BUPA Luxol and Mellieha Libertas reach Louis Borg Cup final - by Eurobasket News
The Louis Borg Cup semi-finals, played over two legs in the space of 48 hours, had their interesting moments. The closest series was that between BUPA Luxol and Starlites Fijo with the Violets managing to win both games, albeit with a tight margin, to oust Starlites. In the other tie, Melliea took control of the second game against Depiro to book their place in the final to be played in mid-March.

BUPA Luxol 163 Starlites Fijo 156
Fresh from their Shield success a few days earlier, Starlites Fijo looked like they were on track to impose their rhythm when they closed the first quarter of the first game with an 11-0 run which led them to a double-figure lead with Darius George (201-F, college: Marshall) and Ian Felice Pace netting a trey and a brace of hoops respectively. The Naxxar side kept the upper edge for a number of minutes in the second quarter but late first half treys from Jean Paul Schembri and Matthew Sciberras (178-SF-2005), in between a brace of Tayler Mattos close-range buckets, helped Luxol to recover lost ground and bring the game at par, 40-40, at the interval. With Trevian Bell (201-G/F, college: Lewis) and Nikola Vasovic combining from outside the zone and Mattos continuing to be a threat under the boards, Luxol managed to forge ahead, 67-55. Starlites' reaction at the start of the final quarter had them close the margin after points off George and an Alec Felice Pace long-ranger. Luxol, however, kept their focus and managed to defend their lead as they surged 77-69 after a series of free throws. Zekiah Owens (197-G/F-1998, college: AIC) and Jacob Bates pushed hard for a Starlites recovery and a Bates trey made it 80-81 only for Bell to close the first encounter with two free throws to help his side go for the second game enjoying a slender three-point advantage. Thus, it was all to play for 48 hours later. Finally it was Luxol who managed to thwart all Starlites' efforts throughout the game and a 9-0 run, early in the final quarter proved quite influential as Luxol moved to a double-digit lead at that juncture and piled on the pressure on their opponents. The latter did manage to close off the deficit to a single point but could never erase the aggregate deficit. Despite committing far more turnovers than their opponents, Luxol shot with better accuracy and also won the rebounds game 51-38 with veteran Marko Matijevic (200-F-1978) contributing a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards as well as four assists in 23 minutes of play. Mattos was more of an offensive threat in the second half on his way to a 26 point game, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals whilst guard Trevian Bell also had a double-double with 50% shooting and 20 points together with 10 boards, five assists and two steals. Yet, it was Starlites who had the better start as they raced to a 14-9 lead with captain Felice Pace well on song in the first rubber. He ended with 21 points and three steals. Back-to-back treys from Vasovic helped Luxol to come at par and then it was a tit-for-tat game until the interval with Starlites banging points off their trio of import players Bates, George and Owens, all of them ending with double figures. The third quarter was no different as the two sides practically neutralized each other even if Luxol enjoyed most of the lead. Then first five minutes of the final quarter were characterized with a 15-4 Luxol run, including nine points without a reply and a brace of Bell three balls. This run upped Luxol's morale to a high as they now were banking on a healthy aggregate lead. Starlites did not throw in the towel and made a last effort and gradually gnawed away at the deficit to arrive to 74-75 in the final minute. Bell kept his cool and banged in two sets of free throws to seal his team's win.

