Park, receiving a harsh lesson at both ends of the court. Stephanie Mawuli (182-C-1998) (17 points, six rebounds) and Monica Okoye (182-C/F-1999) (16 points) led the way for the Olympic silver medallists, who will meet either China or Australia in Sunday's final as they shoot for their sixth successive Asian Cup title. After Charlisse Leger-Walker (178-G-2001, college: WSU) uncharacteristically missed an early opportunity to put the Tall Ferns in front, Japan largely dominated the opening quarter, racing out to a 24-11 lead against the shell-shocked Kiwis, who seemed slightly overawed by the occasion. However, having struggled to penetrate Japan's smothering defence in that first period, the Tall Ferns came out swinging in the second after a pep talk from coach Guy Molloy . The outstanding Leger-Walker found her range and nailed a three-pointer from distance, while Ritorya Tamilo (192-C-2005) also got in on the act as the Kiwis briefly closed the gap on the scoreboard to a more respectable eight points. Yet the Tall Ferns couldn't sustain that fightback for long and when Japan reintroduced their big guns off the bench, they quickly piled on the points with some inspired offensive play that at times had the world No 29 side chasing shadows. Japan shaded the quarter by 23-14 to head into the halftime break with a huge 47-25 advantage. It could have been slightly closer, had Krystal Leger-Walker (175-G-1997, college: WSU) not been cruelly denied an audacious three-pointer by the buzzer, but the Tall Ferns still had an uphill task if they were to reach their first-ever final. It was more of the same in the third quarter, as a tiring New Zealand side squandered multiple opportunities and were repeatedly hit with time violations in the face of some fierce Japanese defence. In attack, the reigning champions continued to show no mercy as they entered the final quarter with a 28-point lead. With the result a formality, New Zealand went for broke in the last 10-minute period, but Japan still closed strongly to record a resounding 88-52 victory. US college phenom Leger-Walker was again the Tall Ferns' standout, top-scoring with 14 points. Tahlia Tupaea (175-G-1997) was next best with 12. Japan will be red-hot favourites to retain their title, having humbled hosts Australia 91-66 in their previous game. They also thrashed the Philippines (95-57) and Chinese Taipei (94-53) en route to the semifinals. The eight-team regional tournament doubles as qualifying for next year's Olympics, with the four semifinalists qualifying for Paris 2024. With the commanding victory over New Zealand, the Japanese have now gone 17 games unbeaten across four Asia Cups, their last loss coming against Australia in the group phase of the 2017 tournament.
