USA defeat powerhouse Latvia at FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023 - by Eurobasket News
It was Jimmer-Mania in Vienna as Team USA picked up a statement win in their opener against Latvia in the group stages of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023. A repeat of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023 Gold medal game, the American side made sure history repeated itself. The dynamic duo of Karlis Lasmanis (200-G-1994) and Nauris Miezis (190-G-1991) tried to will the Latvian side through, but just couldn't get a rhythm going against the constant pressure from USA. It was a team effort to start the game off. Canyon Barry did not let Latvia breathe on offense, stuffing down every action, not to mention finding himself on the strong end of a few highlight plays. Kareem Maddox (202-F/C-1989, college: Princeton) and Dylan Travis (190-G-1993, college: FSC) showed out, displaying that hustle to keep the momentum in Team USA's favor. After an initial feeling out process for the former NBA star in his World Cup debut, Jimmer Fredette (188-G-1989, college: BYU) absolutely took over, launching huge twos from deep. If that wasn't enough, he started cooking from mid-range, draining crazy fadeaways to call game against Latvia. Team USA will be looking to ride that confidence all the way to the gold and an opportunity to hoop in Paris next year while Latvia have work to do to find their groove. Day 2 action rolls on with both teams taking to court again among many other games.

Experienced Brayan Martinez (203-SG-1991) had a very impressive game in the last round for league's leader Caneros and that's him to receive a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 5.
The 31-year old shooting guard had a double-double of 26 points and ten rebounds, while his team beat Metros (#7, 1-8) 83-77. It allowed Caneros to jump to the first place in the Dominican Rep. LNB. They would have been even better if they did not have these two lost games earlier in Regular Season. Caneros has a very solid 7-2 record, but they cannot be too comfortable about keeping top position. In the team's last game Martinez had a remarkable 80.0% from 2-point range. He just recently signed at Caneros, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Brayan Martinez averages this season 14.2ppg and 6.6rpg.

He was a key player of Leones, leading his team to a 104-80 easy win against #2 ranked Reales in a game of the week. Leones needs these victories very badly if they think about getting closer to top teams. Their record at this point is 6 victories and 3 lost games. Perez has a great season in Dominican Republic. After only 7 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 10.4ppg (2nd best) and assists with 1.0apg (7th best).

Coach Monty Williams has agreed to a six-year, $78.5 million contract with the Detroit Pistons, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. It is the largest coaching deal in NBA history. Williams, 51, was fired by the Phoenix Suns earlier in May after four seasons as their coach. The move came after the Suns were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals. Williams, who was named NBA Coach of the Year in May 2022, was 194-115 (.628) in the regular season and 27-19 in the playoffs for Phoenix. The Suns won a franchise-record 64 games in 2021-22 and reached the NBA Finals in 2021. In Detroit, Williams will replace Dwane Casey, who stepped down as the Pistons' coach in April to move into a front-office role. Casey had coached Detroit since 2018, but in five seasons the team went 121-263 (.315). Detroit made the playoffs once during his tenure, in 2018-19, but was swept in the first round. The Pistons have gone seven straight campaigns without finishing over .500. Their last winning season was in 2015-16. Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, selected No. 5 and No. 13, respectively, in the 2022 NBA draft, did provide hope for the future with their play last season for Detroit. Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 pick overall in 2021, had his second season stunted by shin surgery after playing in only 12 games. Bojan Bogdanovic, who averaged a career-high 21.6 points, Isaiah Stewart, James Wiseman and Marvin Bagley are expected to be back. The Pistons hold the No. 5 overall pick in June's NBA draft.