Melliea Libertas 188 Depiro 152
In game one, a fourth-quarter 12-0 streak was the first turning point in this series as here Mellieha opened an 87-72 lead after that Depiro had battled hard in the first three quarters of the game. In fact, early treys from Cameron Cornelius and Sean Galea set them going to a 12-4 sixth-minute lead. Centre Kameron Rooks (216-C-1995, college: SDSU) had quite a strong performance with a big tally of 25 rebounds and 26 points together with four blocked shots. The Mtarfa side were unlucky to see their captain Andrew Aquilina leave the court injured, which also had him out from game two, whilst Miguel Brincat (165-F-2002) was excluded from the game. Melliea recovered to come up level with their opponents with Sebastian Valencia potting 10 consecutive points, including two treys. The Colombian centre had 33 points hitting 5 from ten three-point attempts. The northerners also had the return of American Connor Zinaich (201-F-1997, college: Nova SE) who closed off game one with a double-double with 11 boards added to his 27 points as well as a poker of assists and blocked shots. There were a number of lead changes in the second quarter with Depiro having more time in front until Mellieha had a seven-point run which saw them go 60-54 ahead. Depiro were quick to recover and the next minutes saw Libertas maintaining a very slender lead until Zinaich went on a personal 10 point stretch and helped his side to move 87-72 ahead with two minutes to go. Depiro managed to reduce the deficit by half with the game's last seven points. A brace of Nenad Bukva (185-G) buckets and a Robert Bonnici (1994) trey set off Melliea in the second game. Zinaich continued shortly afterwards to set off Depiro's improved efforts and lead Melliea to a 28-21 first-quarter lead. The Mtarfa side tried their best to penetrate Melliea's defence yet the latter did not fail to hit back as well and managed also, with also a good rotation of all their players, to increase their lead a bit more by the interval for 49-36. With the outcome of the series seemingly already decided, the second half was an open affair with both sides having their moments. Rooks had another high-scoring game with 36 points and 26 rebounds and three blocks. On the otherhand Cornelius just missed on a double-double with 11 points and nine boards as well as four assists. As regards assists, Melliea's David Bugeja (180-SG-1992) amassed 16 assists over these two games.

Giannis returns, Bucks beat Nets 118-104 for 15th straight - by Eurobasket News
Giannis Antetokounmpo (6'11''-F-1994, agency: Octagon Europe) had 33 points and 15 rebounds, and the Milwaukee Bucks extended their winning streak to 15 games by beating the Brooklyn Nets 118-104 on Tuesday night. Jrue Holiday (6'4''-G-1990, college: UCLA) had 14 points and eight assists for the Bucks, who went 10-0 in February and have passed the Boston Celtics for the best record in the NBA. They got Antetokounmpo back after he missed their home victory over Phoenix on Sunday with a bruised right quadriceps. Brook Lopez (7'0''-C-1988, college: Stanford) added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Khris Middleton (6'8''-SF-1991, college: Texas A&M) had 18 points off the bench. Milwaukee held Brooklyn to 42 second-half points, dealing the Nets their third straight loss and seventh in their past nine games. 'I think the players adjusted,' Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. 'The challenge for those guys is to make good decisions, good reads and more often than not they're going to do that. We didn't in the first half, but you know, those guys figured it out.' Mikal Bridges (6'6''-G/F-1996, college: Villanova) led Brooklyn with 31 points. Spencer Dinwiddie (6'6''-PG-1993, college: Colorado) had 26 points and eight assists, and Cameron Johnson (6'9''-F-1996, college: UNC) added 19 points and seven rebounds. 'Our approach at the beginning of the game was really good. We gave ourselves a chance at halftime,' Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said. 'We've got to be able to sustain it.' Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Bucks outscored the Nets 66-42 in the second half, using a 14-4 third-quarter run to pull even at 68. Bridges answered Milwaukee's run with his own personal 10-0 spurt, but the Bucks outscored the Nets 39-23 in the third, including 18-7 over the final 5:04 after Antetokounmpo went to the bench after picking up his fourth foul. 'I think we went 12-2 to start, and then they went back on a 10-0 run, and it felt like it was back to a 10-point game,' Budenholzer said. 'The guys, to go on that run to finish the quarter (was) impressive.' Then the Bucks, who rank No. 1 in the NBA in defensive rating and fourth in the league by allowing 111.2 points per game, turned up the defense in the fourth. Brooklyn was just 7 of 23 in the fourth, missing nine straight over a span of 4:23. 'I think we did a good job of trying to take (3-pointers) away from them as best as possible,' Holiday said. 'Because we play defense so well, that kind of propelled our offense.' Bridges said the Nets 'just weren't there' late in the game. 'We weren't in our shifts and transitions, not getting back as hard and then Giannis got it going, got to the line, got the and-one and dunking and got them going,' Bridges said. Brooklyn was aggressive against Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee offense early, forcing seven first-quarter turnovers and 12 in the first half. Antetokounmpo had the same number of field goals and turnovers in the first quarter (2), and the Nets turned that defense into offense, using a 17-2 run to build a 15-point advantage. 'I think we were competing, but we weren't competing hard enough,' Antetokounmpo said. 'Sometimes when you play teams like (Brooklyn), they force turnovers and get wide-open 3s.' Bridges had 18 points, Johnson had 15 and six rebounds and Dinwiddie scored 13 and had six assists in the first half, helping Brooklyn take a 62-52 lead at halftime.

Morant's third-quarter burst leads Grizzlies past Lakers 121-109 - by Eurobasket News
Ja Morant (6'3''-G-1999, college: Murray St.) scored 28 of his 39 points in the third quarter and added 10 assists and 10 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles 121-109 on Tuesday night in the Lakers' first game since LeBron James injured his right foot. Xavier Tillman Sr. (6'8''-F-1999, college: Michigan St.) finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, while Jaren Jackson Jr. (6'11''-F/C-1999, college: Michigan St.) and Desmond Bane (6'6''-G-1998, college: TCU) scored 16 points apiece. Anthony Davis (6'10''-C-1993, college: Kentucky) led the Lakers with 28 points and 19 rebounds, while Lonnie Walker IV (6'5''-G/F-1998, college: Miami, FL) scored 21 points. Austin Reaves (6'5''-G-1998, college: Oklahoma) had 17, while matching his season high with four 3-pointers. Morant took over in the third quarter, connecting on 10 of 12 shots. That broke open a close game and gave the Grizzlies a 93-84 advantage entering the fourth. Memphis would click off eight straight points to take the first double-digit lead in the game as Brandon Clarke (6'8''-PF-1996, college: Gonzaga) scored on a dunk off the Lakers' 22nd turnover with 9:14 left. The lead would eventually reach 106-92 with about nine minutes left. But using a 3-point shooting streak, the Lakers cut the Memphis lead to 110-106 on a three-point play by Davis. Memphis would answer by stretching the lead back to 118-106, enough to claim its second straight victory. James' injury, suffered in Sunday's win over Dallas, left the Lakers without their leading scorer at 29.7 points per game. They don't know how long he will be out. Los Angeles shot 37% and Memphis 33% in the first half. The Grizzlies held a six-point lead, the biggest of the half for either team.

No. 3 Kansas tops Texas Tech to clinch Big 12 title share - by Eurobasket News
In their final game at Allen Fieldhouse, Jalen Wilson (6'8''-F-2000) and fellow Kansas senior Kevin McCullar (6'6''-G-2001) not only kept the hardscrabble Jayhawks in front of Texas Tech most of the night but made the play that sealed the win. Along with another Big 12 title. Wilson had 21 points to lead all scorers, McCullar added 14 points with a critical basket in the final minute, and the third-ranked Jayhawks held off the Red Raiders 67-63 on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of their NCAA-leading 64th regular-season conference championship. 'It felt so good to win,' Wilson said. 'I just wanted to cherish the moment.' Dajuan Harris Jr. (6'1''-G) had 16 points for the Jayhawks (25-5, 13-4), who would capture the outright title if No. 9 Texas loses to No. 22 TCU on Wednesday night. Otherwise, the Jayhawks would need to beat the Longhorns on Saturday. Kansas was left clinging to a 61-60 lead after the Red Raiders' De'Vion Harmon (6'2''-G-2001) could only make the second of two free throws with 56.4 seconds left. But after the Jayhawks raced up the floor, and Wilson failed to get an open look, a loose ball ended up in the hands of McCullar, who merely had to lay it in for a three-point lead. 'It was a loose ball. I seen Harmon reach for it and I was like, 'I need to get this ball and get this bucket,'' said McCullar, who transferred from Texas Tech. 'Nobody was around so I just stuck it in. That play was huge.' 'If anybody was going to make that play, it was Kevin,' Wilson added. 'That's just the type of guy he is.' Texas Tech still had time left and called a timeout to set up a play. But Pop Isaacs threw a driving layup off the side of the backboard, and Harris scored in transition for the Jayhawks to put the game out of reach. 'We had to decide for the 3 or try to score and get something quick and went with that,' Red Raiders coach Mark Adams said of the game's crucial possession. 'Didn't get the call.' The Jayhawks improved to 22-1 against Texas Tech (16-14, 5-12) in the Phog with their seventh consecutive win overall, and they have not lost on senior night since the 1983-84 season. 