Coleman Hawkins, Terrence Shannon Jr. returning to Illinois - by Eurobasket News
Illinois power forward Coleman Hawkins (6'10''-F-2001) is withdrawing from the NBA draft and returning to school for his senior season, he told ESPN on Wednesday. "The reasoning behind going back is just feeling more comfortable with the start of my NBA journey," Hawkins said. "I would have been a draft pick, but regarding the contracts, two-way deals -- nothing is guaranteed with those. Having another year of school would allow me to have a better start to my NBA career, hopefully getting a first-round, guaranteed contract." The return of Hawkins -- one of the most versatile big men in college basketball who led Illinois in rebounding, assists and blocks -- caps off an important day for the Illini, who also saw their leading scorer, Terrence Shannon Jr. (6'6''-G-2000) announce his intention to return to Champaign. Hawkins, previously the No. 54 prospect in ESPN's draft rankings, intrigued NBA teams with his ability to initiate his team's offense at 6-foot-10 on one end, defend point guards on the other and knock down 3-pointers when operating off the ball, giving him unique versatility for the modern game. Scouts will want to see him find more consistency with his outside shot (28% on 3-pointers), continue to add bulk to his 224-pound frame and become a more consistent player on both ends of the floor to ultimately be worthy of being a first-round pick in 2024, which Hawkins says is his goal for next season. "NBA teams say they want me to be more aggressive," Hawkins said. "Teams have mentioned confidence. Playing with amnesia. Forgetting about missed shots and just play my game. I am an elite shooter, but I didn't show that last year, so being more consistent with that will be important." Hawkins, the Illini's third-leading scorer, will again pair up with Shannon, who transferred from Texas Tech last summer, for a second season at Illinois, hoping to build on last year's campaign in which the team went 11-9 in the Big Ten and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The team also returns starting center Dain Dainja, versatile wing Ty Rodgers, shooter Luke Goode, combo guard Sencire Harris and reeled in several transfers in Southern Illinois' Marcus Domask, Oregon's Quincy Guerrier and Utah Valley's Justin Harmon, along with four-star freshmen Amani Hansberry and Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn. "I anticipate better dynamics and a better understanding of how we play," Hawkins said. "We'll come together more as a team. Last year we had a lot of new guys, freshmen and young guys. We have a better idea now of how to win. The goal is to compete for another Big Ten title, which would be my third one in four years here, that's my goal."

Cousins number one in Puerto Rico BSN for week 34 - by Eurobasket News

American DeMarcus Cousins (211-C/F-1990) had a great game in the last week for second-ranked Guaynabo, receiving a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for week 34.
The 32-year old player had a double-double of 31 points and 12 rebounds, while his team edged out Bayamon (#1, 18-11) 101-100. Guaynabo maintains the 2nd position in their group in Puerto Rican BSN. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Guaynabo will need more victories to improve their 17-12 record. In the team's last game Cousins had a remarkable 60.0% from 2-point range and got four three-pointers out of 7 attempts. He just recently signed at Guaynabo, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Former University of Kentucky star has very solid stats this year. Cousins is in league's top in points (4th best: 21.1ppg), rebounds (3rd best: 10.2rpg) and averages impressive 1.4bpg,58.8% FGP and 42.9% from behind 3-point line.

The second best player in last week's games was young American Hassan Whiteside (213-C-1989) of league's leader Quebradillas. Whiteside had a very good evening with a double-double of 30 points and 17 rebounds. Bad luck as Quebradillas lost that game 84-89 to the lower-ranked Mayaguez (#4, 12-17). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the top position in Group A. Quebradillas still maintains its place as the top team in the standings, even despite this loss. His team has currently 19-8 record. Whiteside is one of the most experienced players at Quebradillas and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 21.8ppg (#3). He also registered 14.1 boards per game.

Third on the list of top players last week was American forward DJ Hogg (203-F-1996) of Mayaguez (#4). Hogg showcased his all-around game by recording 25 points, five rebounds and seven assists in the last week. He was a key player of Mayaguez, leading his team to a 89-84 win against #1 ranked Quebradillas. The chances of Mayaguez ranking at the top of Group A, however are very questionable as they have already lost 17 games, recording just twelve victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Hogg could help Mayaguez to bring them higher in the standings. Hogg has a very solid season. In 11 games in Puerto Rico he scored 21.9ppg. He also has 6.0rpg, 3.4apg, 1.4bpg and FGP: 53.8%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Jezreel De Jesus (185-G-1991) of Ponce - 11 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists
5. Cheick Diallo (206-C/F-1996) of Santurce - 25 points and 11 rebounds
6. Ismael Romero (205-C-1991) of Bayamon - 23 points and 10 rebounds
7. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (201-F-1995) of San German - 21 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists
8. Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (186-G-1998) of Mayaguez - 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists
9. Angel Rodriguez (180-PG-1992) of Bayamon - 18 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists
10. Victor Liz (190-SG-1986) of Arecibo - 18 points and 12 rebounds

Women News
Hosts Austria shine, China make a statement on Day 2 of FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023 - by Eurobasket News
Hosts Austria (men) put on an unbelievable display while China (women) continue on recent momentum as both teams go perfect on Day 2 of the Vienna FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023 on May 31.