'They made some big plays down the stretch, especially the last couple of minutes. That's what Kansas does,' Adams said. 'With their homecourt advantage, they know how to win late in games.' Harmon had 15 points to lead Texas Tech, which was just 3 of 16 from the 3-point line. Kevin Obanor (6'8''-F-1999) added 14 points, Fardaws Aimaq (6'11''-F-1999) had 13 points and 18 rebounds, and Isaacs finished with 11 points. Wearing retro red uniforms for their senior sendoff, the Jayhawks got off to a frigid start against the defensive-minded Red Raiders. McCullar eventually dropped a couple of 3s minutes apart to give Kansas some breathing room, and Wilson began driving for contested layups, helping the Jayhawks forge a 30-21 lead by the break. Texas Tech was 1 of 11 from beyond the arc and committed seven turnovers over the first 20 scattershot minutes. The Red Raiders' cold streak ended there. They scored five quick points to start the second half, nearly wiping out their deficit in their first few trips down floor, and Obanor began to get easy buckets in the paint. While the Jayhawks kept answering every time Texas Tech got within a possession, they could never put the game away. And when it appeared as if they might as Gradey Dick (6'8''-G) scored his first points on two free throws to make it 60-55 with about three minutes to go, the Red Raiders answered with back-to-back baskets at the other end. It wasn't until McCullar's bucket and Harris' breakway layup in the final minute that Kansas could finally celebrate.

MSU Moorhead wins second straight NSIC Tournament Championship - by Igor Obradovic
MSU Moorhead defeated Minnesota Duluth, 79-69, in the NSIC Tournament Final on Tuesday evening. Four Dragons scored in double figures in an all-around team effort. The win is MSUM's second NSIC Tournament victory in as many years and is the second in program history.
MSUM would come out to a hot start that included four early three-pointers in the first five minutes. Gavin Baumgartner (6'4''-G-1998) attributed two of those four and scored eight early points to put the Dragons in front 16-8. Lorenzo McGhee (6'5''-G) would score five consecutive points following a 6-2 Duluth run to give MSUM a 10-point advantage nearing the midway point in the half.
Dane Zimmer (6'7''-F) would nail his second three of the half to push that lead to 13. Coming into tonight's game, Zimmer had made two three-pointers all season. The junior would continue his great tournament, nearly collecting a double-double (10 points, nine rebounds) in the first half. Following Zimmer's second foul, the Dragons would look to Drew Hagen to play valuable minutes with Jaden Stanley-Williams (6'7''-F) out with an ankle injury. Hagen took a charge and forced a Bulldog turnover in his time on the floor, firing up MSUM's bench and fans. Hagen later netted a three which nearly tore the roof off the Sanford Pentagon.
On the offensive end, McGhee continued to score at-will, putting in five more points along with a Trever Kaiser (6'2''-G) basket. Those scores put the Dragons up 36-22 with less than four minutes left in the half. MSUM would close the half with a buzzer-beating runner from Jacob Beeninga (6'0''-PG) to head into the locker room leading 47-28. The Dragons shot 51.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes. It was MSUM's aggressive defensive effort that helped build the lead, holding the Bulldogs to 39.3 percent shooting and eight turnovers in the half.
Beeninga and Gavin Baumgartner opened the second half with back-to-back triples for the Dragons. Those makes would give MSUM a 53-30 advantage as it brought the team total 10 three early in the half. Duluth would respond to that with an 8-0 run to cut the Dragon lead to 15 points. While the Bulldogs would go on a 13-2 run, the Dragon lead remained in double figures with under 10 minutes left. A lovely pass from Gavin Baumgartner to Logan Kinsey for a jam swung the momentum back towards MSUM.
The Dragons would lead 69-54 with under four minutes remaining. Beeninga continued to showcase why he is a catalyst, burying a three and driving to the lane for lay-in on consecutive possessions. The sophomore dove on the floor to grab a steal with three and a half minutes left that enlivened Dragon fans. Beeninga would finish the game with 17 points.
MSUM would continue to hold a 10-point lead with just over a minute left to play. The Dragons would make five of six free throws in the final minute to put the game on ice. MSUM captured its second consecutive NSIC Tournament Championship with the 79-69 win. McGhee, Baumgartner, Zimmer and Beeninga were all named to the All-Tournament team with Beeninga being named Tournament MVP.

Caffe Moak Luxol to face Depiro in women's Louis Borg Cup final - by Eurobasket News
The semi-final series, played on two games, resulted in Caffe Moak Luxol and Depiro eliminating Starlites Fijo and Hibernians respectively to book a place in the final series. The final showdown will see Game One being played on March 10 and the second match on March 12.

Caffe Moak Luxol 114 Starlites Fijo 99
The first game set off on a low note regarding scoring as both sides had a low percentage whilst turnovers, at both ends, were quite at a high. Three consecutive hoops from Maria Bonett (174-C-1995) helped Starlites to a 12-6 lead early in the second quarter only for Luxol to bring the game level, 16-16, after a Gladys Avila (177-F-1994) (20 pts, six rebounds, four assists and 10 steals) bucket followed by a trey and hoop from Mandi Mercieca (13 pts, 11 rebounds). The first half, however, ended with the Naxxar side enjoying a three-point lead after Mikela Riolo (170-SG-2001) had very late points. The first nine minutes of the third quarter had Starlites always ahead with Stephanie Demartino nailing three treys. The lead changed hands in the last minute as Luxol scored a tris of hoops from Gladys Avila, Mercieca and Josephine Diaby (10 rebounds) respectively to go 38-34 ahead. Luxol's run continued at the start of the fourth rubber as they added another eight points on the run to extend their lead to 46-34. However, the series maintained its full interest as Starlites managed to halve their deficit by the final buzzer after further hoops from Riolo, a brace of buckets from Simmons and a Michela Zammit Cordina threeball. The second game had a more explosive start as the Naxxar side quickly got early hoops for a 9-2 lead which was further extended to 16-6 a few minutes later. Luxol recovered a bit with five late points in the quarter from Mexican Gladys Avila. Starlites did not let go of their momentum and again opened another double-digit lead in the second quarter, at 35-25, in the game's 19th minute. American Amelia Simmons (181-F-1987, college: WILMU) was notching several hoops on a day where she shot at 50% for 22 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. At the start of the second half, Riolo nailed her third trey in the game but Luxol started, gradually, to find a positive rhythm and a 10-point run saw them overturn a four-point deficit into a six-point lead, 45-39 as the Fenech Pace sisters, Sarah and Lisa (both shooting at 43% and each having also 4 rebounds), had a hoop each around 6 Gladys Avila points. With a quarter to go, Luxol were enjoying a 12-point aggregate lead and the pressure was now totally on Starlites. The latter did try their best, but it was Luxol who managed to move further ahead through further contributions from Gladys Avila as well as Diaby.