THE TEAMS
The Rathausplatz was rocking every time Austria stepped onto the court, and the team returned the favor by picking up two hugely entertaining wins. First taking on Slovenia, it took no time for the passion of Nico Kaltenbrunner (192-G-2000) to drive his team forward, getting crucial boards and buckets for his team as they picked up a 21-15 win. Matthias Linortner (197-SF-1997) was the star though, combining for a total of 17 points over both games, none more important than the deep dagger in the dying seconds against Australia to finish the comeback in front of the roaring Vienna crowd. They got the second win with a score of 17-15.
Team USA showed out too, going unbeaten against Latvia and Australia. The opening game was the Jimmer show, going off for 11 points to lead his side to a 21-17 W. The tie against Australia was total team effort, with all four contributing heavily to pick up a huge 21-18 victory.
On the women's side, it would come as no surprise that the team that's been dominating in the Women's Series over the past few weeks would come on out to Vienna and put on a clinic. China showed no mercy to their opponents, winning both their games by huge margins no less. The first tie against Israel gave us a glimpse at MVP Wan JiYuan (185-C-2002)g as she put up 12 points to close the game out, 21 - 4. The game against Lithuania showed us the gritty side of China. When their offense wasn't clicking, they resorted to using their physicality to gain control. Wan JiYuan got the buckets while Lili Wan JiYuang (170-SG-1992) and Zhi Ting Zhang picked up the boards, pulling away with a 17 - 7 win.
Another team that has been consistently strong in recent weeks has been Australia. Forming one of the most complete sides in the tournament, they played in the same fashion, going perfect on the day. Despite the pace of Japan, the Australian side had no trouble taking care of business as Marena Whittle (180-G-1994, college: NDSU, agency: LBM Management) and Alex Wilson (181-G-1994) combined for 19 points in the game, winning 22 - 11. Their game against Lithuania was no different. A tandem offensive effort from Whittle and Anneli Maley (187-G/F-1998, college: TCU) sealed the deal in the favor of the Aussies as they won 21-14.

THE PLAYERS
Italy's Raelin D'Alie (159-PG-1987, college: Wisconsin, agency: LBM Management) showcased her speed and acumen, picking up 9 points in a 20 - 15 win against Romania. It was the second game however, where she REALLY took off. With a close game in play against Lithuania, Rae Rae went deep in her bag and drained huge twos, forcing OT. With the next point deciding the game, she pulled off an exquisite step-through to lead her side to a perfect Day 2.
On his 3x3 World Cup debut, Netherland's Worthy de Jong (194-G-1988) brought the vibes and the highlights. Slams, steals and game winning twos. Worthy went off in both games against Mongolia and Japan. You gotta see it to believe it.

Day 3
The elimination rounds start taking shape tomorrow as the deciding games for group C and group A take place. You don't wanna miss the action.

CHILE
LNF Round 8 of Regular Season - by Eurobasket News
Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

LNF round 8 most important game was a victory of Sergio Ceppi over their close opponent Puente Alto 67-54 on Thursday night. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Puente Alto. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Sergio Ceppi forced 23 Puente Alto turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The former international forward Paula Munoz (174-1990) orchestrated the victory by scoring 19 points and 5 assists. The former international Florencia Colossi (168-1998) contributed with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners. The former international center Claudia Silva (193-1989) replied with 16 points for Puente Alto. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sergio Ceppi maintains second position with 6-1 record having just 2 victories less than leader CDSC, which they share with Frontera. Puente Alto at the other side dropped to the third place with two games lost. They share the position with Infinito. Sergio Ceppi's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Santiago Brisas.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Concepcion: Univ.Concepcion (#1) and Laja (#7). Laja was smashed at home by 65 points 33-98 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. Worth to mention a great performance of Daniela Ojeda who helped to win the game recording 17 points and 7 assists and Constanza Ruminot who added 8 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. Stefani Sandoval responded with 4 points and 15 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Univ.Concepcion (6-0) have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with a perfect record of 6 victories in a row, which they share with Alemana P. Laja at the other side still closes the standings with six games lost. They share the position with Larr Valdivia and Luis ML. Univ.Concepcion will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Laja will play at home against Temuco (#4) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
Another interesting game was again a derby between two local teams from Temuco: Frontera (#2) and Temuco (#4). Frontera (6-1) smashed visiting Temuco (4-3) by 26 points 87-61. The winners were led by Josefina Viafora who scored that evening 14 points and 8 rebounds. Even a double-double of 24 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) by Jessica Martino did not help to save the game for Temuco. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Frontera maintains second position with 6-1 record having just 2 victories less than leader CDSC, which they share with Sergio Ceppi. Loser Temuco keeps the fourth place with three games lost. Frontera will meet at home Conce (#6) in the next round. Temuco will play against Laja in Concepcion and hope to secure a win.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 8: New Crusaders was beaten by Sportiva Ita. on the road 78-65. Brisas destroyed Tomas L on its own court 93-64. Winless Rancagua was outscored by Univ.de Chile in Santiago 71-28. Truenos rolled over Conce at home 75-56. Osorno was defeated by Univ. Austral on the opponent's court 57-41. Alemana P. smashed Pankull in a home game 79-43. Winless Larr Valdivia was destroyed by Puerto Montt on the road 89-51. Puente Alto lost to undefeated CDSC on its own court 59-75.