ARMS Depiro 130 Hibernians 114
ARMS Depiro took a good lead into the second game after managing to end the first encounter with a double-digit lead, an advantage that materialized in the fourth quarter of the game. In fact, save the first minutes of the game which saw Depiro open on a high to go 10-3 ahead, the two sides battled it out evenly on the court and it was a very tight 46-45 game very late in the third quarter. The game's first minute witnessed three treys. Depiro's Casey Samuels notched a brace whilst Hibs' Samantha Brincat (176-SF-1979) was precise from long range at the opposite end. Brincat also had four treys in the game with 46 per cent accuracy and 18 points, four assists. From Depiro's end, Julia Xerri (167-SG-1996) and Claire Ciantar (172-C-1995) had double-digit games with Xerri adding seven assists whereas Ciantar had seven boards. Hibs recovered well by the end of the first quarter for a tied 18-18 score as Ashleigh van Vliet and Kenyotta Jenkins grabbed their points as both had a double-double game. Both shot below 30% but had 25 points between them as van Vliet had six assists and brought down also 13 boards and Jenkins had 11 rebounds. The balance was evident for the next two quarters as the game set off for the last rubber. Here, Depiro managed 10 points without a reply to move 56-45 in the lead. The Paolites did find back their mark but each of their points was immediately replied at the opposite end as Depiro went in for the second game enjoying a 13-point lead. Hibs' early intentions in game two were clear as they tried to set an early pace but their early points were neutralized through treys from Samuels and Nicole Agius (155-PG-1998). Samuels again led her side and amassed 31 points with 40% shooting and also dished six assists and had 12 rebounds. Guard Agius scored three treys from seven attempts and also added nine rebounds. A Julia Borg (169-SF-2004) hoop gave Depiro a small late first quarter lead which they maintained till the interval for 37-35. Hibs best moment arrived late in the third quarter as they registered a 9-point streak to move 53-46 ahead, bringing the aggregate deficit to a mere six points. Brincat, van Vliet and Jenkins again had a double-digit personal game with van Vliet ending as the game's top rebounder with 17 boards and eight assists. Depiro's reply was very important as they practically took control of the series with a nine-point counter streak courtesy of Samuels and Ciantar. Time was now in their favour and Leanne Duncan even ascertained their win in the second game.

Offensive rebounds, two 10-point leads not enough as Nevada falls to UNLV 71-66 - by Eurobasket News
Nevada women's basketball held the lead over No. 22/25 nationally ranked UNLV heading into the final period, but the Rebels pulled away and defeated the Pack 71-66 on Tuesday night at Lawlor Events Center in the Silver State Series by America First Credit Union. Junior guard Alyssa Jimenez (6'0''-G) came up with her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, her fourth double-double in Mountain West play. Junior guard Victoria Davis (5'4''-PG) led Nevada in scoring with 19 points, including 14 in the first half, and graduate student forward Megan Ormiston (6'3''-F) added 10 points. Nevada quickly set the tone of the rivalry by scoring the game's first basket, but the Rebels answered back by snatching the early lead halfway through the first period. A 3-pointer by Davis allowed Nevada to regain a one-point lead before UNLV scored six unanswered points to retake the advantage. The Pack ended the first quarter with momentum, going on a quick 5-0 scoring run to close the period. A pair of quick baskets gave UNLV a fast start, but seven unanswered points and another jumper from beyond the arc by Davis stretched Nevada's lead to two possessions early in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by UNLV made it a three-point game before Davis responded with another 3-pointer of her own to put Nevada back out in front by six. After UNLV scored a basket while drawing the foul with 22 seconds left in the half, Nevada went into the locker room ahead of Rebels 39-35. The Pack came out of the halftime break storming, with Ormiston and junior Lexie Givens (6'0''-F) scoring baskets to go with a Roden jump shot that made it a double-digit Nevada lead. Following a pair of UNLV baskets, a 3-pointer by Jimenez and a bucket by Davis allowed Nevada to go back up by 10 before the Rebels made it a 56-49 game going into the fourth quarter. UNLV opened the final period on a 9-0 scoring run to take a two-point lead while drawing a fifth foul on Givens, who was playing crucial defense on UNLV's leading scorer and rebounder Desi-Rae Young (6'1''-C). The Rebels took advantage, with Young scoring a pair of baskets that put UNLV ahead by five. Davis' fifth 3-pointer of the game cut the deficit down to three points with 20 seconds to go, but UNLV sank its last two free throws to secure the regular season finale. Nevada will be the No. 8 seed in the Mountain West Championships and face No. 9 seed Fresno State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Las Vegas.