Colombian LSBF round 5 best performance: Eshaya Murphy - by Eurobasket News

LSBFw
sponsor
Montenegrin-American Swingman Eshaya Murphy (181-G/F-1985) had a very impressive game in the last round for top-ranked Bucaros, receiving a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 5.
The 37-year old player was the main contributor (21 points, seven rebounds and three assists) to her team's victory, helping them to outclass, the league's bottom-ranked team Casanare (#4, 0-3) with 44-point margin 78-34. It allowed Bucaros to consolidate first place in the Colombian LSBF. They maintain a perfect record without any lost game in the league. The season is still on an early stage, but Bucaros already had a very good start winning all 3 without losing a single one. In the team's last game Murphy had a remarkable three three-pointers out of 6 attempts. She just recently signed at Bucaros and just after two games she already turned to be a very valuable addition to the team. Eshaya Murphy averages just after two games 24.5ppg and 9.0rpg.

The second best player in last round's games was young Angely Mendez (175-C-2000) of Caqueta. Mendez had a very good evening with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists. Bad luck as Caqueta was edged by Center's leader Bogota (#4, 1-0) 58-54. This loss caused Caqueta to drop to 5th position in Center. 5 lost games are too many comparing to just one victory Caqueta managed to get this year. Mendez is one of the most experienced players at Caqueta and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

Third on the list of top players last round was another Caqueta's star - Mederith Venner. Venner scored 12 points and grabbed fifteen rebounds (!!!). Despite Venner's great performance Caqueta lost 54-58 to the league's current leader Bogota (#4, 1-0). But her team cannot count on just these two top stars as they also need help of the other teammates. Venner has individually a great season in Colombia. After only 6 games, she made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 10.3rpg (2nd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Yuliany Paz (195-F-2000) of Indeportes - 12 points and 12 rebounds
5. Esther Palmera (F-2000) of Bucaros - 14 points and 9 rebounds
6. Juliana Castro (160-PG-2004) of Huila - 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists
7. Carolina Raga) of Soacha - 14 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Stephany Mayo (180-F/C-1993) of Bucaros - 9 points and 10 rebounds
9. Wendy Coy (178-F/C-1998) of Guerreros - 13 points and 6 rebounds
10. Leidy Montano (173-F-2004) of Cundinamarca - 14 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists

GAMES OF THE SMALL STATES OF EUROPE
Montenegro outgun hosting Malta - by Eurobasket News
While Malta's women enjoyed an early triumph against Cyprus on Tuesday, Angela Adamoli struggled on Day Two of the basketball event with a low-scoring afternoon. Amber Melgoza, who had put up 32 points on her debut, could only muster around half as she nonetheless led Malta's scoring with 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists. The usually free-scoring Stephanie De Martino managed just five points on Wednesday but grabbed eight boards. Unlike Malta which had just one double-digit scorer on the afternoon, Montenegro had Marija Lekovic (170-PG-2003) put up 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Milica Jovanovic (189-F-1989) added 12 and six rebounds. Bozica Mujovic (178-G-1996) rounded the double-digits as she scored 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Bojana Kovacevic (191-F/C-1996) made her own statement with 12 rebounds. It looked like it was about to be another Malta show when Josephine Diaby fired in a three-ball to open the game's scoring and Melgoza hit a jumpshot three to put Malta up by six. But Montenegro remained composed and began to hit back. Melgoz managed four more buckets with Ashleigh Van Vliet (180-SG-1990) and De Martino hitting a layup each to close the first quarter. The second quarter will definitely be a concerning factor of Wednesday's loss as Malta only managed two points as Montenegro scored 12 in a very low scoring 10 minutes and the halftime stoppage would have come as a welcome moment to reflect. The Montenegrins kept up their power in the second half as Jovanovic was the most dangerous player on the court with eight points scored in the third quarter. The fourth quarter held no bearing on the result as the gap between the two teams stuck to around 15 points from each other as Montenegro took the win.
